Samsung confirms 20 Galaxy devices now compatible w/ new Gear wearables

While some of us have been able to get Samsung’s new Gear fitness tracking wearables working with non-Samsung Galaxy devices, Samsung is still only officially supporting 20 Galaxy devices after first launching the wearables with only compatibility for its flagship devices. Samsung today provided details on the exact lineup of compatible devices, which as of yesterday includes 12 Galaxy smartphones and 8 tablets.

As of yesterday, the devices you see in the images above are all compatible with the Samsung Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and Gear Fit. Those are the devices that are officially supported through the ‘Gear Manager’ or ‘Gear Fit Manager’ apps, but we managed to get the Gear Fit working with the new HTC One M8.

Samsung says Android is still top priority as it plans Tizen smartphones for Q2

While Samsung has confirmed plans to debut phones running Tizen instead of Android,  senior vice president of Samsung’s product strategy team Yoon Han-kil says Android will remain Samsung’s “main business.” The executive also confirmed in the same interview with Reuters that two Tizen smartphones will debut in Q2 with Tizen being used on devices launching only in certain markets:

“We had tried to launch (Tizen) with DoCoMo and Orange … but couldn’t because of poor market conditions. We have changed our strategy and will release the phones in a few countries where we can do well,” he said, adding that he thought Tizen would have to account for up to 15 percent of Samsung’s total smartphone shipments to become a successful platform.

Samsung officially made the switch from an almost all Android ecosystem for its mobile devices to Tizen for its latest round of Gear smartwatches. However, Yoon also confirmed to Reuters that the company plans on releasing an Android smartwatch later in the year, which will presumably be based off Google’s recently unveiled Android Wear platform.

Job listing hints at Google Fiber plans for New York City

Google recently announced plans to expand its Google Fiber Gigabit internet and TV service beyond Kansas City & Austin to 34 more cities and it looks like it also has plans for New York City. Geek.com points us to a job listing looking for a regional sales manager based in New York that would “manage multiple teams that evangelize Google Fiber services to MDU (multi-dwelling apartments and condos) and large SMB owners.”

You will hire and manage a team that proactively reaches out and and articulates how Google Fiber Solutions can help make their work more productive. You will excel at team development, sales training and market strategy, while cultivating a strong base of new clients and working with fellow technical Googlers to devise solutions to meet customer needs.

Google has slowly been rolling out its Gigabit Google Fiber service starting with Kansas City and Austin since first unveiling Fiber back in 2012. In February, it announced plans for its biggest rollout yet including upcoming launches scheduled for Raleigh Durham, NC, Atlanta, San Jose, CA, Phoenix, AZ, Portland, and many surrounding areas. New York would be a big one to add to the list, but Google has yet to confirm any official plans. 

Google buys Titan Aerospace, makers of solar-powered high altitude drones

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google is purchasing Titan Aerospace, makers of high altitude, solar-powered drone aircrafts, and a company that the report notes Facebook was rumored to be in talks with earlier in the year. Google is said to be using the technology for a few of its still early in development projects but also possibly Maps and other consumer facing products:

Google said the Titan team will work closely with Google’s Project Loon, which is building large, high-altitude balloons that send Internet signals to areas of the world that are currently not online. Titan may also work with Makani, another early-stage Google project that is developing an airborne wind turbine that it hopes will generate energy more efficiently.

Titan says its drones will be able to collect real-time, high-resolution images of the earth, carry other atmospheric sensors and support voice and data services. That type of technology could also help other Google businesses, including its Maps division.

There were no financial details disclosed, but Google provided the following statement to the WSJ:

Google’s redesigned icons for Android leak in screenshot?

A new rumor originating from AndroidPolice that seems to have some pretty solid evidence backing it up shows that Google might be working a slick new redesign for Android’s stock icons. The site posted the image above showing what appears to be redesigned icons for most of the core preloaded Android apps including Play Music, Books, Movies, and Games, alongside Google+, Calendar, People, Chrome, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Hangouts, Camera, and the Play Store. As noted in the report, the icons to seem to more closely resemble the icons Google uses on the web for these services, which would make sense if Google aims to have a familiar look and feel across devices.

T-Mobile says it will end domestic overages in May, petitions AT&T, Sprint, & Verizon to do the same

Abolish-OveragesFollowing a number of new initiatives launched last week including its new Simple Starter plan and new perks for tablet users, T-Mobile issued a press release today calling for an end to overages and urging consumers to sign a petition for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon to do the same.

