We’ve known for quite some time that RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet would have access to Android apps via the QNX platform and the Android app player. However, today a report from Bloomberg suggests sources have confirmed the company will introduce “QNX phones in “early” 2012″ that will also have support for Android Market apps.
The report notes the devices will be getting the same Android player as the PlayBook only “tweaked to fit the different screen size and resolution of various BlackBerry models”. The app player would also come pre-installed to avoid frustrations similar to that surrounding the PlayBook launch.
RIM has been on a huge decline in recent months and is quickly losing market share thanks to outdated BlackBerry OS, and less then stellar sales of their current smartphone lineup. This is why it’s not surprising they aren’t shying away from embracing the Android Market’s 250,000+ apps, a number approximately six times higher than RIM’s App World. They are even supporting iOS devices with their latest version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
From the report:
“Being able to run Android apps, that’s a big plus,” said Steven Li, a Raymond James Ltd. analyst in Toronto with an “outperform” rating on the stock. “If you get the tonnage of Android apps and the top 50 apps through BlackBerry’s App World, that addresses many of the concerns people have about RIM’s ecosystem.”
RIM hasn’t officially confirmed the Android app compatibility for their QNX smartphones, but the report claims an upgrade for the Android Player on the PlayBook could come later this year.

At the first glance it looks like BB is going to switch their mobile OS but after reading through the news, come a new story…
There will be a player to run the android apps. It is just like running VMWare/virtual Desktop on windows/Linux. Android apps will not run on their full potential if used by some virtual machine and it will require BB to provide some very awesome hardware to run both OS supported applications.
People who have used Virtual Machines know that guest OS doesn’t perform at its potential as well as giving hard time to Host OS.
It would have been better if BB could provide native support to Android. They can develop same BB apps and their functionality using Android(I think better).
Keep the fingers crossed BB users out there…This is another major win for Android OS
