The Waze maps app— the one Google acquired a few years back to improve its own mapping services—today announced a new features that will warn drivers when they are driving over the speed limit.
Now when you’re using the Waze app to navigate, you’ll automatically see a visual warning (pictured above) if you go over the speed limit, and you can also manually set audio warnings for reaching the limit or hitting 5, 10 or 15% over.
Whether you’re driving on new and unfamiliar roads or a place where speed limits change with the season, you’ll no longer be in the dark. Waze will keep you aware of your speed, reminding you to slow down and drive safely… To see speed limits you don’t need to change a thing. If you’re driving over the limit, a visual alert will appear on the Waze speedometer. It will stay there until your speed drops below the limit.
And like many of the other features in Waze, the data for speed limits is being sourced by the community with the company noting that its contributors have “input and verified speed limits on our Map Editor” to make the feature possible.
The new speed limit warnings feature is rolling out first to Waze users in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Czech Republic, El Salvador, France, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, Trinidad, Tobago and Uruguay alongside today’s announcement. But the company says it will arrive later for users elsewhere.
You can download the free Waze app for Android from Google Play.
