Samsung may soon bring us a Batman-themed Galaxy S7 edge

Partnerships between Samsung and comic book franchises are everything but new. Last year, on the occasion of the launch of the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, the Korean giant teamed up with Marvel to bring a special edition, Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 edge, as well as a custom Gear VR experience.

The smartphone titan is now switching sides, however, and a collaboration with DC Comics may soon bring us a fancy new Galaxy S7 edge

Samsung earlier this week officially introduced an Iron Man edition Galaxy S6 Edge, but also noted that it would be available only in South Korea, Hong Kong, and China, leaving fans everywhere else out to dry. Nevertheless, popular accessory company SlickWraps has introduced an aftermarket skin/wrap that gives any Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge the Iron Man design.

It’s real: Samsung starts teasing Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 Edge

Artist’s rendition of what the phone might look like

Korean media reported earlier this month that Samsung was working on a new Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 in partnership with Marvel, and now that smartphone’s existence has been confirmed by Samsung itself. The South Korean company has taken to Twitter to show off what appears to be the packaging for the device, sporting a galactic background and labeled “Coming Soon”.

We don’t know what “Coming Soon” means exactly, but Samsung says that “detailed availability in markets may differ by region.” It’s also not clear at this point exactly which regions the phone might be coming to, but it’s assumable that the South Korean and United States markets are at least two of the targeted locales considering the popularity of The Avengers: Age of Ultron…

Samsung reportedly launching ‘Iron Man’ Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge variants

According to a report this morning from the Korea Times, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are about to get an Avengers makeover. In partnership with Marvel, the Korean company supposedly said that it will release “Iron Man versions” of its two flagships, assumably to help promote (as if it needed help being promoted) the recently-released Avengers: Age of Ultron film…

With the North American release of the new Avengers: Age of Ultron movie hitting theaters tomorrow, Korean developer Netmarble has perfectly timed the release of its anticipated “Marvel Future Fight” action RPG for Android.

Available on the App Store now for free, the game features 36 officially licensed Marvel characters, including The Avengers, Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Loki, Doctor Octopus and Ultron.

The game includes a single player campaign, 3 vs. 3 battles, one-finger gesture control or a virtual gamepad, and a familiar RPG leveling system.

With a storyline penned by best-selling Marvel comics writer Peter David, players can experience the world of Marvel firsthand across four action-packed modes. In addition to the PVE Mission Mode, Marvel Future Fight also includes a PVP three-on-three Timeline Battle that will see teams of players fighting heroes from other dimensions. For players looking to take it to the next level, the Villain Siege mode taps on players’ knowledge of the Marvel Universe to uncover evil plots of the most infamous villains, while Dimension Rift Missions will offer a true test of skill for players seeking the ultimate challenge.

To celebrate the launch of the title, Netmarble and Marvel are offering players the ability to unlock Iron Man armor as an in-game item during the first week.

Marvel Future Fight is available for free on Google Play now.

HTC looks to introduce low-cost handsets, slash costs in hope of finding profit

Poor HTC, they just can’t catch a financial break as the company warned its fourth quarter revenue will fall up to 15 percent below analyst estimates. The company briefed investors earlier today as it struggles to increase its estimated 2.6 percent of the global smartphone market.

HTC says they will look at releasing a broader product line, including more low-cost handsets as it aims for higher profitability into next year. “We’re looking at broader products in this quarter…we aim for higher volume into 2014 that will give better profitability,” company financial chief Chialin Chang said in the briefing, referring to more affordable smartphones. That move would be a sharp turnaround from HTC’s previous strategy of attempting to capture 20 percent of the high-end smartphone market in China.

Let’s be honest about HTC’s future and say that among other problems are marketing misfires that have cost the company mindshare. “Perhaps in the past we have not marketed ourselves that well,” Ben Ho, HTC’s chief of marketing, told Reuters in an October interview.

Is there anyone who ran out to purchase a HTC device based on the fact that Robert Downey Jr was peddling their products? I mean a tinfoil catamaran doesn’t exactly strike me as a winning formula for increasing sales. Ho would not rule out an increase to the marketing budget however, currently set around $1 billion. “We are in the process of tightening up and revamping a lot of things that we used to do.”

Unfortunately with the fourth quarter not looking to make things any better, HTC will need to explore more than just low-cost handset sales to try to win back the hearts and minds of customers flocking to Samsung products in droves. I’m not quite sure Iron Man is up to the challenge.

Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. reportedly inks $12 million marketing deal with HTC

It’s no secret that HTC does not have the marketing budget of a company like Apple or Samsung, but according to a report, it has inked a deal that will greatly increase its commercial marketing presence. HTC is prepping a substantial two-year marketing campaign with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr, according to two sources speaking with Bloomberg.  The deal is reportedly worth $12 million and will include television spots, as well as print and billboard advertisements. Downey will have a say in all decisions and maintain a level of creative control.

The campaign will feature Downey as himself, not any of the characters he has portrayed in films.

Downey will feature in the campaign as himself, not the characters he plays in movies including Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, and will have final say over creative elements, the people said, declining to be named because the talks aren’t public. The maker of the slim, metal HTC One handset will likely feature Downey in television, print and billboard ads, they said.
