YouTube now uses deep neural networks to pick better video thumbnails

When you upload a video to YouTube, the site processes each frame individually and passes them through an algorithm to try and find a few of the best to be your video’s thumbnail. You get to pick between the ones it chooses, or you can upload your own. And while many YouTube creators opt for the latter option, those who aren’t as dedicated usually just go with whatever frame the site chooses.

Now, thanks to deep neural networks, the algorithm that picks the best frames is much more powerful…

Low-quality content aggregators are the big losers in Google’s Panda update

Site default logo image

Earlier this week, Google rolled out Panda 4.0 and Pay Day 2.0. These updates to the search algorithm were touted as being designed to further reduce the ranking of low-quality and spammy content. According to analysis by Searchmetrics, Panda and Pay Day did just this, with websites that offer undifferentiated content suffering in terms of overall ranking.

However, Panda did not just punish websites: various major websites actually increased their rank in Google Search as a result of the change in algorithm. From the study:

Google’s latest updates to its search algorithm continue the crusade against spam, low-quality content

Google has made two notable changes to its search algorithm in the past 24 hours, both of which continue Google’s crusade to keep its search results relevant. The 4.0 release of the Google Panda algorithm is intended to make it more difficult for websites with poor quality to rank highly in search results (via SearchEngineLand).

Payday Loan Algorithm 2.0 was also released yesterday, and it targets “very spammy queries,” and is unrelated to Panda’s rollout:

Samsung explains new tech in the gorgeous Galaxy S5 display

Site default logo image

We’ve already know all the specs on Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy S5 and that includes its gorgeous 1920 x 1080, 5.1” FHD Super AMOLED with a pixel density of 432 ppi. It’s definitely a step up from any Samsung smartphone before it, and today the company took some time to explain exactly what it’s done to achieve the new experience.

More than simply just the hardware specs, Samsung has made a lot of advancements with its display technology this time around that provides a faster response time, improved color realization, and the best possible viewing experience in every lighting condition. Samsung starts by explaining a new Adapt Display algorithm for the S5 that “analyzes incoming lights & content and automatically optimizes the color range, saturation, and sharpness of your display.”

Google tweaks News algorithm to feature standout stories

Site default logo image

Google has made a small tweak to their Google News algorithm, which will enable the news aggregator to display featured stories alongside their usual content. A publication can attempt to get their story featured by adding a certain metadata code, and if picked the story will then be recognized by a “featured” tag.

If a publication misuses the tag by adding it to stories more than seven times a week, the algorithm will learn to disregard or sometimes not even recognize the publication. We’d certainly hope they wouldn’t.

Report: Google Plus passes 43 million users

Site default logo image

Paul Allen has released the latest number from his algorithm, which reveals that Google Plus has passed 43 million users. While these numbers are unofficial, Allen has been pretty accurate in the past. Allen’s algorithm is based on Plus surnames.

In the past, according to PlusHeadlines, Allen has been startlingly accurate:

  • July 4th – 1.7 million users
  • July 9th – 4.5 million users
  • July 12 – 10 million users
  • September 9th – 28.7 million users
  • September 22nd – 43.4 million users

43 million users is certainly great for the young social network, but in comparison Facebook announced today that they get about 500 million users on a busy day. They’ve got some catching up to do. via The Next Web
