Samsung’s unreleased Galaxy A8 smartphone leaks in new hands-on footage (Video)

Site default logo image

Samsung has yet to officially announce the much-rumored Galaxy A8, but now we know basically anything we might need to know about it (via Nowhereelse). The phone, which is apparently the thinnest that Samsung has ever made, can be seen from every angle in a recently-leaked hands-on video that managed to slip of the hands of Chinese telecom regulator TENAA…

Several new firmware updates now available for Galaxy A7, Galaxy Core Prime, more

Samsung likely has more devices to update than most smartphone manufacturers, and as such, they’re constantly pushing out updates to their never-ending list of handsets. Sometimes these are bigger updates—like a firmware update to Android 5.0 Lollipop—but more often they’re just very minor version bumps to fix bugs and close minor security holes.

SamMobile keeps track of all of these updates to Samsung’s handsets, and their latest list of recent updates includes firmware spanning Android 4.0 all the way to Android 5.0.2. Devices include the Galaxy A7, Galaxy Core Prime, Galaxy Ace 4 LTE, and more. Many of these are updates to devices in international locales, but at least one, the US Cellular Galaxy S6 Edge, is for a United States device.

It’s real: Samsung starts teasing Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 Edge

Artist’s rendition of what the phone might look like

Korean media reported earlier this month that Samsung was working on a new Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 in partnership with Marvel, and now that smartphone’s existence has been confirmed by Samsung itself. The South Korean company has taken to Twitter to show off what appears to be the packaging for the device, sporting a galactic background and labeled “Coming Soon”.

We don’t know what “Coming Soon” means exactly, but Samsung says that “detailed availability in markets may differ by region.” It’s also not clear at this point exactly which regions the phone might be coming to, but it’s assumable that the South Korean and United States markets are at least two of the targeted locales considering the popularity of The Avengers: Age of Ultron…

Galaxy S6 Edge loses battle against Desert Eagle pistol in slow-mo 4k video

It’s no secret that people love to put smartphones through a plethora of harsh drop, bend, and waterproof tests. A new trend, however, is to shoot smartphones with a pistol and see how they compare. Popular YouTuber Lewis from Unbox Therapy today shared a new video in which Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge with a dbrand skin is shot with a Desert Eagle pistol.

Verizon pushing Android Lollipop to the Samsung Galaxy S4

AT&T’s Samsung Galaxy S4 received Android Lollipop earlier this month, but now it looks like it’s Verizon’s turn. As you surely already know, the update brings Material Design, changes to Android’s notifications system, and other improvements:

Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce an operating system update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This version brings Android beyond smartphones and tablets, allowing access to apps and Android services on other connected screens like TV’s, cars and wearables. The new material design offers complex animations, 3-D views and improved runtime.

Lollipop is still making its way around (more than 5 months after its first release), and now the time has come for those who have been waiting for the update to hit their Galaxy S4 on Verizon. You can expect the update to appear OTA at some point over the coming days.

Check out Verizon’s release PDF for more information.

Developer gets Android Wear (partially) running on the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2

Samsung made a very bold attempt at entering the now-somewhat-established smartwatch space—long before the current market leaders—with the launch of their Galaxy Gear devices, but none of these wearables ever made very much of an impact. And since these devices came several months before Android Wear even existed, they ran Samsung’s proprietary Tizen operating system, which many users have agreed is notoriously clunky and unintuitive.

Now, a developer on the XDA-Developers forum has started work on porting Android Wear to the Galaxy Gear 2, and it looks like the OS is already partially functional…

Samsung’s BLADE edge smart-knife is perfect for food photos, completely fake

The April Fools’ Day jokes are already streaming in full-force, and Samsung is kicking theirs off a day early with the “announcement” of the new Galaxy BLADE edge smart phone/knife. They may be making fun of themselves more than they think, though, making a joke of a feature many have widely considered to be a gimmick in the first place. The BLADE edge sports a “diamond edge blade,” “patented curved ergonomic ceramic,” a “100% water- and fire-proof display” and a handle that comes in 4 different materials.