Traditional wireless plans start with a low monthly fee for a fixed amount of domestic minutes, texts or data.  Once consumers go over those limits – even by a little – they’re hit with dramatically higher rates and extreme penalties.  These plans seem purpose-built to drive customers over that invisible line into massive overage charges.

In the press release, the carrier noted it will end all domestic overages in starting in May for the June billing cycle (something we thought it was doing since the beginning of Uncarrier?). The wording also sounds a lot like it could continue to charge overages for international use.  T-Mobile’s new Simple Starter plan does not include the free international perks it unveiled for other plans last year, so it looks like the carrier is giving itself some room to continue charging overages for international use in some cases.

T-Mobile has been doing a lot of talking about ending overages, and its approach might be slightly more transparent than the other guys, but at the end of the day an overage is an overage and even T-Mobile charges some customers for more data. It’s new Simple Starter plan for example which caps at 500MB for LTE data, will force users to purchase $5/day or $10/week “additional data sessions.”

BELLEVUE, Wash. – April 14, 2014 – T-Mobile US, Inc. (NYSE: TMUS) today shifted the national conversation on wireless to a new level, unveiling its latest Un-carrier move – a campaign to eliminate overage penalties, one of the most reviled wireless industry practices. While abolishing overages for all customers on T-Mobile consumer plans, its CEO has also laid down a challenge to the nation’s largest carriers, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, to do the same.

More than 20 million Americans were hit with punitive overage charges in 2013. And these penalties from the three largest U.S. carriers take more than an incredible $1 billion out of consumers’ pockets every year.

“Today I’m laying down a challenge to AT&T, Verizon and Sprint to join T-Mobile in ending these outrageous overage penalties for all consumers – because it’s the right thing to do,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “Overage fees are flat out wrong. Agree with me? Join me in putting this challenge to all the major national carriers by signing my petition on Change.org. Right here. Take one minute to be a part of this consumer movement.”

Last year, T-Mobile banished annual service contracts and began phasing out overage charges with the launch of Simple Choice.  T-Mobile’s stance against annual service contracts is now well known by consumers, and today it’s taking on the even more unpopular and unjustified practice of slamming consumers with surprise bills in the form of overages charges.

“Charging overage fees is a greedy, predatory practice that needs to go,” continued Legere. “Starting in May for bills arriving in June – regardless of whether you’re on Simple Choice, Simple Starter or an older plan, we’re abolishing overages for good. Period.”

Traditional carriers’ entry-level plans lure customers in with a low monthly fee for a fixed amount of domestic minutes, texts or data. Once consumers go over those limits – even by a little – they’re hit with much higher rates, often dramatically higher.  These plans are purpose-built to drive customers over that invisible line into massive overage charges. The result has been a culture of fear, worry and surprise every time the wireless bill arrives. For example, an individual on AT&Ts entry-level plan, advertised at $45 per month, will pay $125 if he uses just the average amount of data for a U.S. smartphone user (1.5 GB per person).

“The worst thing about these overage fees is that they’re often inflicted on those who can least afford them,” added Legere. “As an advocate for consumers, we’re putting a stop to that. I personally won’t be satisfied until we obliterate this shameful practice from the entire wireless industry.”

To give a voice to U.S. wireless consumers, Legere has started an online petition at Change.org/AbolishOverages calling on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint to end overages. You are invited to sign the petition and add your voice to the growing movement to rid the wireless industry of domestic overages once and for all.

Samsung teases “Kapture The Moment” event slated for April 29, likely next-gen Galaxy Zoom device

Samsung Mobile is teasing an upcoming an announcement at a press event scheduled for April 29 and from the tagline on the invitation (above) it looks like the announcements will be camera or photography related. Samsung isn’t offering many details other than the “Kapture The Moment” line on the invitation, but we have been seeing more and more rumors for upcoming next-gen Galaxy Zoom devices that might fit the bill.

More specifically, the latest leak of the yet to be announced Galaxy S5 Zoom was also attached to a rumor that the device will be branded K Zoom, something that makes a little more sense when seeing the K in the “Kapture The Moment” branding above. The device is rumored to include a much thinner and lighter design, a 20MP shooter, 10x zoom, NFC, Android 4.4.2, a 1280×720 4.8-inch display, 2GB of RAM and a Samsung Exynos 5 Hexa CPU.

Google AdWords pilot program links online clicks to in-store purchases

Adword-mobileAccording to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Google has recently launched a new pilot program that will see it work with advertisers to “match the anonymous tracking cookies on users’ computers to in-store sales information collected by data providers.” The program would be a way for Google to link advertising campaigns running across its services online to actual people walking into the store and making purchases. The report described how Google is able to link clicks on ads online to purchases in brick and mortar locations:

Google’s new pilot program, dubbed In-Store Attribution Transaction Reporting in AdWords, works a bit differently, according to the people familiar with it… When a user clicks on an ad, Google sends an anonymous “click ID” to the advertiser. The advertiser likely has a cookie on the user’s computer, and matches that cookie to the click ID.

Days or weeks later, the user might buy a product in the retailer’s store. The data company and the retailer can take that purchase and link it back to the user’s cookie. Then they match the cookie to Google’s click ID. Ultimately, Google can tell advertisers which ads generated in-store sales and how much they generated, the people said.

Google confirmed the program to the publication saying, “We are running a number of tests to help clients use their own sales data to measure how their search campaigns impact sales.

Chrome Beta 35 for Android brings Undo Tab Close, Chromecast video support, & more

Following yesterday’s release of Chrome Beta 35 for the desktop, the Android beta started rolling out last night with a few notable new features that will soon be making their way to all users. In the beta, you can now “Undo Tab Close,” which means if you accidentally close a tab you’ll now be able to restore it. There are also improvements for multi-window devices, which we assume means tablets that support apps running side by side, as well as “fullscreen video with subtitles and HTML5 controls.”

Perhaps the most notable feature is initial support for Chromecasting videos. Google is making it easier to cast videos from Chrome for Android to the TV through its $35 Chromecast HDMI stick, but for now it’s not sharing a lot of details on what videos you can expect to work. It does note that “YouTube support for casting videos is not complete.”

You can expect these features to be rolling out for all users in the near future. Until then, you can try out the new features in the updated beta release

Google plans to let anyone in the US buy Glass for one day only on April 15 (Update: Confirmed)

Update: Google has confirmed on Google+ that it does plan to open the Explorer program in the US for a period of time on April 15th.

Google has been slowly opening up its Google Glass Explorer Program to more people, but it’s about to let anyone in the US join the program and purchase Glass, at least for one day. TheVerge posted the document above showing what appears to be an upcoming Google Glass “Explorer Program Expansion,” or at least a proposal for one, that would see Google selling Glass for the usual $1500 through Google.com/glass to anyone in the US that wants one. That opposed to the waiting list that Google is currently taking sign ups for.

Android will soon continually scan for malicious apps even after installation

androidsmartphonesGoogle just made some announcements about how it’s beefing up security on Android. In a post on the Official Android blog, Android Security Engineer Rich Cannings announced Google is introducing improvements to how the “Verify apps” process works. While Android already scans apps at the time of installation, even ones outside of Google Play, it will soon continually scan devices to keep an eye on apps that after installation.

Nike+ Fuel Lab opens to expand fitness tracking platform to third parties starting w/ RunKeeper, Strava, MyFitnessPal

Nike announced today that it is opening a Nike+ Fuel Lab in San Francisco that will help it grow what has become one of the leading fitness tracking platform among mobile device users. Nike is hoping the new facility will help the Nike+ Fuel platform remain a leader as fitness tracking becomes more popular on wearables and mobile devices. It will use the facility to team up with app developers and integrate the platform into other products in the fitness tracking space. Last year Nike hosted a Nike+ Accelerator program that saw startups pitching ideas and demo products for the platform, and the success of the program inspired the more permanent Fuel Lab for similar efforts.

We are excited about evolving NikeFuel to deliver richer experiences that make it easier for all athletes to reach their potential,” said Stefan Olander, Nike’s Vice President of Digital Sport. “The demand for simpler data-powered experiences is soaring, and all-day sensing is more available on mobile and wearable devices than ever before. Nike is committed to broadening the use of NikeFuel through collaborations with industry leaders to create smarter products and services.”

The new Nike+ Fuel Lab will see the company working with app developers and other companies to integrate the NikeFuel platform into their products. That means Nike’s hardware— like the FuelBand fitness tracker and SportWatch— will then work with the partner apps and syncing data between the apps will become seamless. That’s a feature request you might have noticed in the majority of reviews for Nike’s FuelBand hardware in the past. Nike announced a few of the companies it’s teaming up with initially at the new Nike+ Fuel Lab and they include popular fitness tracking apps for mobile and web including RunKeeperMyFitnessPal, and Strava

Google Play and Sonos now make beautiful music together

For a long time, owners of Sonos hardware have been disgruntled with the inability to access their music collection from Google’s Play Music service. Sonos provides slick hardware that pulls in music collections from various services, and starting today the two companies have announced that Google Play Music is now officially supported. That means that you’ll be able to play music to Sonos directly through an updated Google Play Music app as well as through the Sonos controller app (as pictured above). The announcement was made today in a brief tweet by Google and a blog post on the Sonos website.

