Frontback now available for Android

frontback-screenshot

In what might sound like a throwback to 2009, a popular iOS app just made the jump to Android. After a nine month run on Apple’s mobile platform, Frontback is now available to download from the Play Store. Since you’re probably not familiar with this fairly popular camera app, allow us to bring you up to speed. As suggested by its name, Frontback uses a device’s front and rear-facing cameras to snap two pictures at the same time.

In addition to capturing subjects and selfies, the app lets you add short captions to your photos and share them across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Frontback’s in-house feed. Sure, a similar feature is pre-installed on most Samsung smartphones, but now everyone can join in on the fun.

LG to will partner with TSMC to produce mobile processors

LG-Sign-2

LG will soon try its luck at designing mobile processors in the near future, a company spokesperson recently confirmed. The South Korea-based electronics maker will reportedly contract Taiwan-based TSMC to manufacture its processors. According to The Korea Herald, the company’s in-house chips could possibly show up in LG’s rumored G3 smartphone, which the outfit hopes to announce in the next couple of months.

As for the chip’s build, it’s reportedly based on four 2.2GHz Cortex-A15 cores and four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. By entering the chip making business, LG will further its rivalry with Samsung, which currently produces and manufactures its own Exynos processors line. In addition to LG handsets, the company’s new chips could possibly be used in other third-party devices.

Check out Google’s homemade trackpad tester [Video]

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-09Up5eqI98]

A trackpad’s performance can make or break your experience with a laptop and the folks at Google are well aware of this. Working towards the best user experience, the company’s Chrome OS team has assembled the “Quickstep,” a USB-powered machine that uses a laser to measure trackpad latency in Chromebooks. Whenever a person breaks the laser’s beam with their finger, Quickstep calculates the delay between the trackpad and its input.

While it’s not a fancy space elevator, this piece of tech is definitely making the world a better place.

Google patches Android icon security flaw

Cyber security vendor FireEye recently announced that Google has patched a software flaw that left Android users open to phishing attacks. The firm says that it identified a malicious app that could modify the icons of other Android software applications. The strategy behind this attack, would be to trick an unknowing Android user into clicking a false app icon that would direct them to a phishing website.

These bogus sites would then try to steal their personal information. Some of the permissions attacked by the malware include  “com.android.launcher.permission.READ_SETTINGS” and “com.android.launcher.permission.WRITE_SETTINGS.” These permissions allow an application to reconfigure an Android device’s launcher, including its software icons.

Google is considering giving higher search rankings to websites that use security encryption, according to The Wall Street Journal. If true, this could force more websites to adopt a secure setup, possibly making it harder for cyber criminals to spy on web users. This new idea was recently mentioned at a conference by Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s Webspam team. Still under consideration, if Google decides to move forward with this process, a change reportedly won’t happen for quite a while.
