Last year Honor helped change the game in terms of hardware on budget devices with the Honor 5X, but it wasn’t a perfect device. It lacked a bit in terms of specifications, and the pre-loaded software didn’t help matters. Now, Honor is bringing the successor to that device, the Honor 6X, to the United States.
Android skins from Chinese OEMs have always been pretty bad, and Huawei has always been one of the worst contenders. Despite releasing awesome hardware, it’s always been hard to recommend the company’s devices due to the software. With the release of Nougat, though, things are improving, and now we know when Honor 8 users can expect that update.
After being teased earlier this month, Honor has just made the new Honor Magic smartphone official. The new “concept-to-life” smartphone brings curved glass edges on both sides, a super-thin design, and dual-cameras.

Following the success of the Honor 5X, Huawei’s sub-brand has today officially announced the Honor 6X in China (via Fonearena). Just like the Honor 5X, the 6X packs an all-metal build, mid-range specifications, and much more, all at a very affordable price tag.

Truecaller and Huawei have today announced (via TechCrunch) that a new partnership between the two companies will bring Truecaller’s caller ID and spam protection to Huawei’s smartphones. This deal applies for devices in regions such as the US, Middle East, North Africa, Southeast Asia, and India. It will debut on the recently launched Honor 8.
The newly-announced Honor 8 flagship has a lot going for it, and now there’s something else. According to the phone’s Product Manager, Taylor Wimberly, the Honor 8 — and phones that proceed it, apparently — will be getting software updates for a full 24 months after its launch:
From this year we are making a commitment to provide customers with access to new features (at least once every three months during the first 12 months) for up to 24 months following each product launch. We will keep providing access to security and software updates to fix bugs and enhance user experience in a timely manner.

Honor has announced through its official Twitter channel that customers with the Honor 7 should start to see Android Marshmallow land on their devices within the next couple of weeks. Currently, the Huawei brand is rolling out the update to beta testers, and will push the software to all other users once that staged roll-out is over.
I’ve been using my Honor 5X on and off for about a week now, and my thoughts on the phone pretty much align with what everyone else is saying: The phone’s significance is not that it’s an amazingly great phone, but that it’s yet another inch toward driving down the price of good phones in general.
In the future, a “budget” phone (you know, the $150 Moto Gs of the world) will offer everything that today’s flagships tout. They will be made of metal, they will have fingerprint sensors, they will have more than capable processors, they will have great cameras, and they will have good software.
To me, the Honor 5X is our first peek at such a future. But it’s definitely not without its flaws…

Honor, Huawei’s sub-brand of lower-tier smartphones popular in developing countries, invited us out to Shenzhen, China to check out the company’s 2nd anniversary festival. It kicked off yesterday morning, filled with tons of carnival games and shows that encompass “bravery,” several sponsored booths from Honor‘s partners in China, huge stuffed Huawei mascots walking around, Chinese pop music from half a dozen artists, and more. It’s been fun to say the least…

Huawei’s global success over recent months has been well documented. In its homeland it’s just overtaken Xiaomi as the biggest smartphone vendor, and on a global scale it’s only behind Apple and Samsung in terms of shipped devices.
