Verizon Moto X for 1¢ on-contract + $100 bill credit this week only, $329 unlocked

Moto-X-discount-Verizon

If you happened to miss out on that recent Valentine’s Day sale from Motorola, the company announced on Twitter that it’s offering the Moto X for 1 cent on contract through Verizon or $70 off unlocked. That means you can pick up the 16GB Moto X customized through Moto Maker starting at $329 off contract. The penny deal will require you to sign up to a two-year contract through Verizon, and an additional $50 on either of the deals will bump you up from the 16GB to the 32GB model.

An even better deal is available through Amazon, however, with an additional $100 bill credit for those activating a new Verizon line on-contract. You might also be able to take advantage of that bill credit through Moto Maker for devices activated on Verizon, but there’s no mention of the offer on the site.

After months and months of rumors regarding the HTC One follow-up codenamed M8, HTC today sent out invites to an event scheduled for March 25th where the company is expected to officially unveil the device. While HTC hasn’t come right out and said the event is specifically for the M8, it will be showing off its new flagship devices for 2014. That means we likely won’t be seeing much from HTC during Mobile World Congress next week in Barcelona, but we’ll keep you updated on the latest.

Leak shows first Asus Chromebooks coming soon w/ C200 & C300 models

Site default logo image

According to new reports pointing to what look like internal strategic documents, Asus appears to be preparing to launch its first Chromebook products in the near future. VR-Zone posted an image (via GigaOM) showing two Chromebook models, the C200 and C300, mentioned in a document titled “ASUS NB Strategy.”

We’ve seen Chromebooks from Acer, Samsung, HP, and more recently Toshiba, but one of Google’s closest OEM partners, Asus, has yet to release one. It’s not that surprising that it plans to, however, as it is already making a Chrome OS device soon to hit the market. Earlier this month the company announced the smallest-ever Chromebox set to go on sale next month starting at $179.

There aren’t any details about when we might be seeing the Chromebooks from Asus or specs for the two models, but of course there is speculation the company could make a hybrid tablet/Chromebook like line of Transformer products.

No word on an official release date, but Rovio says the game will ship sometime in the fall.

A behind the scenes look at building a Google Maps satellite

Google-Earth-satellite

An interesting story from the BBC goes behind the scenes with the satellites that are used to take imagery of earth that eventually land in Google Maps and Google Earth.

Behind a long rectangular window, in a high white room tended by ghostly figures in masks and hats, a new satellite is taking shape. Once in orbit later this year, WorldView-3 will be one of the most powerful Earth observation satellites ever sent into space by a private company. Spinning around the planet some 600 kilometres (370 miles) above us, it will cover every part of the Earth’s surface every couple of days.

Google gets the majority of its imagery from DigitalGlobe and Ball Aerospace is currently constructing new satellites for the company, as highlighted in the BBC report. The new WorldView-3 satellite will be capable of capturing objects 25cm (10 inches) across, but the report notes Google and customers other than the government only get access to “images with a resolution of 50cm (20 inches).” It’s likely much of the updated imagery you see on Google Maps and Earth over the next year will come from the new satellite once in orbit. The whole article is worth a read if you’re interested in learning more about how the satellites are built and capture imagery once in space.

LG teaser image confirms February 24 unveiling for LG G2 Mini

LG-G2-Mini

There have been a lot of rumors in recent weeks about an LG G2 mini coming in the near future, and today what appears to be an official teaser image from LG confirmed the device will finally get official on February 24. The image (above) was posted to the company’s Facebook page with only the tagline “Experience the MINI. Mobile World Congress” and the Feb. 24 date mentioned above. It’s clear a mini version of LG’s flagship G2 is on the way, but we still don’t have any solid details on specs or availability of the device. We still don’t know if the rumors of a 4.7-inch display will pan out (the original G2 has a 5.2-inch display), but we’ll be bringing you all the official details on specs and availability when announced later this month at Mobile World Congress.

Google & VMware bring Windows to enterprise Chromebook users

Site default logo image

windows_8_on_chromebook

Google announced a partnership with virtualization software maker VMware today that will bring Chromebook users access to Windows desktops and apps. The deal means enterprise Chromebook users will have access to Windows apps through VMware Horizon DaaS and an upcoming Chrome Web Store app:

Cloud applications allow flexibility, scalability and security and enable a work-anywhere environment, but many of our customers still use traditional desktop applications. Desktop as a Service (DaaS) helps bridge the gap between the cloud and a traditional desktop by allowing you to run your traditional software in the cloud and have applications appear on your Chromebook similarly to how they run today. An example might be your Windows based accounting application.

It might sound a little bit like Google is admitting that enterprise customers need more than just Chrome apps to get the job done, but it’s also embracing the upcoming end of life for Windows XP and encouraging business customers to upgrade to Chromebooks. Giving businesses access to the Windows apps many rely on is certainly a good argument for upgrading to Chromebooks. In a statement in VMware’s press release, Google’s president of enterprise Amit Singh said “Chromebooks can save businesses about $5,000 per computer when compared to traditional PCs.”

