In announcing the new Premium Lite subscription tier today, YouTube reaffirmed its commitment to music on the platform.  

The YouTube app for TV — not to be confused with YouTube TV — is reportedly looking to take on a redesign in order to make more paid content available to users. This move would put the app in line to compete with other paid content providers like Amazon Prime Video or Disney+.

Following reports last month, YouTube Premium Lite has just launched for $7.99/month in the US and promises to make “most” videos ad-free.

Earlier this year, YouTube became the “most frequently used service for listening to podcasts in the U.S.” and it’s now seeing “1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content.” 

Introduced a few months ago, the AI dubbing function is one of the few excellent uses of the technology to try and open videos to a wider global audience. To help with that YouTube on Android TV now has a “Dubbed” tag to help you see which videos have been translated using AI.

YouTube is improving the experience of listening to songs and watching music videos on TVs with Display options, like live lyrics.
