Amazon’s first smartphone will reportedly be exclusive to AT&T

We’re one day away from Amazon’s big reveal and it’s now being rumored that the company’s new smartphone will be exclusive to AT&T, according The Wall Street Journal. If true, this would nurture an existing relationship between the two companies, with Ma Bell currently offering wireless services for Amazon’s Kindle tablets. As for non-AT&T customers interested in the online retailer’s first smartphone, it’s unclear if Amazon will offer an unlocked version of its new handset, or the device will truly be exclusive to America’s second largest wireless carrier.

While it’s now considered uncommon for a flagship smartphone to be exclusive to a wireless carrier in the US, AT&T has a track record of locking down devices. The carrier held Apple’s iPhone for several years and Nokia’s Lumia line launched exclusively on AT&T, and let’s not forget about the ill-fated HTC First.

As for Amazon’s smartphone, it’s rumored to feature a 4.7-inch 720p display, a Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera and customized version of the company’s Fire OS. Probably not the most enticing specs, the device’s big draw is its rumored 3D interface that will reportedly produce hologram-like images. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out what those people were looking at in Amazon’s teaser video.