The LG G2 comes out on top at 75.7% display compared to 60% and below for the current lineup of iPhones. If the rumors are true, we could start to see manufacturers try to increase screen real estate by eliminating even more of the bezel

Google’s $3.2 billion purchase of Nest cleared by FTC

Site default logo image
Photo: websummit.net

Photo: websummit.net

After announcing that it had acquired smart thermostat maker Nest for $3.2 billion in cash last month, Google’s purchase was of course still subject to the normal regulatory approvals. Today the deal has finally been made official with the FTC granting approval of the acquisition through an “early termination” of the commission’s review of the purchase. It looks like the FTC has no concerns over the deal violating antitrust laws so pending any other regulatory body jumping in before the 30-day waiting period is up, Google shouldn’t have any issues closing the deal.

Google had already invested in the company through its Google Ventures arm, but the purchase means Nest will officially become a part of Google. In its original statement announcing the acquisition, Google noted that Nest will continue “its own distinct brand identity” and that founder Tony Fadell will continue to run the company.

Google disrupts the videoconferencing market with $1000 Chromebox for Meetings

Site default logo image

chrome_meetings

Google announced today that ASUS is releasing a new “Chromebox for meetings” that comes bundled with a camera, microphone, and speaker as an all-in-one meeting room solution for using Google+ Hangouts and accessing Google Apps:

Chromebox for meetings comes with a blazing-fast Intel Core i7-based Chromebox, a high-definition camera, a combined microphone and speaker unit and a remote control. Set up your entire room in minutes and easily manage all meeting rooms from a web-based management console. All you need is the display in your room, and you’re good to go.

Walk into the room, click the remote once and you’re instantly in the meeting. No more complex dial-in codes, passcodes or leader PINs. Share your laptop screen wirelessly, no need for any cords and adaptors. Integration with Google Apps makes it easy to invite others and add rooms to video meetings, directly from Google Calendar.

Google says the new Chromebox for meetings will allow businesses to outfit 10 or more rooms “for the same price that companies have typically paid for one meeting room.”

The new Chromebox for meetings from ASUS (pictured above) is available in the U.S. starting today for $999 and other Chromebox for meetings products from HP and Dell will be released in the months to come. It’s also planning to launch the products in other countries later this year including Australia, Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the U.K. Some of Google’s partners are also releasing new tools to make it easy for existing meeting room solutions to access Google+ Hangouts.

Google Wallet iOS app gets loyalty card scanning, notifications for nearby merchants

Google-WalletAfter rolling out the update to Android devices last week, Google today updated its Google Wallet app for iOS with the ability to scan physical loyalty cards. Rather than having to type out your account information to join a new program within the app, scanning a physical loyalty card from a supported retailer will auto-populate your info and automate the process.

The updated app also now includes new notifications for nearby retailers related to loyalty programs you’ve joined. If you’ve joined the Walgreens program, for example, you’ll get notifications reminding you “to shop and earn rewards” when close to a brick and mortar retail location.

The updated Google Wallet iOS app is available on the App Store now.

Google announces Q4 earnings: $16.86B revenue, $12.01 EPS, $3.38B net income

Site default logo image

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiUERHMWrWE]

Google has just announced the fourth quarter earnings result for the holiday quarter announcing consolidated revenues of $16.86 billion, up 17% since the year ago quarter, earnings per share of $12.01, and net income of $3.38 billion. That compares to analyst estimates that averaged somewhere around $16.75 billion revenue and $12.26 earnings per share.

“We ended 2013 with another great quarter of momentum and growth.  Google’s standalone revenue was up 22% year on year, at $15.7 billion”, said Larry Page, CEO of Google.  “We made great progress across a wide range of product improvements and business goals.  I’m also very excited about improving people’s lives even more with continued hard work on our user experiences.”

Following yesterday’s news that Lenovo would be purchasing Google’s Motorola handset business (minus some patents and the Advanced Technology and Projects group), the biggest question leading up to today’s earnings call is losses related to Motorola. Google will presumably address the sale more in its full earnings call later today, but it did report a loss of $384 million for Motorola Mobile during the quarter:

Now adding your loyalty cards is even easier. Just scan the card with the camera in your device, and you’re done! Your loyalty program info will auto-populate, so you can add more and type less.

Google is also including new notifications tied to the loyalty programs that it says will remind you “to shop and earn rewards” when in the proximity of a store for one of the programs you’ve joined.

The update doesn’t appear to have hit Google Play just yet, but should land sometime this week for devices running Android 4.0+.

Google-Apache Cordova-Chrome

After letting us know last month that it was getting ready to release a toolkit to let developers easily bring their Chrome web apps to iOS and Android, today Google released a developer preview of the tool. In its blog post, Google explains the tool is based on open-source framework Apache Cordova, which allows devs to build native apps for iOS and Android using CSS, HTML, and Javascript. It’s also making a lot of its own core Chrome APIs available to developers through the preview. It essentially means devs will be able to bring their Chrome web apps to the App Store and Google Play, but it will also let them build new cross platform apps in CSS, HTML, and Javascript. Google explained how it works:
