Sundar Pichai to Tim Cook: Android’s not a toxic hell stew, it’s just a more popular operating system

Site default logo image

Sundar-Pichai-02Bloomberg Businessweek just published a lengthy profile and interview with Google’s head of Android and Chrome Sundar Pichai and within addressed some of Apple’s recent comments about Android. While much of the conversation circled around what we can expect from Google at this year’s developer conference and Sundar’s scheduled keynote address — wearables and TV will be a big focus— Sundar was also asked his thoughts on Apple’s recent announcements at its own WWDC developer conference earlier this month.

While noting that much of what Apple announced for iOS 8 were features that Android already had— third party keyboards, widgets, etc— Sundar said shipping a new version of Google Play every six weeks makes Android allows them to “move the platform faster than anyone else and provide a consistent layer for developers.” Next he addressed Tim Cook’s claim from WWDC that Apple is gaining lots of new customers from Android switchers:

Google Search adds quick links to popular music apps on Android

Site default logo image

A nice new Google Search feature arriving today will provide users with quick links to popular music apps when searching for artists or music related queries. Imagine you search for the name of your favorite artist or a new band you’ve just heard about, your search results will now display links to, for example, Spotify, Rdio, or iHeartRadio.

When you look up musicians and bands on Google, you often want to play their songs right away. Say you’re curious about your favorite pop artist’s latest hits, or you’re with friends chatting about the newest indie rock group and want to play some of their music. Starting today, when you ask Google about a musician, you can simply tap a link to play their music right in one of your installed apps.

The feature is first rolling out to Android devices in the U.S. and will initially support a handful of music apps including Rdio, iHeartRadio, Spotify, Google Play, TuneIn, and YouTube.

Google also noted that it is “working to expand this feature to users worldwide, with their local services like Deezer.”

Researchers find major security flaw in Android apps on Google Play, working with Google to fix

Site default logo image

Google-PlayA recent study presented just yesterday by Columbia Engineering computer science professor Jason Nieh and PhD candidate Nicolas Viennot might be the most comprehensive look yet at the Google Play store and some of the issues plaguing it. The bad news is the researchers were able to discover what they think is a pretty serious security flaw (TheLoop via Phys.org):

Nieh and Viennot discovered all kinds of new information about the content in Google Play, including a critical security problem: developers often store their secret keys in their apps software, similar to usernames/passwords info, and these can be then used by anyone to maliciously steal user data or resources from service providers such as Amazon and Facebook. These vulnerabilities can affect users even if they are not actively running the Android apps. Nieh notes that even “Top Developers,” designated by the Google Play team as the best developers on Google Play, included these vulnerabilities in their apps.

According to the report, Google is working with the researchers to prevent similar problems in the future and has already started the process of informing developers about necessary changes:

Google Maps adds Street View imagery for Greece

Google has done a lot of interesting Street View tours recently, which allow Google Maps users to explore streets, parks, historical locations, monuments, and even the inside of some buildings right from their desktop or mobile device. Today Google is adding its 56th country to Street View with the addition of Greece, a country with more than enough cultural and historical monuments to make for quite an incredible Street View experience to explore. As noted by Google, the introduction of Street View can also greatly improve the experience for tourists, businesses and others traveling through Greece:

From now on unique Greek landmarks, such as the Corfu Old Town, the White Tower in Thessaloniki and the Arch of Hadrian in the center of Athens, will be vividly represented on our computer screens… Many Greeks long have been keen for us to bring its benefits to their country, seeing Street View as a powerful tool for the promotion of a country. At a launch event in Athens, Andreas Andreadis, President of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises, said the new service will prove invaluable to tourists coming to Greece — and Greek businesses serving them. Visitors now will be able to check their hotel in advance and preview places they want to visit. Street View benefits everyone from the wheelchair user who can check whether a building has a ramp to the elderly who may check whether there are sufficient parking spots before leaving home. Minister of Culture and Sports Panos Panagiotopoulos welcomed Street View in Greece as nothing less than “a gift from God.”

You can check out some of the interesting locations Google captured in Greece in its own Views Gallery collection.

Google’s Project Loon balloons delivering 10x more bandwidth, 10x longer flights 1 year after launch

loon-flightpath_6.11v3_Large-1

Google’s Project Loon, which was officially announced last year, has the task of connecting rural, remote, and underserved areas with internet access using high-altitude balloons that circle the globe. Google has been improving the technology since it first launched a pilot with 30 of the balloons last year, and today Wired published an interesting profile on how far along the project has come.

Cassidy pulled up to a rural schoolhouse that had never been able to receive high-quality Internet signals. (Locals sometimes climb trees to try to get a signal for their mobile phones.) The principal, who doubles as the lunchroom cook, ushered him into a classroom filled with middle-school-age kids. Within minutes, one of the balloons he’d launched that morning was overhead, enabling a teacher to get a high-speed connection on his computer. The instructor was able to supplement that day’s lesson about Portugal with Google maps and Wikipedia. Students asked off-the-wall questions—and got answers courtesy of Google. Later when Cassidy spoke to the kids, they shared their goals: One wanted to be an engineer; another, a doctor.

