With the consumer version of the Gear VR now available for purchase in stores, Samsung is ramping up what owners can do with their $100 purchase. Besides playing immersive games and watching Netflix in a faux home theater, users can now surf the web on their virtual reality headset…
Launching in beta on Wednesday is the Samsung Internet for Gear VR app. One of the browser’s main features is watching 360-degree and 3D video in addition to any other flat HTML5 video on the web. Presumably, YouTube’s large collection of 360-degree videos should be watchable through the browser.
The primary means of navigation is by gazing at menus and links, which is likely easier than using the Gear VR’s side trackpad. Screenshots show the same stock keyboard found on Samsung phones, but text can also be entered with voice recognition. The app can import bookmarks and tabs if you use Samsung’s browser on your phone.
Gear VR owners with a Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, Note 4, or Note 5 can download the app from the Oculus Store starting today.
