The S6 Active is the rugged version of Samsung’s 2015 flagship, and features a larger 3,500mAh onboard battery (compared to the measly 2,800 mAh of its standard brethren), as well as Quick Charge and Ultra Power Saving functionality.
The Galaxy S6 Active has an IP68 rating and is certified to meet military standards for water and dust resistance, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, humidity, and high altitude. It comes in Blue Camo, White Camo, or Gray and as expected has a 5.1″ QHD Super AMOLED display and 16MP rear and 5MP front-facing cameras.
AT&T is today beginning its rollout of Android 6.0 Marshmallow to the Galaxy S6 active. The phone is the latest to receive the latest version of Google’s mobile OS, which was first announced in the summer of 2015…
Having been on the market for a month, the analysts over at Counterpoint Technology Market Research crunched some numbers, and found that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are outselling their predecessors fairly comfortably, despite the increasingly harsh competitive market.
With the latest version of Android, version 6.0 Marshmallow, reportedly scheduled to start arriving for Samsung devices at the end of the year and into next, today we get a look at changes to Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay coming in the update via XDA-Developers.
Among the changes are tweaks to the user interface (most noticeably in the notifications panel) with a new color palette that the report notes is now “ predominantly white, with the same green accents” as the previous design, as pictured above on a Note 5.
There are touches of Material design throughout, new animations, and cleaned-up menus, while some of the stock TouchWiz apps also get a fresh coat of paint. Here’s a quick look at few: Expand Expanding Close
If you’ve been following our thoughts on this year’s flagship smartphones, you know that we think that Samsung’s offerings are some of the best. The Korean company really stepped up their game with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, introducing a much more premium build, a cleaned up version of TouchWiz, and internals that are worthy of 2015. In that vein, the Galaxy S6 Active is pretty much identical. It has a really nice hard plastic body, the same less-horrible TouchWiz, and the exact same internal specifications as its standard S6 brethren. But it’s not perfect, and there are always going to be compromises. Maybe fewer compromises than ever before, but compromises nonetheless… Expand Expanding Close
The Galaxy S6 Active was made official by AT&T earlier this week following several leaks, and now the company has made the much-anticipated rugged S6 variant available on its online store… Expand Expanding Close
We’ve had quite a few leaks of the device already, and now AT&T has officially unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active on its website. We’re still waiting for the customary blog post to go up with information on pricing and availability, though, so we’ll update this post when those details goes live.
Update: The press release has just gone out with everything we really want to know about the Galaxy S6 Active. In terms of details we didn’t know about, the phone runs 5.0.2 Lollipop, comes with an Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core processor, 32GB of internal storage, and the 5.1″ QHD Super AMOLED display has a pixel density of 577 ppi. The S6 Active will be available starting June 12th, as always, as an AT&T exclusive and will be available on the same day both online and in retail stores. Installment pricing with be as such: $0 down on AT&T Next for $23.17 with 30 device payments on Next 24, $28.96 per month at 24 payments on Next 18, or $34.75 per month at 20 payments on Next 12.
“With the Galaxy S6 active, we’re delivering consumers with high durability coupled with the powerful performance of Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone,” said Tim Baxter, President & COO & Mobile Division GM of Samsung Electronics America. “The result is a smartphone that brings ruggedized capabilities and water resistance coupled with the camera, battery and design features that empower our consumers and business users to do more.”
The promotional page for the S6 Active confirms just about every detail we already knew about the rugged device save for battery size – the S6 Active indeed does have a 3,500mAh onboard battery (contrary to belief it might stay at 2,800mAh), as well as Quick Charge and Ultra Power Saving functionality, that together should stretch out use off a cable by quite some time.
The company has a promotional video for the phone up on its YouTube account:
We’re quickly nearing the point when we’ve covered more leaks of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active – a ruggedized variant of the flagship Galaxy S6 – than we can count on two hands, so it only makes sense to keep the coverage coming. Today’s bit of news isn’t a leak, however, but rather a tweet from AT&T hinting at an imminent launch of the device.
At this point we have to believe that Samsung just doesn’t care very much about keeping the Galaxy S6 Active – a ruggedized variant of the flagship Galaxy S6 – a secret, as information about the device has leakedmultipletimes already starting early last month. Today we get what is essentially a complete rundown of the device in the form of its user manual, courtesy of none other than Samsung US.
The manual, clocking in at 108 pages, includes everything from information on Samsung’s custom interface on top of Lollipop to how to install the SIM card and customize the function of the “Active” key found on the side of the device.
Since this manual is coming straight from the dragon’s mouth, we feel it safe to consider all the details within official and confirmed, so let’s go through the top-line specifications. The S6 Active has a 5.1″ 2560 x 1440 Quad HD Super AMOLED display, an Exynos 7420 octa-core processor, 32GB of non-upgradable internal storage, 16MP rear and 5MP front-facing cameras, and unlike previous rumors suggested, the battery is staying the same as the S6 at 2,550mAh. All of these internal specs are pretty much the same as the standard Galaxy S6, actually.
Aside from that it lacks, as we expected, a fingerprint sensor or touch-sensitive buttons in favor of rugged hardware keys, but preserves the heart rate sensor and interestingly weighs just as much as its standard counterpart. The manual shows off the S6 Active in both Camo White and Titanium Black paintjobs, though we still expect there to be a green camouflage variant as was the case with its predecessor, the S5 Active.
With this phone having already been submitted for FCC approval, which typically happens when a device’s specifications and hardware design are set in stone, and considering the launch of its predecessor in June of last year, we should be seeing this device officially confirmed by Samsung pretty soon.
The Galaxy S6 Active has been leaked several times already, but now the well-connected Evleaks has posted another press render of the device. The first press render shared last month showed the device with a camouflage backing that, while lending credit to the rugged nature of the device, didn’t exactly come across as the most well designed look for a smartphone.
Another day, another Samsung Galaxy S6 Active leak. This time courteous of, well, Samsung itself. The device is listed in a table on the page for the company’s Samsung Plus benefits program.
The company seemingly hasn’t placed much effort into keeping this one under lock and key as we’ve already reported on severaldifferentleaks of the S6 Active over the past two days alone. The device is expected to be, like the S5 Active, a ruggedized variant of the flagship Galaxy S6 with similar internals and neither a fingerprint sensor nor capacitive touch back and mulitasking menu buttons, in favor of more rugged ones. This evening’s mistake on Samsung’s part all but confirms the Galaxy S6 Active should be arriving soon.
The Galaxy S6 was announced with nary a mention of a variant besides the famed Edge model, but a new leak surfaced yesterday showing what appeared to be spy shots of a previously unheard-of Active variant of Samsung’s latest flagship. While those shots might have looked a bit sketchy, another leak posted today by renowned leakster Evleaks corroborates the existence of the device we saw yesterday…
The model number SM-G890A was originally leaked by @upleaks and is highly suspected to be that of the Galaxy S6 Active, as AT&T’s Galaxy S5 Active had a model number of SM-G870A, and because @upleaks has a strong track record in the hardware-leaks department.
Samsung has offered a ruggedized variant to its flagship line of smartphones for several years now, and it looks like that will continue. Expand Expanding Close
An anonymous source today sent two images to GSMArena showing off what is allegedly the unannounced Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. From surface level inspection it looks plausible that this is a legitimate leak. Samsung went with a different typeface and branding for the Galaxy S6 line, and comparing the lettering and font of the words to that of the S6 it looks like this phone is at least similar to the main flagship in that regard.
