Meet ‘xodiom,’ an affordable OnePlus One competitor

It appears as if having just one super-powerful and super-low-priced flagship Android phone wasn’t enough, because a company called “xodiom” has just popped up out of thin air (via PhoneArena) and launched a Snapdragon 805-powered budget smartphone with decked out specs. And while the entry price doesn’t quite dip as low as that of the 16 GB OnePlus, it appears that this phone might be a worthy contender.

OnePlus apologizes for pre-order problems, will offer another chance to order on November 17

Site default logo image

After months and months of inconsistent availability and controversial marketing techniques, the OnePlus One finally went up for official pre-order yesterday. As you’d expect however, the launch did not go as planned. The Chinese company’s site experienced a massive hit in traffic, causing it to be nearly impossible for customers to process an order, and even harder to tell if that order had actually gone through. This evening, OnePlus has published an apologetic blog post, explaining what exactly went wrong yesterday.

PSA: OnePlus One pre-orders start today at 8AM PST for one hour only

If you’ve been continuously trying to score an invite to purchase a OnePlus One, only to come up short, today might be your lucky day. In less than an hour (at 8AM PST), the Chinese phone maker will open up pre-orders for its elusive handset for exactly 60 minutes. While that may not be a lot of time to buy a device that’s been around for several months now, it’s still the closest thing to a normal purchase option that the startup has offered since launching its first smartphone.

No invite necessary for OnePlus One’s sit test

Site default logo image

Following Samsung’s display of its ‘Gluteus Maximus’ resilience, the OnePlus team have joined in to show how durable the OnePlus One is. Just like any other test facility, you see tests of drops, bends, sits, impact, tumble and weather. Unsurprisingly, the video shows the phones withstanding all of these conditions, including ten minutes of rain.

At OnePlus we believe that high quality shouldn’t come with a high price tag. Today our team made a special trip to our factory to film and put together this insider’s look at how our smartphones ace their quality control tests.

In addition to confirming plans for a new smartphone, Pei said that OnePlus is entertaining requests for a smaller device, but he didn’t get into details.

In case you haven’t heard of them, OnePlus is a company that sells the OnePlus One smartphone (our review here), which boasts a 5.5″ 1080P display, 2.5GHz SnapDragon 801, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of on-board storage, and other top-tier features for the low-range price of $349 off contract. Their “invite only” system spawned a polarizing response from their most dedicated fans, as OnePlus required anyone who wanted the phone to be “invited” to purchase it.

OnePlus One review: A true flagship killer that’s second to none (Video)

There’s nothing worse than wanting something you can’t have. Unfortunately, that happens to be the case for the best Android smartphone on the market. Of course, “best” is completely subjective, but there are a lot of factors that make the OnePlus One my go-to Android smartphone and 2014’s “flagship killer.” It may not have everything for everyone, but it has everything I need and all for half the price of the current competition.

When the OnePlus One was introduced, it dropped jaws within the Android community. It’s powered by the latest and greatest specifications on the market and priced at just $299 for the 16GB model and $349 for the 64GB model. The catch is, you’ll need an invitation to buy it. Yup, that’s right an invitation, but we’ll talk about that more in a little bit…

OnePlus teases StyleSwap wood back covers, more info coming July 22

Custom back covers for the OnePlus One aren’t a new concept. The “Design” page on the OnePlus website has touted a selection of “StyleSwap” exchangeable back covers as “Coming Soon” for quite some time. However, a new tweet via the official OnePlus Twitter account teases these new accessories a bit, giving a date of July 22nd for the reveal of additional information about the covers.

We’ve done a hands-on of the device, giving you a look at the coveted flagship smartphone that seemingly nobody can really get for themselves. In response to the above tweet, many people are getting increasingly frustrated because a bit more information about the StyleSwap accessories does no good if hardly anyone actually has the device. Hopefully the phone will move beyond its invite-only availability soon.

OnePlus reportedly working on a tablet while most are still waiting for its smartphone (Update)

Let’s face it, the launch of the OnePlus One has pretty much been a disaster. There’s been horrible marketing gimmickssoftware issues and let’s not forget that you still can’t buy the phone without an invitation. Hopefully OnePlus will resolve the issues surrounding its smartphone before publicly announcing any other projects, because according to @evleaks, the startup is working on a tablet.

OnePlus now accepting donations in lieu of phone smashing

The OnePlus One looks like a promising device, but its maker’s marketing campaign is more than questionable. Let’s face it, OnePlus’ Smash the Past promotion was a terrible idea. It’s bad for the environment, wastes good phones and worst of all it may be a financial loss for its winners. However, it appears that OnePlus has come to its senses. Today, the Oppo Electronics subsidiary announced that it will now give participants the option to smash or donate their phone to Medic Mobile if they’re selected to receive one of the first 100 OnePlus Ones.

So far the OnePlus One has received a positive buzz, but the biggest controversy surrounding the “flagship killer” is its awful marketing program. Why smash a $700 device for a $300 phone? If you’re not familiar with what this $300 device has to offer, check out its specs below.

  • 5.5-inch LTPS IPS with TOL 1080p display
  •  2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 3,100mAh battery
  • 5-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 13-megapixel rear-facing camera
  • Android 4.4 KitKat (CyanogenMod 11S)
