Google reportedly working on a standalone VR headset that would not require a phone or PC

In addition to working on a Gear VR-like headset which would require a smartphone, Google is also reportedly working on a standalone virtual reality headset as well. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the headset would not require a smartphone or computer and might be released as soon as this year.

Report: Google’s working on more than just a headset, Android VR coming soon

Not wanting Facebook to have a monopoly on virtual reality, Google has lately been doubling down on the platform. Their new VR division is overseen by a longtime Google exec and is staffed with talent from around the company. The Financial Times is now reporting that Google is working on more than just a Gear VR-like headset, but rather Android VR.

Virtual reality has consumer the smartphone market lately. It seems like every manufacturer is coming out with a smartphone compatible VR headsets. Think of LG’s new VR headset as a premium version of Google Cardboard that’s tailored to fit the G3 in every way. It’s a very nice upgrade over Cardboard and the app selection for VR in Google Play is growing rapidly.

This whole VR movement is very cool, but it’s hard to explain in words what it’s actually like to use a VR headset. It’s just one of those things that you need to experience yourself. At MWC 2015 during HTC’s Utopia in Progress keynote, everyone was completely surprised with the announcement of Vive. This is HTC’s amazing new VR headset/experience that was developed in partnership with Valve. Yep. That Valve.

Since the keynote, I’ve actually had a chance to experience Vive and I thought I’d share a little bit of that with you. Let me tell you… It was incredible. This was definitely the most immersive VR experience I have ever tested…
