HTC One Max receiving its update to Android 5.0 Lollipop in some regions

We wouldn’t blame you for not remembering HTC’s One Max, a 5.9-inch smartphone unveiled by HTC a couple of months after the standard One. It hasn’t received a hardware update since it was made available in 2013, and considering that HTC has no plan to release another One mini, we don’t expect it to see a refresher either. But anyway, the One Max surprisingly enough seems to receiving a software update that pushes it to Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

HTC ‘strongly denies’ rumors of possible ASUS acquisition

Following a report on Friday morning from Reuters, rumors began flying about a potential ASUS acquisition of struggling HTC. The original report was clear, with ASUS Chief Financial Officer David Chang quoted as saying that “the chances of an actual takeover are not big…” This morning, however, HTC has come out to say matter-of-factly that it “will not consider the acquisition.”

We strongly deny the news. We didn’t contact Asusteck[sic] and will not consider the acquisition. As an international brand, HTC will continue to design world-class innovative smart devices through its pursuit of brilliance brand promise.

HTC has been struggling over the last few years, and the problems have been amplified as of late following the company’s launch of its lackluster HTC One M9 smartphone. HTC CEO Cher Wang came out to apologize publicly for the company’s poor performance earlier this year, and it slashed its performance guidance for the April-June quarter following a 20% drop in its stock early last week.

HTC shows off limited-edition One M9 ‘Ink’ handsets in collaboration with Jourdan Dunn

Desperate times call for desperate measures. HTC announced back in April that because “brand image is more important than volume,” the company was naming supermodel Jourdan Dunn as its new global ambassador and would be working in partnership with her to release a set of limited edition One M9s. The phones would have a custom body art-inspired engraving made in partnership with celebrity ink designer Cally-Jo Pothecary (yes, three levels of partnership here), but all we got to see at the time was the sketch above which would be used in the limited collection. Today the company has shown off what the device actually looks like with this engraving on it, in both gold and metallic silver:

HTC at the time insinuated in its press release that multiple different sketches would be used, but today’s blog post seems to indicate that this is the only limited edition engraving that will come out of this collaboration. This wouldn’t be too surprising to us, with the company slashing its performance outlook practically by the day, consistently making new promises of which we’re still waiting to see how they’ll play out.

HTC has a website up where you can learn more and register your interest in purchasing one of these, but if we’re being honest you probably don’t need to rush to get in on this. No word on pricing or when these handsets will actually be available.

HTC’s sales slump continues, performance guidance slashed for April-June quarter

HTC hasn’t been having the best run lately and that continues today. After promising this past Wednesday at an investor meeting to reinvigorate its line through a new product in October and “improved design and innovation,” the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has posted bleak earnings results for the month of May with revenue of NT$10.79 billion (US$347 million), down 50% over the same month last year and down 11% from April’s revenue of NT$13.5 billion (US$440 million). Revenue for April was down itself 33% from the month prior and 38% from April 2014.

HTC introduces a 24-karat gold One M9, takes its photo with an iPhone

Introducing smart devices made of gold isn’t exactly a new concept (and it’s gone mainstream to a new degree as of late), but now Taiwanese phone maker HTC is on board. Some think the phone is gorgeous in gold, and some think it’s absolutely disgusting. Either way, the company’s flagship smartphone, the One M9, isn’t going to make its way up to par with the Android flagships with a 24-karat gold body.

Oh, and it looks like HTC also managed to accidentally reveal that photos they took to unveil the phone… were taken with an iPhone.

HTC unveils HTC One ME, a dual-sim smartphone packing MediaTek’s Helio X10 chipset

Site default logo image

Further differentiating its lineup (or complicating it, however you look at it), HTC has just unveiled a new dual-sim HTC One for the Chinese market called the HTC One ME, previously believed to be called ME9, via its website. The high-end smartphone matches the specifications and physical design of the One M9+ but only has a single 20MP round camera on the back, like the One E9+.

Android Lollipop for Sprint’s HTC One E8 rolling out now

Almost daily, Android Lollipop makes its way to yet another slew of handsets across a variety of carriers. Yesterday, HTC’s Mo Versi (the guy who is basically the bringer of all the update joy to HTC device owners) came out to say that Sprint’s HTC One E8 has been approved for Lollipop and that the update would begin rolling out “tomorrow.” Well, tomorrow is today.

If you’re an owner of the Sprint HTC One E8, be sure to keep an eye on your phone for the software to roll out over-the-air. If you’re the owner of another important device that has yet to receive Android Lollipop, keep your eyes on this space. Even though we’re going into Google I/O 2015 next week with some devices still not updated, it’s only a matter of time before your handset gets Lollipop, too.

It won’t be long before we’re doing Android “M” rollout posts.

HTC One ME9 leaked in new render, looks a lot like a plastic M9+

Upleaks is at it again, today posting press renders of what is likely to be the company’s forthcoming HTC One ME9. The phone isn’t planned to be coming to North American, European, or Middle Eastern markets, but it’s interesting nonetheless to take a look at what HTC’s international smartphone strategy looks like.

The device sounds a lot like the Chinese-only HTC One M9+ in terms of specifications (including a fingerprint scanner), but it notably does without to Duo Camera set up and goes with a polycarbonate back rather than aluminum. The device has an octo-core MediaTek processor, 3 GB of RAM, a 5.2-inch display, and a 2,900 mAh battery.

Upleaks says that the device is going to ship in three colors: rose gold, gold sepia, and meteor gray. Three launch markets, India, Hong Kong SAR, and Taiwan are confirmed to be getting the device at some point. It’s expected to launch at around $550 dollars, and will purportedly hit the market sometime in July.

HTC has ‘no plan’ for a mini variant of its One M9 flagship

Site default logo image

According to a recent report from the Taiwanese media, HTC is said to be leaving behind the “mini” variant of its HTC One lineup this time around, due to a market shift toward larger-screened devices. A”mini” version of the HTC One M9 was naturally expected due to the existence of the HTC One mini and its successor, the HTC One mini 2 (which were miniature variants of the HTC One M7 and One M8, respectively)…

HTC has today brought to the world (or just Japan, actually) the announcement of its HTC J Butterfly flagship, likely to come to other parts of the world under the Butterfly 3 moniker. The phone is a colorful new handset with a waterproof plastic build, packs some very powerful internals, and even brings with it some features that HTC left behind for its One M9 flagship…
