Today being Earth Day, Google has placed the spotlight on Sabita Malla, a senior research officer at the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) who spends her days in Nepal’s Chitwan National Park fighting to protect Bengal tigers and rhinos from poachers. Aided by Glass, Malla tracks and monitors these endangered creatures using Google’s famed wearable to take pictures, notes and measurements — something she originally did with a pencil and paper.
The addition of Glass has eliminated several tedious steps from the WWF team’s workflow. Malla goes as far as saying that the custom-built glassware apps cut her workload in half. Google is framing the WWF’s efforts as an example of how nonprofit organizations can participate in its Giving Through Glass Explorer program to make their work easier. Today, the company is opening its program to other do-gooders trying to push their nonprofit’s cause further along.
From now through May 20th, people can share with Google how they would use Glass to make a difference. The company will select five nonprofit organizations (US only) to receive a Glass device, $25,000 and a trip to a Google office for training.