Oh, and it comes with a stylus that doubles as a meat thermometer, called the S-Thermometer:

Galaxy BLADE edge comes with a stylus that doubles as a wireless meat thermometer and baking tool, to let you know when your pan-seared foie gras is the right temperature, and when your baked camembert is ready to be taken out of the oven. Use it to ensure the correct water temperature when cooking braised beef short ribs sous vide.

It would be pretty convenient for those who enjoy taking photos of their food to have a camera directly attached to a kitchen knife. Maybe you could even use the blade/device to livestream your cooking from the point of view of the knife/phone. That would be interesting. Of course, this product isn’t real by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s definitely something worth about 5 seconds of chuckling at as you go about your April Fools’ day. It’s probably best to heir on the side of caution for a couple days—this post from Samsung is just the beginning.

Samsung Galaxy S6 gets dunked and brutally beaten, comes out mostly unharmed (Videos)

Samsung water resistance

Every time a new flagship smartphone comes out, YouTube reviewers and testers like to push them to the limit and see how far they can go when brutally tortured—for science, of course. And now that the Galaxy S6 is landing in the hands of some buyers, these tests are finally starting to hit the internet. One YouTuber tests the phone’s waterproof abilities despite it no longer technically being waterproof, and another just absolutely smashes the phone on the ground to see what happens…

Sprint announces HTC One M9 and Galaxy S6 preorders begin March 27

T-Mobile and AT&T both announced today that preorders for the HTC One M9 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 will begin tomorrow, and now Sprint has come out to do the same. It seems as if each carrier is using a different tactic to get you to go with their service (what’s new?), and Sprint’s method will be to offer a lease of the Samsung Galaxy S6 for completely free for those willing to sign up for the Sprint Unlimited Plus plan.

Gartner: iPhone sales led Q4 2014, but Samsung won year where 1b smartphones were sold

Site default logo image

Gartner is out with its latest report tracking smartphone movement during the previous year and more specifically the holiday quarter.

Headlining the report is news that over 1 billion smartphones were sold in 2014, a data point IDC first said was hit in the previous year, adding that two out of three phones sold last year qualified as smartphones.

Gartner’s data shows Apple topped Samsung in worldwide smartphone sales with 74,832,000 units shipped during the holiday quarter, just 1.8 million units more than Samsung, giving Apple 20.4% market share for the quarter, a virtual tie with Samsung’s 19.9%.

Coming up behind Apple and Samsung is Lenovo (which includes sales of Motorola-branded phones), Huawei, and Xiaomi with single digit market share. The collective group of others which amount to 42.4% of the holiday quarter sales.

Samsung posts live stream & countdown to upcoming Mar. 1st Galaxy S6 event

Following a number of teasers showing off what looks to be a next-gen, curved Galaxy device, Samsung today posted a live stream and countdown for its upcoming Unpacked 2015 event scheduled for March 1st.

The event takes place during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona during early March, a venue Samsung and others use annually to unveil their latest devices.

That curved next-gen Galaxy device the company has been showing off in blurry teaser videos is likely its new flagship Galaxy S6, but we’ll have to wait until March 1st to know for sure.

We’ll be at MWC in Barcelona to bring you live coverage of the event as always, but you can also tune into the live stream here on March 1st to watch the announcements in real-time.

Hit up our Galaxy S6 expectations video to get more of the rumored details ahead of the official unveiling.

Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5s more reliable than current wearable fitness devices at measuring activity, finds study

If you were thinking about buying a fitness band, a university study suggests you probably shouldn’t bother: it found that the Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5s measure activity more reliably than most current fitness bands.

The study by the University of Pennsylvania (via EurekAlert!) tested the ability of the phones to measure steps on a treadmill and compared the results to six dedicated fitness bands. The two smartphones had a margin of error of 12.9%, while the error rates of the fitness bands ranged up to 22.7%.

The study tested the Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5s against the Nike Fuelband, Jawbone UP24, Digi-Walker SW-200, Fitbit Flex, Fitbit One and Fitbit Zip. Only the FitBit One and Zip performed significantly better than the two smartphones.
