TiVo and non-TiVo customers can now experience DVR on their Android-powered devices with the first—and free—TiVo application. Vice President of TiVo User Experience Margret Schmidt tweeted the release of the new app early Jan. 6.
“You can search, browse, discover and share without ever interrupting the show you’re watching,” announced the app’s description on the Android Market. “Quickly surface new content, view guides, schedule and manage recordings, get recommendations, or dig deeper into a particular actor’s entire resume—all using intuitive, gesture-based interaction.”
The app features many options, including: access to the channel guide and ability to record shows without exiting a running program; advanced screening of shows 14 days early; management and scheduling preferences for recordings; and, access to TV, Netflix, Amazon, and Blockbuster streaming content in an integrated view…
Users can also browse database offerings to cast and crew information, and they can share such information through social networks while operating a TiVo remote control replica interface with gesture-based controls.
However, TiVo added that some of the app’s features—without naming which ones—are only available to TiVo Premiere DVR customers.
The TiVo app currently has a four-star rating with 23 reviews on the Android Marketplace as of 10:30 a.m. EST.
The new app may be a glimmer of hope for the Alviso, Calif.-based Company, as the number of direct subscribers to TiVo fell to 1.1 million from 1.3 million compared to a year earlier, according to 2011’s third-quarter results. Meanwhile, the number of customers using cable company products licensed from TiVo declined to 910,000 from 951,000.
Moreover, for the quarter that ended Oct. 31, TiVo reported a $24.5 million loss, or 21 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $20.6 million, or 18 cents per share, from a year ago.
