Moto G camera, video samples surface and show off the 5 megapixel goods of the $179 smartphone

For all the things the Moto G may be, there’s little question that the Moto G isn’t the phone for the individual who cares most about smartphone photography. With a $179 price tag, we understand some compromises will have to be made and even if a 5 megapixel camera, f/2.4 lens and flash combination are present, we know some tradeoffs are at hand in overall quality.

The good news is the folks at Recombu have their hands on the Moto G and have posted some early results with the camera. We’re already familiar with the camera interface from the Moto X so I won’t go into to much detail, but all things considered the images don’t look all that awful. I suppose I was expecting a “too good to be true” scenario and find horrible results with the camera. Over or underexposure, poor white balance or something that would really turn me off but as it turns out I’m pleasantly and thankfully surprised with the results.

Sure, the image and video aren’t perfect and I know my expectations are skewed since I’m used to the HTC One and iPhone 5s, my votes for the two best smartphone shooters on the planet.

According to Recombu, their camera results include findings like the “noise is tapered, detail is respectable and there are more shooting modes than the Windows Phone competition offers. Images pack pleasing levels of saturation along with satisfyingly high contrast, though scenes with extreme tonal range tend to crumble.”

If you understand the device you are buying and recognize that the price tag while excellent, includes some tradeoffs to achieve than you should be more than satisfied with the Moto G camera.
