Last week, we reported that commits throughout code for Chrome OS had been spotted that revealed the incoming launch of Google Assistant on Chrome OS. This was evident thanks to code referring to keyboard shortcuts that would allow the Assistant to be prompted.
Now, yet another commit has been spotted that further reiterates Google Assistant’s imminent launch on the operating system.

Chrome OS’s app launcher is a bit old hat compared to some of Google’s other UI designs. We’re still waiting on Chrome OS’s touchscreen-optimized overhaul to better support 2-in-1 laptop designs, but the new app launcher, dubbed “Peeking Launcher,” is already available with a little work.
With Chrome 59 now rolled out to desktops, Android, and Chrome OS, version 60 is now entering the beta channel with a number of features for developers. However, Android does add a very useful search widget.
Last year Google unveiled a powerful new feature for Nexus/Pixel users — instant tethering. Between a Google phone and Google tablet, users could easily activate the tethering feature without ever pulling out their smartphone. Now, as Android tablets continue to fall off the map, Google seems to be bringing this feature to Chrome OS.
With Chrome 58 rolled out to desktop and Android, version 59 is now entering the beta channel. The browser will finally take advantage of native notifications on macOS, while some Windows users will automatically be upgraded to the 64-bit version of Chrome.

Chrome OS 56 has just been released to the developer channel and along with bringing Android apps to a few new Chromebooks, it also brings along a few interface tweaks which introduce a bit more Material Design to Chrome OS…

Announced at Google I/O 2016, Androids apps and the Play Store are now officially on Chromebooks. Chrome OS 53 is rolling out now to all devices in the developer channel, but the Play Store is only showing up on the ASUS Chromebook Flip. Early users are reporting bugs, but reactions are generally positive with performance improvements over Android apps installed via ARC Welder.

Chrome 49 was released earlier this month to browsers and Android. It added many new APIs and under-the-hood changes for developers, but was mostly lacking new user features. Version 49 for Chrome OS, on the other hand, introduces a Material Design audio player and provides an updated look at what the Material redesign of the browser will look like.
