Last year, Google Maps added the ability to see rides and estimates from Uber and other ride sharing services when looking for directions. This year, the rides interface on Android and iOS is getting a revamp, as well as direct Uber integration that allows you to book and pay for rides without leaving Maps.
Instead of just a simple list of available services when checking the ride tab, there is now a map of available drivers around you with tabs below for different services. Selecting one reveals a carousel with circular icons that includes many more ride types than before, as well as special offers and promotions.
Meanwhile, Google Maps has gained deep Uber integration. Previously, when using the rides interface, users would be pushed out to the respective ride app to book and pay. The new integration allows users to directly complete your transaction without leaving Maps by signing into your Uber account ahead of time.
Users have full functionality including booking a ride, tracking your driver on a map, and connecting with them without needing the official app installed on your device. Additionally, you can look at useful information like restaurants and waypoints when en route to your destination
Google does not cite whether other ride share services will get similar integration. The new rides interface and Uber features should be live now on Android and iOS.
