Google Messages rolls out ‘Your profile’ settings to Customize name, picture [U]

Earlier this year, Google Messages introduced Profile discovery — which has since been renamed to “Profile sharing” — and is now rolling out a prominent way to “Customize how you are seen.”

Update 11/26: The full “Customize how you are seen” page, which cannot be skipped, is widely rolling out to the stable channel. After picking from one of the three options — People you message, Only your contacts, or No one — and tap “Continue,” you can return to this by tapping the profile picture in the top-right corner > Your profile.

Original 10/18: In opening Google Messages today, we were greeted by a fullscreen “Customize how you are seen” prompt. Tapping to change your name and profile image opens Google Account settings, while there’s a “Show name and picture to” dropdown menu with three options:

  • People you message: Your profile is visible to people after you send them a message.
  • Only your contacts: Your profile is visible to people after you send them a message, but only if they’re in your contacts.
  • No one: Your profile isn’t made visible to anyone after you send a message.

Previously, Profile discovery — which shares your name and photo to people that have your phone number when messaging — could only be turned on or off. With this launch, Google appears to have renamed the setting to “Profile sharing.”

To this day, I still don't have the option to access profile discovery. I don't have the option in Google messages, or my Google account in my profile. I know several people that do have it and I've seen how to access it, but my personal Google account still has not activated that as an option. Contacted Google and they're no help. They just tell me where to go to find it, but it's still not appearing for me.

After tapping “Continue” to set, you can access this “Your profile” page again from the avatar menu.

The support page on “Google Account & profile sharing in Google Messages” has been updated since earlier this year:

How it works

  • When you sign in to Google Messages with your Google Account, you can choose how to share your profile information.
  • Your name and picture is only shared with Google Messages users (not iPhone users) after you send them a message.
  • This doesn’t make your profile publicly visible.
  • Your phone number won’t be visible in other Google apps. It’s only used to verify and help other Google Messages users connect with you.
  • When a profile is shared for one of your existing contacts, you’ll receive a new picture for them in Google Messages, but retain the saved name if it’s different.

We’re seeing Your profile on several phones running the latest Google Messages beta (version 20241014_05_RC00) today, but it’s not yet widely rolled out.