After screenshots landed on Geek.com of a redesigned Gmail app that was reportedly in testing, we felt confident enough to report on additional details we received from sources about a “Google 2.0” redesign in the works. We also noted that Google was planning similar redesigns for some of its other apps that would make them more scalable for wearables and introduce additional gesture and voice features. Backing up our report, today,Geek posted another set of screenshots showing what is is apparently a similar redesign for Google’s Calendar app.

Dropbox launches new “Carousel” photo & video gallery app

Dropbox is introducing its latest product today, a photo and video management app called Carousel that integrates many of the features from the photo storage service Snapjoy acquired by Dropbox back in 2012.

The company unveiled the app at an event today in San Francisco as a gallery to store and share all of your photos and videos.  The app is built for quick and easy sharing of one or multiple photos to phone contacts or email addresses (even if the recipient doesn’t have a Dropbox account), allowing you to get around the upload limitations usually associated with sharing photos. With everything backed up in full resolution directly to Dropbox, it essentially becomes a standalone app to manage just photos and videos that you want to store in Dropbox.

With Dropbox, we built a home for your photos and videos but never gave you a great way to experience them. We’d like you to meet Carousel, the newest member of the Dropbox family. It’s a gallery that houses your entire life’s memories. Even more, Carousel lets you share and relive these memories in private conversations with friends and family.

Carousel is now available as a free download on the App Store for iOS and the Play Store for Android.

Motorola Mobility promotes Rick Osterloh to lead role of President and COO

Rick-OsterlohMotorola Mobility announced today that Rick Osterloh, former Senior Vice President of Product Management to President and COO of the company.:

Rick is a Silicon Valley veteran and a familiar face across Motorola, where he has been leading all product management and helping to define the ‘go forward’ strategy for the past two years. Rick first joined the company 7 years ago when Motorola acquired Good, and he started Motorola down the Android path while managing product and engineering teams. Between stints here, Rick joined Skype, where he oversaw design and product for more than 250 million monthly users until it was acquired by Microsoft.

Last year Google announced that it would sell Motorola, which it purchased for $12.5 billion just a couple years prior, to Lenovo for just shy of $3 billion. That deal is still in the process of clearing regulatory approvals and will see Google hold onto “the vast majority” of Motorola’s patent portfolio as well as the Advanced Technology And Products group.

Following the deal with Lenovo, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside announced that he would be leaving after 10 years with Google to take on a role as CEO of Dropbox. When he finally left at the end of March, Google announced that long-time Googler Jonathan Rosenberg would take over as COO. Today’s announcement was made by Jonathan who said he’ll stick around as “Google liaison and advisor to Motorola through the transition period supporting Rick.” In his new role, Motorola said today that Osterloh will report to the Motorola Operating Board at Google until the acquisition to Lenovo is complete.

T-Mobile’s new $40 plan gets you unlimited talk, text & 500MB of LTE data, no international perks

T-Mobile is about to kick off three days of announcements for new initiatives starting with a new $40 Simple Starter plan that it says is a first for a U.S. carrier. Starting on April 12, T-Mobile claims the new $40 plan will make it the first to offer “unlimited talk and text, and up to 500MB of 4G LTE data and tethering with no data overages” at that price point. In this case, since the LTE data isn’t unlimited, no overages isn’t entirely accurate. It  really means you’ll have to purchase additional data once you hit that 500MB cap for the month. In its press release, T-Mobile compared the new plan to AT&T’s entry-level plan:

T-Mobile contrasted its new flat-rate value plan against AT&T’s entry-level plan, whose costs immediately jump by $20 increments – in what amounts to a massive 44% price hike on those customers least able to absorb overages and bill shock. With Simple Starter, you’ll get a ton more data compared to AT&T’s 300MB, and you’ll never pay data overages again – ever. And with data capped at 500MB, you’ll never pay more until you choose to pay more – by purchasing additional data sessions whenever you like.

T-Mobile’s argument is that its method of charging for more data is more transparent than the other guys, but at the end of the day an overage is an overage and paying for more data will cost you $5/day or $10/week for T-Mobile’s “additional data sessions.” In reality, AT&T’s $45 300MB plan is comparable considering it only charges users $5 more for the next tier up, $50 for 1GB a month.

