Google Hangouts

See All Stories

Hangouts was announced at I/O 2013 and combined the company’s disparate messaging platforms into one unified product. It includes the text elements of Google Talk and Google+ Messenger/Huddle, as well as the video portion of Google+ Hangouts.

Hangouts allows for group conversations with two or more people and can be accessed through Android and iOS apps, as well as the web in Gmail or the dedicated Hangouts site. Users can send images, video, stickers, and location, in addition to having group video calls with multiple people.

Until recently, Hangouts was the default messaging app on Android and handled SMS text messages. However, Google began pushing users to the dedicated Messenger SMS app and is introducing a new messaging app called Allo to replace the messaging parts of Hangouts and Duo for video.

Despite the new apps, Google has noted that Hangouts will remain as the company’s messaging solution for corporate customers.

Google Hangouts now supports free one minute voice calls in 25 countries

Site default logo image

Google recently announced that the first minute of voice calls through Hangouts will be free in 25 different countries. The search giant’s messaging app currently supports video chats and free domestic voice calls, but the company charges a different set of rates when a user places a call abroad. While you can purchase call credit for those longwinded long distance conversations, Google’s new offering is a reasonable option for quick calls or important (but brief) messages.

Google Hangouts for Android updated with Google Voice integration, free VoIP calls

It’s finally all coming together. As many suspected would eventually happen, Google Hangouts is finally—in an update rolling out over the next few days—going to be getting integration with Google Voice. The latter service seemed to definitely be getting neglected by Google as of late, with much of the company’s focus going to its Hangouts platform. But it appears that Voice may even moreso eventually become a thing of the past because, starting today, Google is putting it straight into Hangouts as part of a new update to its apps across Android, iOS, and the web.

Google launches Applause, a Hangouts on Air feature that tracks cheers and jeers in real-time

Site default logo image

Google announced a new feature for Hangouts on Air today called Applause, which lets viewers give a thumbs up or down to the content they’re viewing during a live video broadcast. In addition to sharing cheers and jeers,  this new features lets the search giant generate a real-time chart documenting the audience’s feedback as it happens. Despite looking like a game of Guitar Hero, the colorful graph gives broadcasters an easy way to monitor viewers’ feelings about their efforts. Think of it as a modern-day version of The Gong Show.

Hangouts in Chrome without plugin rolling out to Google Apps users today

After announcing late last month that video calls for its Hangouts service in Chrome no longer require a plugin, Google is today rolling out the change to Google Apps users as well.

The change means that users attempting to make a video call from Hangouts using their Google Apps account will no longer be prompted to install a browser plug-in for Chrome. Now, users will only have to grant permission to their computer’s mic and camera to initiate the call (as pictured above).

Following this update, when users try to start a video call for the first time, they’ll see a message underneath the address bar asking for permission to access their computer’s mic and camera. If they want to change their choice later, they can change it from the address bar in Chrome… We recommend users familiarize themselves with this change before seeing the prompt.

The change first launched in the Canary and Developer builds of Chrome and later to all users in the public, stable release of Chrome, but today arrives for Google Apps users.

A card-like box appears at the top of Google when searching for the name or author of live events.

Google+ Hangouts experiencing outage for some users, Google investigating

In case you were wondering why Hangouts isn’t working this afternoon: Google reports it has been experiencing outages for Google+ Hangouts since earlier today. The company has been providing updates on its app status page but is yet to resolve the issue.

Google says the “the problem affecting a significant subset of users” and that some “will not be able to start new video hangouts.”  The company’s most recent update notes that the issue is ongoing mostly for users in Europe.

We’ll update here once the problem has been resolved.

The first Royal Google Hangout: Princes William and Harry chat live from Buckingham Palace

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Harry became part of Royal history on Wednesday afternoon by hosting the first Google Hangout from Buckingham Palace. According to The Telegraph, the princes appeared live on webcam around 3:35 PM local time to participate in a question and answer session with five young leaders from five Commonwealth countries around the world.

The report claims that, with the help of Google and Twitter, a “state of the art social media hub” has been setup at the Palace to help launch the Queen’s Young Leaders Programme. The princes spoke for twelve minutes with several possible award nominees from Australia, India, Jamaica, South Africa and United Kingdom. Ultimately, there will be 240 people aged 18 to 29 from all 53 Commonwealth countries honored.

The program is also about awarding leaders within the Commonwealth:

“We are looking for the most exceptional leaders from around the Commonwealth, we are looking for this generation’s Nelson Mandela,” said Dr Astrid Bonfield, chief executive of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust. “Who are the people who are going to inspire a whole generation? We want to find in every single Commonwealth country the young people who are already making a difference in their country. The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust was set up by the Commonwealth leaders as a gift to the Queen to thank her for her 60 years’ service, and the fund stands at more than £100 million. Our task is to spend it in a five-year programme to create change across the Commonwealth.”

The princes are searching for nominees using the hashtag #TheSearchIsOn on Twitter.

Google is reportedly shuttering SMS for Hangouts feature in emerging markets (Update)

Site default logo image

Last year, Google added SMS support to Hangouts, along with several other features. However, prior to this, the company also had a similar feature available in emerging markets that let users add their phone numbers to its instant messaging platform. Similar to Google’s defunct Gmail SMS service, this was an alternative for feature phone users and people in regions with limited internet access.

Hangouts for Android updated with custom notification tones for individual contacts

Google updated its Hangouts Android app today with a fresh set of customizable features. Users now have access to a hidden contacts list that lets them hide people from their group without blocking their messages. Google plans to kill Google Voice in coming months, integrate features into Hangouts

Site default logo image

We’ve heard that Google Voice is getting dragged to the trash can and most of its functionality will be incorporated into the G+ Hangouts apps on both Android and iOS. This has already happened to an extent with the ability to phone friends on Hangouts, but we’re hearing the full shuttering and depreciation of the app is the next step.

What’s interesting here is that VoIP-to-phones is expected to be integrated into the Hangouts iOS and Android apps so that, just like with the Web version, you could be able to actually make (and receive) VoIP calls directly from your Google phone number. Whether the carriers and Apple are okay with this isn’t certain, and the thought is that it could be enabled by carrier like Apple’s FaceTime (or could be scrapped altogether) depending on the global market and the carrier.

“Whatsapp was definitely an exciting product,” he said. “We never made an offer to acquire them. Press reports to the contrary are simply untrue.”

The source of the reports that Google attempted to pick up WhatsApp for $10 billion source back to a report by Fortune citing “two separate sources” claiming Google had previously underbid Facebook.
