Kindle Fire now over half of Android tablet market, as Amazon reports blowout earnings

Site default logo image

It is apparent over the last few months that Amazon’s $199 Kindle Fire has been making rapid gains in Android tablet market. However, we did not think it was an all out domination. According to research firm ComScore, the Kindle Fire now makes up 54.4 percent of the total Android Market (as of the end of the month) after just six months on the market. Following behind is the Samsung Galaxy Tab series at 15.4-percent, Motorola Xoom at 7 percent, and Asus Transformer come at 6.3-percent.

The Kindle Fire has been selling very well on Amazon’s online store and at various retail stores. Priced at $199 and built on a custom version of Android 2.3, the Kindle Fire offers a tablet on the cheap for those looking to consume content. Of course, today’s news sounds a little better for Amazon than Google, as there is really no hint to the average consumer eye that the Kindle Fire is running Android. We are hoping Amazon will announce how many have been sold some day, but it hasn’t yet.

In further Amazon news this afternoon, the company just reported its Q1 2012 earnings. The Seattle-based company is reporting $13.18 billion in revenue for the first quarter, compared to $9.86 billion YOY, which blows out analysts’ expectations for the online marketplace. However, Amazon’s net income was down 35 percent to $130 million. You can read the full announcement after the break.

Samsung announces 1.4GHz Exynos 4 quad-core processor for the Galaxy S3

Site default logo image

Samsung provided official word this evening that its 1.4GHz Exynos 4 quad-core processor would be the powerhouse driving the upcoming Galaxy S3. The company announced in its press release: “Already in production, the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May. Samsung’s Exynos 4 Quad is also sampling to other major handset makers.” Do you need more confirmation that this is going to be one rockin’ handset?

As for the technical terms of the processor, the Exynos 4 rocks a 32nm HKMG low-power process and power-saving design, which provides 20 percent lower power consumption over the last dual-core version.

The Galaxy S3 is not set to be officially unveiled until May 3 at a London press event. You bet we will cover the event in full, because Samsung is sure to announce one of the hottest smartphones of the summer. We posted the full press release and video teaser for the processor after the break for you to check out.

Facebook incorporates social app discovery channels into its Android app

Site default logo image

Earlier this week, the folks over at Facebook rolled out version 1.9 of its Android app. Unbeknownst to us, the app actually included a new feature that is outlined by Facebook on its blog today. With this latest update, Facebook is bringing social app discovery channels to native Android apps. The update also makes Android now on par with iOS, which has had this feature for a few months. Over on the iOS side, users have enjoyed apps like Pinterest and Words with Friends.

Facebook announced: “Users can now discover native apps directly from Facebook for Android using the same social channels, such as Requests, Bookmarks, and News Feed, that are available on other platforms.”

I know the way Facebook explained it is a little confusing, but essentially you will now be able to launch an Android app that has Facebook integration from right inside of the social network’s app. Let’s say you have Word with Friends linked to your Facebook account, you will now be able to launch the Android app directly from the Facebook app. Facebook’s Alex Wu showed off the feature on video.

Some users complaining of Google Drive for Mac crashing Finder

Site default logo image

Along with the release of the long-awaited Google Drive, Google also released a slick Mac app accompanying the service. However, it looks like the Google Drive for Mac app is causing some issues for some. Over on the Google Products Forums, the amount of users complaining that Drive is causing Finder on OS X to crash is growing. One of our readers, Mike, reported Finder crashing a whopping eight times since he installed Drive earlier this afternoon and has included the crash report to prove it.

Also, in the thread, user robbysibrahim said the issue stopped for him when he paused syncing. This obviously is not a permanent solution, but it should work until Google rolls out an official fix. A Google support member joined the thread in hopes of helping the users, but his suggestions have not provided a fix.

Right now, it is a little unclear why this is happening. However, we have reached out to Google in the hopes of hearing back. This is obviously very frustrating for users who want to try Google Drive on launch day. Are you seeing similar issues? Cheers, Mike!

Google Drive iOS app is ’98 percent done’—launching soon

Site default logo image

With the launch of the highly anticipated Google Drive earlier today, many iOS users were left wondering where their iOS-optimized app is. Do not fear, because AllThingsD confirmed with Google that the Google Drive iOS app is launching soon. In an interview with Google SVP of Chrome and Apps Sundar Pichai, the executive told AllThingsD that the iOS is “98 percent done, and it will be here soon.” Soon is hopefully this week.

Luckily for Android users, Google launched an app alongside Google Drive. After playing with the app this afternoon, I can tell you it is very sleek. It is an awesome solution for managing files—especially documents. Google also launched a Mac app, which is useful.

