Google Home app finally getting Dynamic Color theming

Despite the big Material You redesign happening in 2022, the Google Home app did not adopt Dynamic Color, though that’s finally changing.

As part of the Public Preview program, Google Home on Android is testing a “Dynamic color scheme.” The app will “reflect the color scheme you choose for your Android phone or tablet for a more consistent and personalized experience.” Drawing from the wallpaper set on your device, this is available on Android 13 and later.

We’re not yet seeing Dynamic Color in the Google Home app on version 3.27 or 3.28, which is not widely rolled out. There is presumably a server-side component.

At the moment, Google Home has a non-tinted white or dark gray background with a blue accent color used throughout, including the bottom bar and floating action buttons (FABs). That’s the standard hue for apps that don’t leverage Dynamic Color.

The Google (Search) app is the other big Dynamic Color exception, with the vast majority of first-party apps properly themed for a consistent experience.
