A report from Korea last week claimed that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chip, which is almost surely going to power the next generation of Android smartphones, was facing some production issues that might cause some delay in the production of devices like the LG G4, Xperia Z4, and others. Although Qualcomm won’t comment on rumors that the chip is facing issues with overheating and GPU errors and the like, they do say that the chip is apparently still “on track” and that devices sporting the chip are still going to be available in the first half of 2015…
“We won’t comment on any of the rumor or speculation you referenced but I can tell you that everything with Snapdragon 810 remains on track and we expect commercial devices to be available in 1H 2015,” a spokesperson told TechRadar. With “1H 2015” meaning the first half of 2015, this ambiguous statement doesn’t do much to reassure us that the Snapdragon 810 will make it in time for devices that may have been planned for the earlier parts of 2015, and the “plan” all along could have been for the timeline to be set back to some degree.
The next Snapdragon is going to be a 64-bit octa-core processor, and will finally allow devices to take advantage of the 64-bit support Google added to Android in version 5.0 Lollipop. The chip will have four Cortex A57 four Cortex A53 processors, an Adreno 430 GPU, full support for intensive phone features like 4K video streaming, and support for Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 2.0 technology (which can be found being used in the Motorola Turbo Charger, for instance).