Google using cool zipper logo tomorrow

Site default logo image

Ah, there is nothing like an old, trustworthy zipper. To commemorate Gideon Sundback‘s birthday, the founder of the zipper, Google is using a zipper logo on its website tomorrow. As you can see in the video above, the logo is pretty cool and moves with your mouse. Am I the only one that loves when Google does these silly little logos?

Sprint posts HTC EVO 4G LTE pre-order page, starts May 7

Site default logo image

The Now Network wants you to “fall in love all over again,” as it has put up the pre-order page for the HTC EVO 4G LTE this afternoon. While customers cannot pre-order yet, we now know that those looking to get their hands on Sprint’s next 4G device do not have much longer, because pre-orders start May 7. Announced earlier this month at a media event in New York, the EVO 4G LTE packs a 4.7-inch HD 720p Super LCD display, 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 8-megapixel primary camera, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, Android 4.0, and Google Wallet. Perhaps the EVO line is not your type: In that case, Sprint also offers the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper to satisfy your LTE needs. Oh yeah, Sprint’s LTE network has not launched yet. Nevertheless, it should roll out by mid-summer. You can sign-up at the link below to get more information.

HTC One X goes on sale early at some AT&T locations

HTC’s flagship smartphone, the HTC One X, is not set to ship to AT&T customers until May 6. However, that has not stopped a few AT&T locations from selling the device a little early or from showing it off around their stores. One of the readers over at Engadget was actually able to get a store clerk to sell him the device a bit early, as you can see above. While you probably will not be as lucky, it is always worth a shot. Moreover, if it does not work out, make sure you pre-order this smoking hot device at AT&T’s website for $199 on a two-year contract.

Google Apps now features Google+ integration inside of Gmail

If you use Google Apps, I am sure you know the service is usually behind when it comes to receiving new features that have already rolled out to regular users. Today is no different, because the Google Apps team announced on the Google Apps Blog this evening a few new, but small, features inside of Gmail.

First off, users can now share YouTube videos and inline images inside of Gmail with just one click, which is definitely a useful feature. This saves time when composing a quick email and makes it easier to view the media.

A feature that we have enjoyed on the consumer version of Gmail is also coming, which is the ability to add Google Plus users to circles directly from Gmail messages. You are usually emailing co-workers and friends throughout the day anyway, so it makes sense to be able to add them quickly to your Circles for organization on Google+.

Lastly, Apps will now feature a new People Widget in the upper-right hand corner that will show the last three images a contact has sent. This is an awesome feature, because it gives you a full breakdown on exactly whom you are talking to, including the ability to catch up with them on Google+.

Google said in its blog post that the new features are set to roll out to Apps users quickly over the next few days.

Google begins testing ‘Trusted Stores’ badge on Adwords

Site default logo image

Google began testing a new “Trusted Stores” badge on its Adwords platform to compliment its Trusted Stores program. Search Engine Land discovered the feature this afternoon. For those unfamiliar, Adwords is Google’s ad platform that displays ads on Google’s Search product while driving a ton of revenue to the Mountain View, Calif.-based company. Google launched Trusted Stores last year as a way for customers to feel a little more comfortable when buying products online. The new badge that appears in Adwords will help users to understand which companies Google has approved as a reliable source.

A Google spokesperson explained the move:

HTC Droid Incredible 4G pops up on Verizon’s ‘Droid Does’ site [Pulled]

Site default logo image

While rumors of the device have popped up over the last few months, Verizon confirmed the news of the HTC Droid Incredible 4G on its Droid Does website earlier this morning. It was obviously a mistake, because Big Red pulled the listing from its website shortly after. Nevertheless, Android Central got a glimpse of the specs and price. While there is no launch date, we now know the Droid Incredible 4G packs a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch display, LTE bands, and Android 4.0 with HTC’s custom Sense 4 on top. Presumably, the device also features an 8-megapixel shooter. At $299, this handset will certainly be a hot-seller alongside the Droid RAZR Maxx and Droid 4. We reached out to Verizon to try to learn more.

Samsung releases registration page for information on the ‘next Galaxy’

Site default logo image

Samsung’s next Galaxy device is set to launch at a May 3 press event in London, but that has not stopped the company from releasing a ton of teasers for the new device. On top of two video teasers earlier this morning, Samsung also released a registration page to get more information on “a whole new world.” Samsung’s teasers are certainly getting us super excited, and you bet we will be on the look out for even more leaks. So far, rumors are pointing to a nice little spec bump, but overall features should not be that far off from the Galaxy S II. CNET said last week that the device might feature eye tracking technology and the absence of a home button. You can hit up the source link after the break to register, or just stick with 9to5Google for all the latest.

