Virtual reality content is available in a lot of places, and YouTube is one of the easiest ways to access it. That’s especially true when you consider how many platforms YouTube VR is on. Today, that app expands to a new platform, and also adds a fun new feature.
Oculus has today announced that it’s adding Chromecast support to its app for Gear VR. With the latest version of the app, you can simultaneously stream everything you’re experiencing in your headset to a TV…
Samsung helped usher in the premium mobile VR experience a couple of years ago with the debut of the Gear VR headset. In the time since, that headset has evolved slightly to offer better viewing angles, improved comfort, and of course, to accommodate new devices from the company. As we approach the release of the Galaxy S8, it seems like Samsung is getting ready to bring a new headset to the table, this time with a dedicated controller.
VR on mobile is one of the least expensive ways to get into the space since you can use the smartphone you already own. However, many mobile VR solutions aren’t all that impressive. There are two clear leaders — Google’s Daydream, and the Samsung Gear VR. If you use a recent Samsung device, your choice should be pretty obvious, and there’s no better time to buy than right now.
Even though Google’s new Daydream VR platform has impressed us, there’s still no doubt that Samsung’s Gear VR headset is one of the best on the market today, even if it only works with Samsung’s devices. However, it still faces many of the same issues that all other mobile VR platforms face, most notably the lack of position & facial tracking. However, now it seems that Samsung is working on adding that functionality to an updated version of its headset.
Samsung still has a lot of work in front of it with the Galaxy Note 7 recall, but if it lives up to its promises, the company may just salvage its reputation. However, things aren’t going to go perfectly in every case…
Along with the new Galaxy Note 7 today, Samsung announced a revamped version of the Gear VR. Significant changes include a jet black design, USB-C (with backwards micro-USB compatibility), and a wider field of view. The headset will cost $99 and ship on August 19th.
I’ve long be intrigued about the potential of virtual reality, and as such, I’ve been dying to try the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive. Sadly, I’ve yet to have the opportunity to try either.
I humbly settled on Google Cardboard, which is a nice novelty, but a less than ideal experience. For all that Google Cardboard lacked, it made it clear that VR is more than just a passing fad, and that it features some serious potential.
Google Cardboard, for all of its merits, doesn’t do the idea of VR justice. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend ~$1500 to enjoy a proper VR experience. Samsung’s Gear VR, an idea brought to reality via a partnership with VR pioneer Oculus, is a legitimate VR experience that makes me downright excited about the future of this technology.
Gear VR is far from perfect, but it’s a huge upgrade over Google Cardboard, and cheap enough to where the masses can both experience and validate it. Expand Expanding Close
