The legality of driving while wearing Google Glass appears set to face its first test after Glass Explorer Cecilia Abade was ticketed by a California cop.
A cop just stopped me and gave me a ticket for wearing Google Glass while driving!
The exact line says: Driving with Monitor visible to Driver (Google Glass). Is #GoogleGlass illgal while driving or is this cop wrong???
Any legal advice is appreciated!! This happened in California. Do you know any other #GlassExplorers that got a similar ticket anywhere in the US?
Abade, pictured above, reports that she was told the wording of the law concerned is:
Do not drive a vehicle equipped with a video monitor, if the monitor is visible to the driver and displays anything other than vehicle information global mapping displays, external media player (mp3) or satellite radio information
The case may thus rest on what exactly was being displayed at the time. Other Glass Explorers, conscious of the precedent that may be set, have offered to contribute to a legal fund to fight the case.
Across the pond, the UK indicated back in August that it plans to make it illegal to wear Glass while driving. Back then, I expressed the hope that Google might be working on a driving mode that detects when someone is driving a car and limits the data that can be displayed to driving aids.
Glass has already faced bans in locations as diverse as bars to workplaces.
