Google details more about Android Wear, full SDK available later today

On stage at its Google I/O developer conference, the company talked wearables, as we expected it to. Google says that Android users check their phones “an average of 125 times a day,” so the company hopes that Android Wear paired with various wearables will help cut down on this number. Demoing it on an LG G Watch, Google showed more details about the Android Wear interface. The company also announced that starting today, the full Android Wear SDK is available to developers. Most importantly, Google announced that the LG G Watch will be available on Google Play today, although a price is still yet to be determined. The company also announced that the the Samsung Gear Live will be available today, as well. The Moto 360 will be available later this summer.

Google showed many of the interface features of Android Wear that have been teased quite a bit this year. Your phone will sync to the Android Wear device of your choice, and from there, you will be able to view all of your notifications and Google Now cards directly on the watch. You can swipe up and down to navigate between notifications and cards, while left and right swiping brings up details and actions, in addition to allowing you to dismiss. Any notification you view or dismiss syncs back to your phone so you don’t have to deal with them twice. Android Wear also, of course, includes a variety of voice activated features, including the ability to set reminders and perform searches using the “Ok, Google” command.

Google also showed how a watch with Android Wear can add more security to your device. With an Android “L” device paired with a wearable, your phone can communicate with the watch and determine if the two are near each other. If they are, then you won’t have to enter your passcode.

Google, later today, will also make the full Android Wear SDK available to developers. This will allow them to build apps optimized for the watches and other wearables. Google demonstrated the ability to order a pizza directly on your watch or request a car with the Lyft app.