Google has overcome many early challenges with the project, according to Wired’s profile. Perhaps the most important of which is getting the balloons to fly for long periods of time. The company went from fly times of just a few days with the balloons last year to over 100 days today. That’s something experts didn’t expect Google could achieve. Google’s Astro Teller said Project Loon is  “the poster child for Google X… the balloons are delivering 10x more bandwidth, 10x steer-ability, and are staying up 10x as long. That’s the kind of progress that can only happen a few more times until we’re in a problematically good place.”

Google also improved Loon flight times by dramatically upgrading the altitude control system, increasing the vertical range of the balloons so they can catch more favorable winds. (Its balloons “steer” their way around the world by placing themselves in wind currents headed in the right direction.) As a result, it’s not unusual for Google to keep balloons flying for 75 days. One craft, dubbed Ibis 152 (Google uses bird species to nickname its balloons), has been aloft over 100 days and is still flying. An earlier balloon, Ibis 162, circled the globe three times before descending. (It completed one circumnavigation in 22 days, a world record.)

The full piece on Wired is an interesting read.

Amazon integrates Audible audiobooks directly into Kindle mobile apps

Kindle-Android-app-iconAmazon announced today that it’s integrating the Audible audiobook service it purchased back in 2008 directly into the Kindle apps for both iOS and Android. After installing a free update landing today for the apps, users will be able to listen to Audible audio books without ever having to leave the app.

“We continue to hear from a growing number of Whispersync for Voice converts who tell us the innovation has profoundly changed the way they read—in fact, switching back and forth between reading and listening has become their preferred way of experiencing stories,” said Audible founder and CEO Donald Katz. “And the feature has gotten easier and easier to use, as this exciting integration into Kindle apps attests.”

The service is an extension of the Whispersync for Voice feature that Amazon recently launched. That feature allowed users to switch “seamlessly” between reading and listening but required users to have both the Kindle and Audible apps. With the updated Kindle apps, users will be able to get narrations for 45,000 Kindle books and growing as well as purchase Audible upgrades for previously purchased Amazon Kindle books ranging from $1 to $4. The audio and text versions of the book will stay in-sync, pages turn automatically, and narration includes a x2 speed mode and sleep timer option. The best part is that you won’t be pulled out of Kindle and into the Audible app now when switching between text and audio.

The update includes other new features too, including: improvements to the X-Ray reference tool for textbooks and the ability to download an entire collection with a single tap. A full list of new features (via App Store) is below.

The updated Kindle app for Android is available on Google Play now.

What’s New in Version 4.3

Listen to Audible audiobooks! Customers owning both the Kindle and Audible versions of a title can now listen to the audiobook right in the Kindle app.

Now you can use the Kindle app to switch back and forth between reading a Kindle book comfortably at home and listening to the story while driving to work.

Additional Features Include:
•Access to more than 45,000 Kindle/Audible title pairs, including best sellers
• Find audiobooks compatible with items in your Kindle library – audiobooks are delivered by Audible, an Amazon company
• Whispersync for Voice automatically synchronizes reading progress between the Audible and Kindle versions of a book
• Read and listen to a Kindle book at the same time; pages turn automatically
• Narration speeds up to 2x and a sleep timer
• Download an entire collection – gives customers the ability to download an entire collection with the tap of a button, making it easier for readers to download in bulk and load their favorite books on a new iOS device
• Students can now find terms that are in X-Ray for Textbooks by using search – occurrences in X-Ray are shown right above occurrences in the book
• Finding where an X-Ray term occurs on a textbook page is now easier – tap a page thumbnail in the X-Ray feature and you will see the term highlighted in the page of the book
• Performance and stability improvements

Google’s report includes data for a 7-day period ending today, so we’re thinking that the release of KitKat updates for a number of new devices in recent weeks had something to do with the rather significant jump up from last month’s stats.

Google breaks down how much email is encrypted during transit, launches End-to-End encryption tool

Site default logo image

Google wants you to know exactly how much email you send and receive is encrypted during transit, so today it launched a new section in its Transparency Report that does exactly that:

When you mail a letter to your friend, you hope she’ll be the only person who reads it. But a lot could happen to that letter on its way from you to her, and prying eyes might try to take a look. That’s why we send important messages in sealed envelopes, rather than on postcards… Email works in a similar way. Emails that are encrypted as they’re routed from sender to receiver are like sealed envelopes, and less vulnerable to snooping—whether by bad actors or through government surveillance—than postcards.

Google notes that Gmail has always used encryption in transit using Transport Layer Security (TLS), but that doesn’t do much if the email client on the other end isn’t doing the same.  Around 40 to 50 percent of emails between Gmail and others aren’t encrypted, according to Google, and it provided the following chart of what services are using encryption:
