Google employees discuss Larry Page’s ‘Kennedy’ initiative to redesign, beautify apps [Video]

Site default logo image

It’s hard to ignore the beautification of Google’s core mobile and desktop apps that has taken place over the last two years. Not only has Google brought a slick, cohesive design scheme to its suite of desktop services, it has also been getting praise for the redesign of its mobile apps on both Android and iOS. Today, The Verge posted an in-depth look at exactly how Google and CEO Larry Page have been able to make that happen. After taking over as CEO in 2011, Page issued a mandate to redesign all the company’s core products. The result was a Google-wide design initiative dubbed “Project Kennedy” that included redesigns of many core app just 3 months after Page took over:

At the end of June 2011, just under three months after Page took over as CEO, Google shipped fresh new versions of Google Search, Google Maps, and Gmail, and Calendar. In the next year and a half, Google moved swiftly, launching Google Now, a fresh mobile take on Kennedy ideals, and a host of stunning new iOS apps like Google+, YouTube Capture, Chrome, and Maps that followed much of the original vision, albeit with some variations between the different product teams

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 8.0 spotted in the wild?

Site default logo image

The images above come from an Italian blog—dday.it— claiming to have acquired spy shots of Samsung’s much talked about 8-inch Galaxy Note. We heard a lot about the device in recent weeks, and Samsung executive JK Shin apparently confirmed earlier this month that the new Galaxy Note would launch at Mobile World Congress in February.

We got a look at alleged specs for the device via SamMobile last month, and they included a 1,280-by-800 TFT LCD, a 1.6 quad-core processor, 5-megapixel main camera, and 2GB of RAM. Today, we get our first look at what might be the actual design of the device, which not surprisingly is essentially just a larger version of the Note II. What is surprising is that Samsung has apparently included traditional hardware buttons instead of onscreen controls. There is a possibility we are looking at an early design, or something other than the Note 8.0, but we’ll have to wait until MWC next month to be sure.

Court docs reveal email exchange between Eric Schmidt and Steve Jobs over poaching employees

Earlier this month, a U.S. District Judge in California ordered Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and others to give depositions in an ongoing private lawsuit. Employees brought on the private lawsuit alleging  “no-poach” agreements the companies entered would drive down wages. Today, new details have emerged after a request to keep court documents secrets was denied by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh.

While emails exchanged between Steve Jobs and former Palm CEO Ed Colligan have been the focus on the documents, The Verge also pointed us to emails exchange between Jobs and Google execs. Below we have an email form Jobs to Schmidt asking to put a stop to Google recruiting employees from its iPod team, as well as one where Schmidt discussed not wanting to create a paper trail:

Google CEO hints about upcoming Motorola phone features

Site default logo image

Larry Page

Google CEO Larry Page just wrapped up his opening comments during the company’s Q4 2013 earnings call taking place right now. While noting that “managing our supply better” is a priority (see Nexus 4 supply constraints), Page also hinted at some possible upcoming Motorola smartphone features. Page said Motorola is working on the following two areas: better batteries and impact-resistant designs.

I am excited about the business. In today’s multi screen world, the opportunities are endless.  Think about your device.  Battery life is a huge issue.  You shouldn’t have to worry about constantly recharging your phone.  When you drop your phone, it shouldn’t go splat.  Everything should be a ton faster and easier.  There’s real potential to invent new and better experiences.

Page also said Motorola’s new CEO, Dennis Woodside, has a built a “world-class team” that is currently exploring these new opportunities:

Samsung ‘fast follower’ mantra extends to marketing as well

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=nf5-Prx19ZM]

A story today from Fortune writer Michal Lev-Ram titled “Samsung’s road to global domination” tells an interesting anecdote about the company’s ad team on iPhone 5 launch day. The team, led by chief marketing officer Todd Pendleton with help from ad agency 72andSunny, sat in a Los Angeles restaurant following real-time updates from Tim Cook’s iPhone 5 unveiling.

