Despite offering extensive support windows for the device lineup, if you own the Fairphone 5, you can now officially install LineageOS 21 on the sustainable phone.
Launched in August 2023, the Fairphone 5 is an eco-friendly phone built with repairability and ethical sourcing in mind. It boasts a large 6.46-inch OLED display with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, it has a powerful processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of onboard storage.
The LineageOS project has officially added the Fairphone 5 to the nightly build roster, making it the third device from the Dutch smartphone company to be compatible with the third-party ROM. It actually shipped with Android 13, and Android 14 is not yet available officially. However, it is promised to receive five years of major updates and eight years of security patches.
Meanwhile, LineageOS has been one of the go-to third-party ROMs for anyone looking for a long-term support solution for their smartphones. LineageOS 21 builds based on Android 14 can be flashed on the Fairphone 5, giving you access to all of the latest features as part of Google’s most recent stable OS release. Despite this not being an “official” way to get Android 14 on your Fairphone 5 device, LineageOS 21 is a well-supported and maintained custom ROM that includes lots of quality-of-life additions, tuning, plus more. The most recent report puts the userbase of LineageOS at over 1.5 million people – an impressive figure.
