Gmail rolls out improved language support with 100 virtual keyboards, transliteration and IMEs

Site default logo image

Google announced today on the Official Gmail Blog that it is adding improved support for languages with a number of new input tools that provide one-click access to language and keyboard layouts. According to Google, 100 virtual keyboards, transliteration, and IMEs are included in the update. The introduction of the new tools means Gmail now supports typing in 75 languages:

Finding the right words can be difficult, especially across languages, and once you choose them, finding a way to typethem can be even harder. Try emailing family in Germany, chatting with friends in China or adding a Russian business partner’s name to your contacts and you may find yourself limited by the language of your keyboard…That’s why today we’re adding more than 100 virtual keyboards, transliteration and IMEs—collectively called input tools—in Gmail. These tools enable you to type in the language and keyboard layout you’re accustomed to, making it easy to keep in touch with family, friends and coworkers from any computer. You can even switch between languages with one click.

Images of LG’s rumored Nexus smartphone surface [Gallery]

Site default logo image

We recently heard from various sources that LG and Google have a new Nexus device in the works expected to launch later this month. Last week, we got a look at some of the alleged specs for the device, including a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB RAM, 8-megapixel camera, and 1,280-by-768 True-HD IPS display, but today we get what might be the first images of the device from baraholka.onliner.by (via AndroidandMe). According to AndroidandMe, its source has handled the device and confirmed the device in the images above is legit. From the device’s About screen, we see JellyBean and “Mako” listed as the model number. With confirmation of the “Mako” codename (previous Nexus devices were codenamed after fish as well), we also get confirmation of the specs via a Nenamark benchmark result.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Ug6XAw6hzaw]

A new website recently launched by the W3C, in partnership with a number of the biggest tech companies, aims to be the ultimate resource for developers looking for information on HTML5, CSS3, and other open-web standards. Accessible at webplatform.org, the new website includes documents, forums, chat, and tutorials, and it will act as a Wiki of sorts in an attempt to “become a comprehensive and authoritative source for web developer documentation.” Apple, Adobe, Facebook, Google, HP, and Microsoft are among the many contributors to the project.

This site has the backing of some of the biggest players on the Web: AdobeAppleFacebookGoogleHPMicrosoft,MozillaNokia, and Opera. These organizations are stewards for the project, enabling W3C to convene the community and grow the site. Beyond their strong organizational commitment, dedicated individuals from these organizations have invested time to make this happen… WebPlatform.org will have accurate, up-to-date, comprehensive references and tutorials for every part of client-side development and design, with quirks and bugs revealed and explained.

It will have in-depth indicators of browser support and interoperability, with links to tests for specific features. It will feature discussions and script libraries for cutting-edge features at various states of implementation or standardization, with the opportunity to give feedback into the process before the features are locked down. It will have features to let you experiment with and share code snippets, examples, and solutions. It will have an API to access the structured information for easy reuse. It will have resources for teachers to help them train their students with critical skills.

Today Google announced the alpha release of Web Platforms Docs on the Google Developers blog.

Sony halts Xperia Tablet S sales over manufacturing defect

Site default logo image

According to a report from Reuters, Sony announced today that it stopped sales of its Xperia tablet S after a flaw was discovered in the manufacturing process:

The problem with the tablet, which is supposed to be water resistant, is the result of a manufacturing flaw at the Chinese plant where it is fabricated, said Sony spokeswoman Noriko Shoji. Sony has not yet decided when it will resume sales, she added.

Sony confirmed that it would fix the issue for any of the 100,000 devices it has shipped since the tablet went on sale in September. On Sony’s website, the company apologized to customers and confirmed the limited number of units affected “may not meet the splash proof specification.” It also provided information on a recall and repair program:

German court rules Motorola does not infringe Microsoft patent

Site default logo image

According to the Mannheim Regional Court in Germany, Motorola Mobility does not infringe on a Microsoft patent enabling a “method and radio interface layer comprising a set of application programming interfaces (APIs).” The patent, which Reuters described as allowing “applications to work on different handsets,” is considered a rare victory for Google’s Motorola. Throughout its countersuits, Microsoft has been able to win three patent cases against Motorola in Germany. As noted by Microsoft-funded blogger Florian Mueller, “Microsoft should actually thank Motorola for this initiative, which at this stage has been far more productive for Microsoft than for Google.”

Microsoft is expected to appeal the decision, as usual, but the Judge Voss did not go over the reasoning behind the ruling during the announcement. Microsoft’s associate general counsel David Howard provided a statement to Reuters:

Google plans more Motorola jobs cuts, will payout $340M this quarter

Site default logo image

While Motorola already announced in the summer that it is cutting around 20 percent of its workforce (roughly 4,000 jobs), a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission today revealed the company plans to cut even more jobs. According to the filing, picked up by CNET, Google will increase severance-related costs 9 percent to $300 million, as well as incur another $40 million in related charges this quarter. Google provided the following statement in the filing in regards to the job cuts that remain outside of the U.S. at this point:

“Google Inc. expects to incur certain charges in connection with planned restructuring actions at its wholly-owned subsidiary Motorola Mobility (Motorola),” said the company’s senior vice president and CFO Patrick Pichette. “Motorola has continued to refine its planned restructuring actions and now expects to broaden those actions to include additional geographic regions outside of the U.S.”