Two hours later the team had crafted the now well-known ad campaign mocking iPhone line sitters:

They huddled around tables mounted with laptops and TV screens, carefully tracking each new feature and monitoring the gush of online comments on the new device via blogs and social media sites. As the data flowed in, writers from the company’s advertising agency, who were also camped out in the restaurant turned war room, scrambled to craft a response…

Two hours later, when Cook stepped off the stage, the Samsung group was already drafting a series of print, digital, and TV ads. The following week — as the iPhone 5 went on sale — the company aired a TV ad mocking Apple “fanboys” queuing up for the new phone. (“The headphone jack is going to be on the bottom!”) The 90-second commercial went on to become the most popular tech ad of 2012, garnering more than 70 million views online. More important, in the weeks following the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5, Samsung sold a record-breaking number of its own signature smartphone, the Galaxy S III.

SAMSUNG ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF GALAXY S III MINI WITH NFC
New NFC variant set to hit shops at end of January

21st January 2013, London, UK – Samsung Mobile UK today announced that an NFC-enabled version of the Galaxy S III Mini smartphone will be available to buy in the UK from the end of January.

Owners of the new Galaxy S III Mini will be able to share content, such as photos, videos and music, much faster and more easily. Simon Stanford, Vice President, Telecommunications & Networks, Samsung UK and Ireland said:

“NFC technology and the digital wallet started to gain significant traction in 2012, particularly in the run up to the Olympics. It’s an exciting time in the mobile market watching the next phase of its evolution take shape, so we’re happy to announce that we are bringing these new experiences to our customers through our growing number of NFC-enabled devices.”

Earlier today, we posted the full specs of the device courtesy of blog SamMobile. According to the leaked specs, the Galaxy Note 8.0 will include a 1,280-by-800 TFT LCD, a 1.6 quad-core processor, 5-megapixel main camera, and 2GB of RAM. More alleged HTC M7 images & renders leak, show off Sense 5.0

Site default logo image

HTC’s rumored upcoming flagship device, the 4.7-inch ‘M7’, was looking quite iPhone-like in the last set of alleged leaked renders. Today, we get images of the device from a couple of other sources that show HTC might be experimenting with various designs ahead of the product’s launch.

The first set of images, above, come from AndroidPolice, and they show off Sense 5.0 with rearranged home and multitasking buttons. We also get a look at the backside of the device that oddly shows a different Beats audio logo and flash position than the rendered images (below) posted by HTCSource yesterday. It’s of course possible that we’re looking at a prototype of the device in the photos above, and perhaps the renders are closer to what the finished device will look like. Hopefully we actually get eyes on the device next month a Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Report: Samsung working on new ‘Galaxy Tab 3’ lineup & mystery ‘GT-P8200’ tablet

Site default logo image

Galaxy Tab 10.1There have been rumors that Samsung has a new lineup of Galaxy tablets in the works, possibly set to make an appearance next month at Mobile World Congress. Today, SamMobile claimed to have confirmed details of the upcoming Galaxy tabs, citing a “Korean insider,” and provided new information for the Galaxy Tab 3 lineup codenamed “Santos”.

According to the report, Samsung has both 7-inch and 10.1-inch variants of the new lineup in Wi-Fi and 3G configurations. The tablets will also include 5-megapixel cameras, but we don’t get any other details in terms of hardware specs on the four Santos models including GT-P3200, GT-P3210, GT-P5200, and GT-P5210. The report said the tablets are expected to launch in early 2013 in 16GB and 32GB variants.

There was also mention of a Samsung GT-P8200 tablet codenamed “ROMA.” The report didn’t provide many details, but AndroidCentral pointed out the product number isn’t too far off the “GT-P8110” of the Nexus 10.

SamMobile also provided exact specs for the Samsung GT-N5100 Galaxy Note 8.0 it first posted about last week. The full specs for that device, expected to pop up during MWC next month, are below:

Report: LG takes 2nd place from Apple in US handset market during December

LG-Optimus-GThe iPhone may have recently captured a record 53 percent of the U.S. smartphone market. However, when it comes to its steady second place position in the U.S. handset market (smartphones and feature phones combined), a new report claimed LG bumped Apple to third position during December on strong sales of its Optimus G.

Yonhap News covered the report from Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research, which said on Sunday that LG captured 13 percent of the U.S. market last month, bumping Apple to third place for the first time since the launch of the iPhone 4S. Apple recorded 12 percent of the market, which puts both Apple and LG well behind leader Samsung at 33 percent. LG recently announced sales of 1 million units for the Optimus G worldwide, but it’s unclear if the LG-made Nexus 4 from Google was a significant contributor to the company’s rise during December.

LG Electronics had maintained the runner-up position until the third-quarter of 2011 but fell to third place after Apple’s iPhone 4S hit the market… Market insiders attributed LG Electronics’ sales growth to the popularity of its latest Optimus G handset, with over 1 million units sold across North America.

Google confirms new UK headquarters coming to 2.4-acre plot at London’s Kings Cross

Reuters reported yesterday that Google purchased a 2.4-acre lot at London’s King Cross Central development with plans to build its new United Kingdom headquarters. Reuters has since updated its story with confirmation from Google Vice President for Northern and Central Europe Matt Brittin. According to the report, citing several unnamed sources, Google is spending 650 million to 1 billion pounds and expects to finish development of the site by 2016. It will also move its current U.K. offices to the new site when construction—slated to begin in late 2013—is complete.

“This is a big investment by Google, we’re committing further to the UK – where computing and the web were invented. It’s good news for Google, for London and for the UK,” Google’s Vice President for Northern and Central Europe, Matt Brittin, said in a statement.

Google will move from its current offices in the UK capital’s Victoria and Holborn districts in 2016 when the building completes. Construction on the site will start in late 2013 and the building will range in height from 7 to 11 storeys.

LG’s 5-inch, 1080p ‘Optimus G Pro’ leaks, as LG announces 1M sales of Optimus G

Site default logo image

LG-OptimusG-ProThe image above comes courtesy of Engadget and shows what appears to be some official promo material for the LG’s next Optimus G device, the LG Optimus G Pro. While we don’t get a lot of specs from the image itself, the report passed along rumored specs from BlogofMobile. It claimed the device will sport a 5-inch, 1,920-by-1,080 display, a 3,000-mAh battery, LTE, 32GB of memory, 2GB of RAM, and a 1.7Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064. Other specs mentioned in the report include a 13-megapixel main camera, 2.4-megapixel front-facing camera, and dimensions of 139-by-70-by-10.1mm. It’s a possibility we’ll hear more about the device at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

In related news, Korean news agency Yonhap reported today (via TNW) that the LG Optimus G sold over 1 million units since its launch in September. We’re guessing that doesn’t include the estimated 375,000 units it sold of the Nexus 4, which is essentially the same device.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt ordered to give deposition in anti-poaching lawsuit

From 9to5Mac:

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been ordered by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose to give a deposition related to an ongoing private lawsuit that claims Apple, Google, and others entered “no-poach” agreements, as reported by Bloomberg. Cook isn’t the only executive named in yesterday’s order. Google Chairman Eric Schmidt will also be deposed on Feb. 20, as well as Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini later this month.

The judge said she was disappointed that senior executives at the companies involved hadn’t been deposed before yesterday’s hearing over whether she should certify the case as a group lawsuit. The class would include different categories of employees whose incomes, their lawyers argue, were artificially reduced because of the collusion. Koh didn’t rule on class certification.

At Koh’s request, the lawyers also agreed that Google Chairman Eric Schmidt will be deposed Feb. 20. Lawyers for the employees will depose Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Otellini later this month, lawyers said.

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 12.16.18 PM

Lenovo today announced it would release its first Chrome OS-powered notebook with the introduction of the ThinkPad X131e Chromebook. It doesn’t appear that Lenovo has changed much from its Windows X131e variant, other than the operating system, but the company provided specs, pricing, and availability details (via TheVerge):

The ThinkPad X131e Chromebook simplifies software and security management for school administrators and provides students and teachers with quick access to thousands of apps, education resources and storage. Throughout the course of a typical school day, students’ laptops are often subject to extreme wear and tear. To help school-proof them, the ThinkPad X131e has rugged features including a rubber bumper around the top cover and stronger corners to protect the system in the case of an accidental drop. The hinges and hinge brackets are also strengthened to last more than 50,000 open and close cycles.

As for specs, Lenovo said the four-pound, 11.6-inch device would feature an Intel Celeron processor, three USB ports, low-light webcam, HDMI and VGA ports, a 1,366-by-768 HD LED anti-glare screen, and “battery life for the entire school day.” It also packs a 16 GB Solid State Drive and Dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Ethernet. According to Google, which also made an announcement for the new Chromebook on its Enterprise Blog, battery life is somewhere around 6.5 hours.

Lenovo will make the ThinkPad X131e Chromebook available starting Feb. 26 with volume pricing starting at $429.

HTC’s 4.7-inch ‘M7’ flagship looks very iPhone-like in latest leaked renders

HTC_M7_render

We have heard a lot about HTC’s upcoming M7 smartphone expected to replace the company’s One X line in recent weeks. The rumored 4.7-inch device has some pretty impressive specs, including “several industry firsts,” according to recent reports. However, it certainly doesn’t have an industry-first design, if this new leaked image from UnwiredView is legit, and I think Apple might agree.

The report quoted a “trusted source” and claimed the image above is clipped from “a short animation clip instructing new owners on first-time SIM card installation” for the M7. It’s likely we’ll get our first real look at M7 next month during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Google Apps consultants Cloud Sherpas acquire Innoveer Solutions and Navigis

Cloud Sherpas, last year’s Google Enterprise Partner of the Year, which helped over a million users migrate to Google Apps, today announced it will acquire two companies to accelerate growth: advisory and technology consulting services provider Navigis, and top CRM advisory and cloud integration services firm Innoveer Solutions. The terms of the deals were not disclosed, but CloudSherpas issued the following press releases:

Cloud Sherpas Acquires Innoveer Solutions; Takes Leadership Role in Global CRM Market

Acquisition expands CRM advisory and cloud integration services in the U.S. and adds U.K. and India operations to cloud services brokerage

Atlanta, Georgia – January 15, 2013 – Cloud Sherpas has expanded domestically and internationally with the acquisition of Innoveer Solutions, a top CRM advisory and cloud integration services firm; terms were not disclosed.  The transaction gives Cloud Sherpas its first physical presence in Europe, a growing market for cloud services according to Forrester, and squarely positions Cloud Sherpas as a leader in the cloud services brokerage ecosystem.

Innoveer is an award-winning global CRM consulting firm with over 750 customers and 2,000 successful deployments under its belt.  The company was founded in 1998 and provides a range of services, including discovery and planning, CRM technology selection, business process improvements, implementation, change management and support focused on enterprise businesses in the Life Sciences, Insurance, Financial Services and Manufacturing sectors, among others.  Key customers include Panasonic, Shire Pharmaceuticals and AXA, one of the largest installations of Salesforce worldwide. Innoveer pioneered a CRM Excellence Framework to help clients transform their customer-facing operations, and is well known for its expertise migrating clients from Siebel to Salesforce.  Innoveer also offers in-depth advisory services, focused on CRM planning, process improvement and industry best practices.

Cloud Sherpas’ Salesforce business unit is growing rapidly.  The firm offers CRM advisory services, implementation, integration and custom cloud development. Combined with Innoveer, Cloud Sherpas has migrated more than 5,000 customers to the cloud worldwide.  The acquisition of Innoveer gives Cloud Sherpas greater geographic density in the northeast and central U.S., an operation in the U.K., an offshore delivery team in India and one of the largest practices of certified consultants worldwide. This is Cloud Sherpas’ second CRM-focused acquisition in the past month. Following this acquisition, the firm now has Salesforce.com Platinum Partner status in North America, Europe and Australia.

“Our clients are expanding their cloud application footprint,” said David Northington, CEO at Cloud Sherpas.  “Many of our global customers have experienced success in one area of their business and are eager to apply cloud-based sales automation, customer service, call center support and collaboration throughout their organizations. With the acquisition of Innoveer, we bring more than 500 cloud strategists and technical experts to bear on the market across six countries, including a solid platform for European expansion.”

