Samsung will no longer make Android Wear devices, all in with Tizen OS [Update]

samsung-gear-live-android-wear

Update: Samsung has refuted the Fast Company article in a statement: “We disagree with Fast Company’s interpretation. Samsung has not made any announcement concerning Android Wear and we have not changed our commitment to any of our platforms.” In terms of commitment, Samsung has shown little towards Android Wear in the past two years. However, the company likely wants to keep the possibility of making future Wear devices open.

Despite being one of the launch partners for Android Wear in 2014, Samsung will no longer make Android Wear devices. Talking to Fast Company, Samsung says no devices are in the works or being planned. The company will instead focus on using Tizen OS for wearables.

During the I/O Keynote, Google announced that LG’s G Watch and newly announced Samsung Gear Live will be available today on the Play Store. Samsung is preparing to debut its first Android Wear-powered smartwatch next week during Google’s I/O developer conference, according to a new report from Cnet. The company has been working on two different models of the wearable, but there isn’t an word yet which of those versions will be revealed during the event.

Samsung has already tried to jump into the smartwatch market with its various Gear watches. Google first showed off a watch-specific version of Android, dubbed “Android Wear,” earlier this year.

Full comparison: Samsung Gear 2 Neo vs Samsung Gear Fit (video)

newshotOut of the three smartwatches recently released by Samsung, the Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit seem to be questioned the most. Both of these device are priced at $199 and offer similar features, but which one should you buy? Take a look at our full comparison video between these two wearables to find out.

If you’re looking into the Gear 2, you may be surprised to find that the extra $100 will only get you a camera and a slightly different (metal) build quality on the face of the watch. When compared to the Gear 2 Neo, everything else is identical. With that being said, the best options you should consider are the Gear Fit and Gear 2 Neo.

Samsung says Android is still top priority as it plans Tizen smartphones for Q2

samsung-headquarters

While Samsung has confirmed plans to debut phones running Tizen instead of Android,  senior vice president of Samsung’s product strategy team Yoon Han-kil says Android will remain Samsung’s “main business.” The executive also confirmed in the same interview with Reuters that two Tizen smartphones will debut in Q2 with Tizen being used on devices launching only in certain markets:

“We had tried to launch (Tizen) with DoCoMo and Orange … but couldn’t because of poor market conditions. We have changed our strategy and will release the phones in a few countries where we can do well,” he said, adding that he thought Tizen would have to account for up to 15 percent of Samsung’s total smartphone shipments to become a successful platform.

Samsung officially made the switch from an almost all Android ecosystem for its mobile devices to Tizen for its latest round of Gear smartwatches. However, Yoon also confirmed to Reuters that the company plans on releasing an Android smartwatch later in the year, which will presumably be based off Google’s recently unveiled Android Wear platform.

Samsung believes popularizing the Galaxy Gear begins with getting the girl

For a moment there I didn’t think I would find a creepier marketing spot than Nokia’s Lumia 2520 “mullet.” Well, Samsung has gone and taken “creepy marketing spot” to a whole new level with “Are You Geared Up?” The 2.5 minute features two guys, one with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch, the other with just a run-of-the-mill smartphone and of course the bombshell blonde.

Samsung Gear Patent Filing

Samsung Gear Patent Filing

According to a new report from fansite SamMobile, Samsung will introduce its Galaxy Gear smartwatch during the Unpacked Episode 2 event on September 4th. The Galaxy Gear will reportedly carry the SM-V700 model number and act as a companion device for Samsung’s other Galaxy smartphones. Other details are sparse at this point, though several patent filings have given us a hint as to what we may see in terms of design. Samsung is also excepted to announce its Galaxy Note III flagship during the Unpacked event next month.

Samsung’s foray into the smartphone market comes on the heels of the Pebble being available in retail stores across the country. Many people also expect Apple to enter the smartwatch market sometime soon, as well.

No matter what Samsung announces next month, we’ll be sure to bring you all the details.