The new Simple Starter plan won’t, however, have access to the unlimited international data and texting perks that come with T-Mobile’s Simple Choice plans. As Windows XP dies, Google offers incentives to switch to Chromebooks

Today marks the day that Microsoft will officially end support for Windows XP and for Google that means stepping up deals on Chromebooks to encourage users to switch away form Windows completely. Microsoft is of course encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 8, but President of Google Enterprise Amit Singh published a blog post today suggesting business users would be better off upgrading to Chromebooks instead.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Pro ads continue mocking iPad & Kindle

Samsung today posted a series of ads for its new Galaxy Pro tablets and with them continues the theme of directly mocking Apple. This time the target is the iPad Air.  In one ad called “Multi User” (above), Samsung highlights the ability to have multiple user accounts on the Galaxy Pro tablet, a highly requested feature among iOS users that Samsung notes is still not available on the iPad.

Another ad, titled “Pixel Density” (below) takes on the iPad’s Retina display, claiming that the Galaxy Pro tablet has a better looking display due to a higher pixel density. Samsung’s Tab Pro 10.1 2014 tablet includes a resolution of 2560 x 1600 with a pixel density of 299 compared to the iPad’s 2048 x 1536, 264 ppi display.

YouTube now lets you upload gameplay clips directly from Xbox One

YouTube announced that it’s rolling out a newly updated YouTube app for Xbox One today that brings the ability to upload gameplay clips directly from the Xbox’s Game DVR feature. The app will also now support the Xbox One Snap Mode:

YouTube now also supports Xbox One Snap Mode (so you can move it to one side of your screen, where it will continue to run while you do something else on the main part of your screen) ’cause ain’t nobody got time to switch between screens while in the middle of a game. Watch a how-to video while stuck on a board, play an awesome music playlist while you finish a level, or catch up with the guys from TeamCrafted while browsing on your Xbox One.

In addition, users will be able to earn 10 different achievements, such as UUDDLRLRBA for watching more than 5 hours of gaming videos, through the new YouTube for Xbox One app.

You’ll be able to upload new gameplay clips you’ve recorded to YouTube through a new My Uploads option in the app rolling out today on Xbox One. You’ll first have to make sure the feature is enabled by going to Settings and selecting “Share game clips” and “Share on social network.”

Google enters deal with startup Room 77 to improve hotel search features

The Wall Street Journal reports that Google has struck a deal with startup Room 77 to boost its current hotel search efforts. The company, which makes hotel-booking software, will be joining Google’s hotel-search team that is currently working various efforts related to Google’s Hotel Finder product. In addition, Google is said to have also struck deals to “add more hotel-related content to its search results, including photos and room rate and availability information.”

Waze CEO says Google paid $1.15B for the company

In a blog post today published on LinkedIn from CEO and co-founder of mapping company Waze, we learn what we didn’t know at the time of Google’s purchase of the company back in June. While industry estimates at the time put the value of the deal somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.1 to $1.3 billion, today Noam Bardin confirmed that the final purchase price was $1.15 billion.

Not only did Bardin reveal the exact price paid— although there was no mention of whether that number is in cash or otherwise— he also seemingly mentions that the deal was made due to pressure from investors:

One of Waze’s mistakes was the valuation of its A round which significantly diluted the founders. Perhaps, had we held control of the company, as the Founders of Facebook, Google, Oracle or Microsoft had, Waze might still be an independent company today.

Twitter acquires ‘Cover’, makers of context aware lock screen for Android

Cover, makers of a popular context aware lock screen app for Android, today announced that it is joining Twitter. The team didn’t disclose any financial details related to the deal, but said that it would be joining the Twitter team and continuing to offer its lock screen app on Google Play.

“Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android. They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter — more useful and more contextual — and together we’re going to make that happen,” the founders of Cover said when makig the announcement in a blog post today. They also added that Cover will be creating “something even better at Twitter” and would provide an update if things change regarding availability of the Cover app for Android.

Livestream launches Google Glass app for live broadcasting video

Popular live streaming service Livestream announced today that it’s launching a Google Glass app that will allow users to broadcast directly from the hardware. While you could always accomplish live streaming with Google Glass using Google’s own Hangouts app, this will loop into Livestream’s ecosystem, allowing video you shoot with Glass to go straight to an event page on Livestream’s website and mobile apps. You’ll also be able to view feedback from your audience and respond with your voice. For now you’ll have to scan a QR code on the event’s page with Glass to start streaming, but soon you’ll be able to initiate Glass streaming through the Livestream mobile apps.
