Google’s WebM video format comes to Adobe Premiere Pro via new plugin

Fnord Software has today announced that they’re releasing a free plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro CC that adds support for Google’s WebM video format. But the plugin doesn’t just add WebM support to Premiere Pro CC, but also other parts of Adobe Creative Cloud including Adobe Media Encoder and more.

WebM is an open web media project headed up by Google, aimed at developing “a high-quality, open video format for the web that’s freely available to everyone.” The format has been around for quite some time, but today’s release from Fnord Software means that support is now making its way to Adobe’s products, allowing editors to encode WebM content within their Premiere timelines.

Google is of course glad to see developers build plugins around their tech:

“At Google, we’re dedicated to helping content creators easily bring and share high-quality video onto the Web without sacrificing speed or the user experience,” said Matt Frost, head of strategy and partnerships for the Chrome Web Media Team. “It’s great to see developers, like Fnord Software, build compelling tools that provides users with more options and capabilities for video editing and publishing.”

WebM support has been part of all of the top web browsers—including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and more—for quite some time, and this newly-released plugin includes Google’s new free and open VP9 video codec. Whether this is something you need or not, it’s definitely nice to see that Adobe and Google are both supportive of small companies like Fnord that want to expand on and bring new functionality to their software.

You can find the plugin at Fnord’s website, available free for Mac and PC.