Samsung posts teaser website for the ‘Next Galaxy’ — opens tomorrow

Site default logo image

Samsung plans to take the wraps off its next Galaxy device on May 3 at a media event in London. However, that has not stopped the Korea-based company from putting up a little teaser for its new handset. Scrambling the words “The Next Galaxy” into tgeltaayehxnx.com, Samsung posted a countdown timer for tomorrow morning to show us something about the device. While we are most likely not going to get a full look at the device until the media event, Sammy will probably tease something. We will be all eyes for whatever hits the web tomorrow morning. But hey, in the mean time, hit up the source link below to check the website out.

Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha earned $47M in 2011

Site default logo image

According to a regulatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Motorola Mobility’s Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Jha earned a whopping $47 million salary in 2011—quadrupling his pay during 2010. So, what is with the $34 million increase? Motorola said on Friday that Jha’s work to split Motorola into two companies, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility, warranted such a raise.

Motorola Mobility agreed to sell to Google in a $12.5 billion deal last August, which has been approved by both United States and European regulators. China has not made a decision and just pushed for more time to review the deal.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper launch on Sprint today

Site default logo image

The Now Network is having a huge day as it launches three new phones on its network—and two are even 4G LTE capable on Sprint’s not-yet existent 4G LTE network. Nevertheless, these handsets are hot. Today, you can pick up the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper, and Optimus Elite from Sprint (via Android Central).

Let’s start with the Galaxy Nexus, the obvious winner. Sprint’s version of the Galaxy Nexus is rocking a speedy 1.2GHz processor and Google Wallet, which Verizon purposely blocked. Sprint makes the Galaxy Nexus available for $199.

The LG Viper is also good looking. It packs a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch WVGA display, and Android 2.3. Sprint makes this device available for $99 on a two-year contract. If you can spare an extra $100, I think the Galaxy Nexus should be your No. 1 choice, but this device should do well too. Hit up the source link after the break to get more information.

Spotify introduces completely overhauled Android app launching soon, featuring Ice Cream Sandwich support and new redesign

Site default logo image

After many requests from paying subscribers, the folks over at Spotify introduced a completely overhauled Android app this morning. It features an all new user interface, speed boost, and support for Android 4.0. The app formerly lacked features that the iOS app has, but now it is updated to be on par with the app on the App Store. Spotify for Android allows users to listen to unlimited music and build playlists to their liking for only $10 a month. We are huge fans, especially since Android does not have an iTunes-like solution. Unlimited music anytime, on any device — what’s not to love.

The app adds full support for Ice Cream Sandwich, allowing the latest devices in the Android ecosystem to enjoy the platform. Without ICS support, users were not able to enjoy Spotify on the latest and greatest version of Android. Now that the app is working on the latest generation of Android devices, it is a huge bonus and frankly something that should have been already included.

As you can tell in the screenshots below, the big story here is that Spotify for Android has been given a huge overhaul compared to the old version of the app. Users can use the all-new slide-out navigation, view their friends’ Facebook profiles and playlists right on the app, and view album art in high-resolution. The app also features an overall speed enhancement that is very noticeable when you fire up the app.

Spotify plans to add folders and Last.fm scrobbling to the app before it goes live on the Play Store, but it was not included in the pre-release software that we tested.

Overall, Spotify has made some great changes that allow Android users to enjoy its service. Spotify has done a great job with this app, and it is now on-par, if not surpassing, the iPhone app. Spotify plans to launch the app very soon, and we will keep you updated when the app hits the Play Store. Now we just need to hear some more information on that rumored iPad app.

Samsung Galaxy S III to be a minor upgrade, featuring eye tracking technology

Site default logo image

Samsung revealed its plans on Monday to announce the next handset in the Galaxy lineup on May 3. According to many rumors that have surfaced, the handset that Samsung will reveal is the Galaxy S III, which is the successor to the popular Galaxy S II that saw record sales worldwide. Citing “a source in the UK telecoms industry,” CNET reported that the phone would be a minor upgrade compared to the Galaxy S II; however, it will feature new eye tracking technology. The eye tracking technology will use the device’s front-facing camera to detect if your eyes are looking at the screen or when you are writing text.

As for specs on the device, CNET’s source said the update would be small with just a few speed enhancements. The specs are said to be similar to the HTC One X landing on AT&T in a week. A 1.5GHz processor, 4-inch screen, and 1 GB of RAM is likely for the device, but other rumors claim even higher specs.

As for the name of the device…
