Google plans significant overhaul of many of its native and web apps in ‘Google 2.0’/wearable push

Google-2-0

Yesterday we got a look at a beta version of the upcoming Gmail app for Android which includes new Travel, Purchases, and Finance categories in addition to the Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums categories currently available. Also present is a pinning feature for making emails of your choosing remain at the top of your inbox as well as a “snoozing” feature that allows you to delay an email for a set amount of time much like hitting snooze on your alarm clock. Within a slightly tweaked UI you’ll also notice a new toggle at the top of your inbox that allows you to switch between showing pinned emails and having them return to chronological order.

Our sources had previously told us about this update but without confirmation. We sat on the story. Now that we have some confirmation that this is coming, we can discuss the whole of what we’ve heard.

Google investigating GPS problems with new Nexus 7

nexus-7-

If you’ve been having problems with GPS on your new Nexus 7, you’ll be happy to know that Google has confirmed that it is investigating the problem and likely working on a fix. Phonearena points us to complaints from users on the Google product forums and elsewhere, one of which includes a comment from Google Community Manager for Android, Paul Wilcox, noting that the team is looking into the problem.

Several users on XDA, Nexus 7 Google+ Communities, Android Central, etc… including myself, are having GPS problems with the N7 2013. It will get a satellite lock and work fine for anywhere between 10-30 minutes (longer for others) then it will go back into a “Searching” mode with the GPS icon blinking. Sometimes a reboot helps, others not.

I’m curious if any others on here have experienced this problem on the Nexus 7 2.0 or had any thoughts/suggestions above and beyond what has been discussed at XDA and AP.

After doing my own troubleshooting, factory defaulting my device, then returning/exchanging my device with the reseller… I reached out to Google Play Support for help and they stated that they are aware of the issue, that it was affecting N7 owners, and that engineering should be issuing a patch fix at some point… they were very vague on any details when asked for clarification.

Google shuts down Android developer forums

The Register is reporting that Google has shut down the Android developer forums, a place where Android developers could once get support on the apps they were building — in a public manner. The one downfall to the forums was the fact there was no official help from Google, but this new way will certainly remedy that. Developers who need help will now be required to email Google directly for support.

The Register points out this move could have been made by Google in order to save face. One example they give is when developers were complaining on the forums for not receiving payments owed to them. Google eventually resolved the issue, but the complaints would remain there forever. At any rate, Google’s new way will probably suffice.