As for where the cuts might take place, The New York Times previously reported that Motorola, which was unprofitable for 14 of its last 16 quarters, planned to reduce its operations in Asia and India. Google also warned that further restructuring might be necessary and significant costs could be involved:

Google officially launches Google Wallet for web content

Site default logo image

We knew it was coming when Google leaked a rough draft of its blog post announcing the feature, but today Google is making things official for Google Wallet for web content. The experimental feature will allow Google Wallet users to purchase web content ranging from 25- to 99 cents for individual webpages with a 30 minute instant refund window, ads, and perpetual access to content for users.

On a website highlighting the new feature, Google explained how the process works. Content owners will be able to embed a Google Wallet banner on a webpage, provide users with a free sample of content, and offer users the ability to purchase with one click. Google has examples of the banner already implemented on websites, including this page on peachpit.com.  When visiting, users can scroll about half way down the page before the banner appears and the user is prompted to pay with Google Wallet. Google noted that users wanting to sell content for more than $1 should instead use its digital goods/games option.

Study: Samsung Galaxy S III sales spike following Apple verdict & iPhone 5 launch

Site default logo image

A new report out of research firm Localytics today suggested sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S III have been growing on a weekly basis with huge spikes following the Samsung/Apple trial and the iPhone 5 introduction. As highlighted in the graphic above, Samsung experienced a 16 percent increase in growth the week of the Apple trial verdict, when compared to just 8 percent the week before, and an average of 9 percent per week since Aug. 1. After the launch of the iPhone 5, new device growth for the S III again jumped to 15 percent compared to 0 percent growth the previous week.

That combined with the slowdown in new Galaxy S3 growth seen leading up to Apple’s announcement (week-over-week new devices were the same as the previous week, resulting in 0% growth) suggest that many consumers were waiting to hear about the new iPhone before making a decision… Note that the average week-over-week growth of 9% means that every week 9% more Galaxy S3 handsets were added than the week before. This also means that the growth effects are cumulative, so while the Samsung device’s weekly new device growth slowed some weeks, it is still adding handsets at a remarkable rate.

Time Warner Cable and AT&T want Google’s Kansas City Fiber deal

Site default logo image

A new report from The Wall Street Journal claimed AT&T and Time Warner Cable are approaching Kansas City officials in an attempt to get the same deal Google has for its Google Fiber gigabit Internet service in the city. According to the report, the companies are after the same free office space, assets, and infrastructure, and government employees the city has agreed to provide Google:

Among the sweeteners granted Google by both cities are free office space and free power for Google’s equipment, according to the agreement on file with the cities. The company also gets the use of all the cities’ “assets and infrastructure”—including fiber, buildings, land and computer tools, for no charge. Both cities are even providing Google a team of government employees “dedicated to the project.”… For the past few months Time Warner Cable has been negotiating with Kansas City, Kan.,to get a “parity agreement” granting it the same concessions as Google got, the city and the company says. Time Warner Cable has already signed such a deal with Kansas City, Mo… AT&T also has approached Kansas City, Mo., for the same deal, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Gmail users can now search inside attachments

As noted by the Google Operating System blog, Gmail recently rolled out the ability to search inside of attachments stored in Gmail. While you have always been able to search for the file name of an attachment in Gmail, the text within attached PDFs, documents, and other files was not previously searchable from your inbox search bar. To access the feature, simply search for “has:attachment” followed by a keyboard or phrase you are trying to find within an attachment.

The good news is that Gmail has finally added support for searching inside attachments. I’ve just tested this feature for .pdf files, .doc documents, .ppt presentations and it works, even though some old attachments may not be indexed yet.

Report: Google acquires Ukrainian facial recognition company Viewdle

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVeSzfKudFo]

According to a report from Forbes (via TNW), Google just closed a deal last week to acquire Ukrainian augmented reality and facial recognition startup Viewdle. The exact amount Google paid for the company is unclear, but Forbes’ sources said it was somewhere in the neighborhood of the $30 million to $45 million. That puts the purchase price in between the $30 million figure the company expected to get and the amount Google paid for similar companies PittPatt ($38 million) and NevenVision ($45 million).

Viewdle has its SocialCamera Android app, both iOS and Android versions of its face recognition SDK, and several patents related to face detection and augmented reality applications. The translation of the report seems to indicate Motorola had previously been an anonymous bidder interested in purchasing the company:
