The most popular 3rd-party WhatsApp client is now dead

fb-post

WhatsApp yesterday started handing out 24 hour bans to users of third-party clients built for the service, but it wasn’t certain at the time what would happen to these apps or whether or not WhatsApp was going to allow them to continue operations as normal. Users being banned from WhatsApp for 24 hours was an obvious setback, but now it’s more clear what the Facebook-owned company has in mind. WhatsApp+, the most popular third-party WhatsApp client, has received a cease and desist letter.

Community-made builds of Android KitKat appear for Galaxy Nexus, but expect bugs

Galaxy Nexus full

Owners of Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus were disappointed to learn that their phones would not receive official support for Android 4.4, the latest version of Google’s operating system, nicknamed KitKat. Of course, as is usually the case with situations like this, the Android community hasn’t taken too kindly to this oversight.

To correct this problem, community developers have released two separate builds of KitKat for the Galaxy Nexus. Since neither release is official, you can expect bugs and broken features. For example, PocketNow notes that in some cases Wi-Fi doesn’t always work with these builds. These issues will likely be fixed by the community in upcoming patches, but for now you may want to be cautious when installing unsupported ROMs on your phone, especially if you rely on it for day-to-day usage.

In a few short hours, CyanogenMod gets enough donations for new servers from its community

As the CyanogenMod team works to continue releasing new “nightly builds” of its custom Android firmware, it just released a blog post this morning asking for donations from the community. The team said it needed donations to purchase new servers to keep releasing new builds.

CyanogenMod is not a for-profit business. We are just a bunch of geeks, trying to make our phones more awesome. The donations we get currently cover our operating costs and occasionally go towards developer devices. This time, I need to ask for help from the community for something a bit larger. We need to purchase these servers in order to bring the build infrastructure back to full capacity.

The CyanogenMod community quickly jumped into action, and the CyanogenMod team earned the money it needed (and perhaps a bit more) in only a few short hours to purchase the necessary servers. The team will buy “Xeon-class boxes with lots of RAM” next week. Check out the full statement below:
