LG smartphone w/ new wireless charging standard reportedly ready to launch, works at up to 7 cm distance

Wireless charging, while not as popular as it once was, is still one of the coolest features you can get on any smartphone. Qi wireless charging is the current dominant standard, but it appears — according to Korean reports — that LG is hoping to ditch that option for another in one of their upcoming devices.

Business Korea reports that LG has just completed development on a new smartphone that will adopt another wireless charging standard that offers a few key advantages over Qi. Magnetic resonance wireless charging, which we haven’t seen on many devices yet, offers a wider range between charger and receiver — up to 7 cm. While that isn’t enough to use the device during charging, it is enough to allow the use of other form factors for charging — like the weird bowl we once saw from Intel at CES.

It’s unclear which smartphone this will launch with, but we could see it within the next several months. This could be something coming in a sequel to the LG V10. Other OEMs such as Huawei and OPPO have also been experimenting with this technology, so we’ll probably see more on wireless charging in general through the rest of this year.
