Following Marshmallow’s biggest jump last month, Android 6.0 is now on 15.2% of all Android devices according to the August distribution numbers. With Nougat near release, Marshmallow is likely going to be eclipsed as the newest version of Android in next month’s data.
The nearly two percentage point increase over last month was likely aided by a number of smaller OEMs, like Honor, and older Samsung phones, including Galaxy S6 variants and Tab tablets, receiving updates. Additionally, Jide released Remix OS based on Android 6.0 last month. With Samsung having just released the Galaxy Note 7 with Marshmallow yesterday, the nine month operating system will likely continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
Lollipop was actually up 0.4 percentage points from last month and continues to be the most widely used version of Android. All other versions were down, with KitKat at 29.2% and Jelly Bean at 16.7%. Ice Cream Sandwich is at 1.6%, Gingerbread at 1.7%, and Froyo remains at 0.1%. These numbers are compiled from Android devices that accessed the Play Store in a seven-day period ending on August 1.
Many rumors point to Nougat coming out this month for newer Nexus devices. If that is the case, it’s possible that Android 7.0 will make an appearance in the distribution numbers by this time next month.
