Accelerated Mobile Pages load much faster than regular mobile pages and earlier this year launched in mobile search results. Now, Google News on Android, iOS, and the mobile web will soon include AMP articles for a faster reading experience.
The mobile site and the Google News & Weather apps on Android and iOS will be updated with a carousel of top stories that are all AMP-enabled. Additionally, articles in the rest of the app that are AMP-enabled will feature a small lightning bolt icon in the bottom left corner.
Tapping on an article will bring up the same mobile viewer interface that lets users swipe to see more articles. The open source initiative to make the mobile web as fast as possible was spearheaded by Google and other industry partners. AMP articles load an average of four times faster and use 10 times less data than equivalent sites. According to Google, “thousands of publishers have embraced this new format and are regularly publishing AMP-versions of their content.”
The Android and iOS app have yet to be updated and AMP articles are not yet showing up on the mobile web. The English US Edition of Google News will be the first to see AMP articles, with more languages and editions rolling out soon.
