Walmart’s new Chromecast with Google TV replacement starts showing up in stores, $30

After leaking just last week, the new Chromecast with Google TV replacement from Walmart is already showing up in stores, kicking off the cycle of Walmart’s unorthodox launches.

Rewinding a few days, word hit recently that Walmart would be working on a new streaming stick that, unlike past models, would support 4K streaming. The new device has a built-in HDMI plug and also boosts itself to 2GB of RAM, higher than the previous 1080p iterations.

That device is now showing up in stores.

Reddit user u/JustLook361 managed to find the device at a local Walmart store, with the “Onn 4K Streaming Device” packing the streaming stick form factor that was expected. The box advertises “Google TV with Gemini” prominently, while talking points on the back of the package confirm 4K output, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and upgraded processing power with a quad-core chipset and Mali G57 GPU.

It still sounds like a perfect Chromecast replacement.

Also found in the box is an HDMI extender (used for tight TV connections), a voice remote with included AAA batteries, and a wall adapter for power.

The actual hardware wasn’t shown by the poster (yet), and it sounds like this was definitely put out by mistake, as there was just “one mixed in with a bunch of other sticks.”

Apparently, it was sold for $30.

A release timeline for this device is unclear, but a $30 price point makes sense alongside the existing $20~ FHD streaming stick$25~ 4K streaming puck, and $30~ 4K Plus streaming puck, the latter seemingly getting a price hike to $40~. That $30 price point seems like a perfect spot for this new device to slot in. A new Pro entry from Walmart is also expected to launch soon.

With the device now showing up in stores, it could release basically at any point between this week and a month from now – Walmart’s launches are historically pretty scattered. In 2023, the 4K dongle showed up in stores in mid-April, started shipping online to some two weeks later, but wasn’t officially released until mid-May. The “Pro” model launched in 2024 showed up in stores in May, but didn’t fully release until later that month.