“We’ve helped hundreds of customers achieve their business objectives with cloud CRM,” said Adam Honig, founder and CEO of Innoveer Solutions. “Our customers are now asking us, ‘what additional value can we get from the cloud?’ As one of the world’s leading cloud services brokerages, Cloud Sherpas is uniquely positioned to help our clients aggregate, integrate and customize an increasingly wide array of cloud-based solutions, including email and collaboration, platform development, mobility solutions, single sign-on and data integration, just to name a few.”

Cloud Sherpas Stakes Leadership Claim to ITSM Market with Navigis AcquisitionPurchase of ServiceNow partner allows Cloud Services Brokerage to better serve customers adopting public cloud for IT service management

Atlanta, Georgia – January 15, 2013 – Cloud Sherpas has acquired Navigis, a leading global provider of advisory and technology consulting services to companies implementing ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW); terms of the deal were not disclosed.  The acquisition allows Cloud Sherpas, which has strong footholds in cloud advisory, messaging, collaboration and CRM, to expand its market and geographic footprints and capitalize on global interest among enterprise organizations in cloud ITSM.

Cloud Sherpas’ customers — now over 5,000 worldwide — are transitioning to cloud solutions from on-premise applications.  These companies recognize the cost and productivity benefits of cloud software and want more of it.  Acquiring Navigis allows Cloud Sherpas to meet this need by offering current as well as prospective customers the leading cloud ITSM solution.  The acquisition also furthers Cloud Sherpas’ mission to provide best-of-breed cloud solutions to the enterprise as a leading Cloud Services Brokerage (CSB).

“Our number one job is listening to customers and providing them with the services they need to grow their businesses,” said David Northington, president and CEO at Cloud Sherpas.  “Many of our customers have expressed an interest in cloud ITSM software, and acquiring Navigis – a strong operation that’s generating good profit and has doubled in size year over year – boosts our ability to support these companies.  Between Google, Salesforce.com and ServiceNow, we’re establishing a ‘Sherpa stack’ of the top cloud solutions.”

Navigis has been a leader in IT Service Management since 1996. The company’s certified ServiceNow consultants provide value-added implementations, custom enhancements, administrative support and training to help ServiceNow customers automate their IT operations.  Navigis clients include a roster of Fortune 500 enterprise IT customers and other leading edge companies.  Navigis founder and CEO Philip Sidebottom will become president of Cloud Sherpas’ ServiceNow business unit with the acquisition.

“We’re thrilled to be joining Cloud Sherpas,” said Sidebottom. “The ITSM space and cloud in general are poised for massive growth. As part of the leading CSB, our customers will benefit greatly from Cloud Sherpas global scale and ability to aggregate multiple best-in-breed cloud applications, implement and integrate those applications, and customize them to meet the unique requirements of an industry or business.”

“Navigis has long been a trusted partner for ServiceNow and has provided considerable value to customers,” said David Schneider, senior vice president of worldwide sales and services, ServiceNow. “We look forward to continued success working with the new organization.”

“In cloud computing, the need for intermediaries to aggregate, integrate or customize cloud services grows as the number of cloud services and the rate of consumer adoption grow,” says Tiffani Bova, Research VP at Gartner in her November 2012 report, Service Provider Primer: Cloud Services Brokerage. “Cloud services brokerages (CSBs), will help organizations adopt and derive more value from multiple cloud services during the next five to 10 years.”

Sony officially unveils its new flagship 5-inch Xperia Z smartphone

Site default logo image

Sony-Xperia-Z-ZL-CES-2013

There has already been a few sightings of Sony’s new Xperia lineup leading up to the company’s official CES press conference taking place at the Las Vegas Convention Center tonight. Sony just officially took the wraps off one of the two devices, confirming previously leaked images and filling us in on some of the final specs.

Both of the devices, the flagship 4G LTE Sony Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL sport a 5-inch, 1080p display and very similar designs, but the ZL repositions the front-facing camera and loses a bit of width on the bezel in the process (as discovered in the leaked images above from Sony). Some of the specs Sony shared for the flagship Z model include NFC, a 13 mega pixel main camera, and a water resistance exterior.

Sony is yet to announce any details for what is presumably the lower-end Xperia ZL, but the press event is ongoing and we’ll update with any additional details.

Phandroid got its hands on full specs for both of the new devices below, which also lists Q1 global rollouts for both models:
