YouTube rolls out bulk actions for editing multiple videos at once to all users

Google announced via its Official YouTube Partners & Creators Blog that it would begin rolling Bulk Actions for all YouTube users. The feature allows users to make updates to multiple or all videos at once for tasks, such as: adding tags, selecting monetization settings, and editing the privacy preferences of videos. YouTube said the feature is now available to all users through the Video Manager. Select the videos you want to change to access the feature, and then follow “Actions > Advanced.”

Google acquires Channel Intelligence for $125M to improve shopping experience

Google just acquired marketing firm Channel Intelligence for $125 million in cash, according to a press release issued by the company’s parent company ICG Group (via BusinessInsider). The press release said the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of this year after passing the usual regulatory process.

As for what Google wants from the acquisition, Channel Intelligence said on its website that it “tracks online retail sales for a variety of verticals including computing, home improvement, appliances, consumer electronics, toys and other consumer packaged goods.” It also said that it makes “it easy for consumers to find and buy products online.” We can only speculate what Google will do with the technology, but we imagine it would play a role in the company’s ads and shopping businesses.

In an announcement on the Channel Intelligence website, the company noted it has “worked with Google for years” as a featured Google Shopping launch partner with a technology that helps to “maximize sales and Return On Ad Spend (ROAS) with Product Listing Ads (PLAs)”:

New YouTube One Channel design coming soon

YouTube has announced on its official Partners and Creators blog that the new YouTube One Channel, currently only available in limited beta to select content creators, will soon roll out to all. YouTube content creator iJustine made the announcement. A number of other channels are also using the new design, including: DeStorm, EpicMealTime, SORTED, MysteryGuitarMan, LOUD, and Geek & Sundry.

YouTube provided some tips for content creators who want to prepare for the new channel layout:

1) Create a channel trailer to get people to subscribe

On your new channel, you can show a trailer that will only appear to viewers who aren’t already subscribed to your channel. This is your chance to let visitors know what your channel is all about and tell them why they should subscribe!  Keep it short and to the point, and include a clear call to action inviting your audience to subscribe.

2) Create some channel art

Channel art is how you can express the personality of your channel wherever it is seen, whether on a mobile phone, a tablet, a TV, or in a hovercard anywhere on the site!  Here is a template and guidelines on how to start creating channel art that will look great.

Amazon compares Kindle Fire HD to iPad’s Retina display in new TV ad (Video)

Amazon has not been shy about comparing its Kindle Fire devices to iPads. When it released its earnings report in October, Amazon compared the two devices spec by spec and noted the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD has 193 percent more pixels than the iPad mini. Amazon’s latest advertisement for its Kindle Fire boldly put the 8.9-inch HD model up against a full-sized Retina iPad. While noting both offer “stunning HD” and “you may not be able to tell the difference,” Amazon ended the ad by highlighting the $299 price point of the Kindle Fire as being significantly under the latest $499 iPad with Retina display. With Amazon knocking an additional $30 to $50 off the Kindle Fire HD this week, you can grab one for $250 less than an iPad 4.

While the price might be compelling, most reviews (including our own) agreed the Kindle Fire’s software is keeping it from being a true competitor to the iPad and pure Android tablets.

Amazon announces ‘Coins’ virtual currency for Appstore purchases on Kindle Fire

Amazon today announced that it will soon roll out a new virtual currency, known simply as “Coins,” that Kindle Fire owners can use to purchase apps, in-app purchases, and other content from the Amazon Appstore. Amazon said the service will launch for users in the United States in May and noted developers will still take their usual 70-percent revenue for purchases made with Coins. For the launch of Coins, Amazon will give away “tens of millions of dollars’ worth of Amazon Coins” to Kindle Fire users. This is definitely good news for developers who submit their apps by the April 25 deadline.

Amazon Coins is an easy way for Kindle Fire customers to spend money on developers’ apps in the Amazon Appstore, offering app and game developers another substantial opportunity to drive traffic, downloads and increase monetization even further.. Amazon will give customers tens of millions of dollars’ worth of Amazon Coins to use on developers’ apps in the Amazon Appstore—apps and games must be submitted and approved by April 25 to be ready when Amazon Coins arrive in customers’ accounts

Samsung announces low-end Jelly Bean Galaxy Young and Galaxy Fame

Samsung today made things official for two new low-end Galaxy devices coming soon: the Samsung Galaxy Young and Galaxy Fame. Both of the devices sport familiar—and almost identical to one another—Galaxy-like designs, but the Fame provides a slightly larger display and better specs.

The Galaxy Young, which we assume is the lower priced of the two models, includes a 3.27-inch HVGA TFT display, a 1GHz processor, 4GB of onboard storage, 768MB RAM, Bluetooth 3.0, a 1,300mAh battery, and a 3-megapixel camera. The Fame, on the other hand, gets all the same specs, but it is also upgraded to a 3.5-inch display, better 5-megapixel auto focus camera, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC.

Samsung noted that a hybrid Dual SIM variant of the devices will arrive in certain markets, but it didn’t disclose information on pricing or launch dates.

HP unveils 14-inch Pavilion Chromebook, now available for $329

We posted a leaked spec sheet late last month that showed off what appeared to be an upcoming 14-inch Chromebook from HP. HP has officially announced the new Chromebook today. While it might have a 14-inch display two inches wider than any other Chromebook, it also happens to be more expensive than Samsung’s latest offering at $329. That’s significantly more than Samsung’s latest $249 model.

HP offered up full specs on the device that is available to order through the company’s website now. Not only is the HP Pavilion 14-c01us Chromebook more expensive, it’s also heavier than Samsung’s offering at 4lbs compared to 2.5lbs. Battery life is unfortunately the same story with an approximate 4.25 hours quoted compared to the 6.5 hours Samsung’s Chromebook offers. If you can get past that, the new HP device packs in a 14-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit (1,366-by-768-pixel), 1.1GHz Intel Celeron 847 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB SATA SSD, HDMI, USB 2.0, as well as an Ethernet port.

The Samsung Chromebook has been the top-selling laptop on Amazon since it launched; Acer reported that Chromebooks make up 5-10% of US shipments; and in the first two months of 2013 Google announced two new devices from two new partners, Lenovo and HP. In the Enterprise, Google just announced 2,000 schools have deployed Chromebooks and businesses like Kaplan, Dillard’s and Quality Distribution are using Chrome devices as well.

HP’s hoping consumers will opt for the larger display, keyboard, and additional ports for the extra $80, but we’re not too excited about the battery life.

Google’s market cap hits record high of $255.17B

After briefly passing Microsoft in October to become the world’s second-largest tech company, Google’s market cap today reached a record of $255.17 billion with shares trading at an all-time high of $774.92. Google continues to climb, as highlighted in the screenshot above, while Microsoft sits at market cap of $234.41 billion.

FTC recommends Google, Apple, BlackBerry, Microsoft, & app devs improve mobile privacy disclosures

Screen Shot 2013-02-01 at 10.51.38 AMThe Federal Trade Commission released a report today that recommends how owners of mobile platforms can better inform consumers about how their data is being handled. The FTC named a number of companies in its report, including: Amazon, Apple, BlackBerry, Google, and Microsoft, as well as “application (app) developers, advertising networks and analytics companies, and app developer trade associations.”

The recommendations follow the FTC updating its online child privacy law to require parental consent before collecting data from children under the age of 13. It also came as Path agreed to pay an $800,000 settlement to the FTC over last year’s privacy controversy.

In the report, titled “Mobile Privacy Disclosures, Building Trust Through Transparency,” the FTC issued a number of recommendations. The FTC recommended that all platform owners “Provide just-in-time disclosures to consumers and obtain their affirmative express consent before allowing apps to access sensitive content like geolocation.” It recommended app developers take the same measures in addition to having “a privacy policy and make sure it is easily accessible through the app stores.” The report also suggested that companies implement a ” a one-stop “dashboard” into their operating systems so consumers can easily view how their data is being handled by specific apps.

Other recommendations the FTC asked Apple and others to implement include new icons that “depict the transmission of user data” and a “Do Not Track” option for users to easily opt out of their data being sent to third parties.

“FTC staff strongly encourages companies in the mobile ecosystem to work expeditiously to implement the recommendations in this report.  Doing so likely will result in enhancing the consumer trust that is so vital to companies operating in the mobile environment.  Moving forward, as the mobile landscape evolves, the FTC will continue to closely monitor developments in this space and consider additional ways it can help businesses effectively provide privacy information to consumers,” the report states.

Sony kicks off Xperia Z preorders in UK with free $299 headphones

XperiaZ-MDR-1RWe first got a look at Sony’s new flagship 5-inch Xperia Z smartphone when it officially launched at CES in Las Vegas last month. The 1080p, NFC-equipped device sports a 13-megapixel camera, 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor, runs Android 4.1, and has a water resistant exterior. Today the device is finally going up for preorder in the UK. Sony is selling the device for £449.99 without a contract and links to retailers you can preorder on its website. Word has it that O2 customers will be able to get the device for free with a two-year agreement. In addition, the device will apparently be hitting Three and Vodafone on February 28th, but Sony has not yet confirmed a release date.

One interesting move by Sony to kick off preorders of the new device: it is currently offering preorder customers a $299.99 pair of MDR-1R headphones free of charge (as pictured to the right.)

Google hands in settlement proposal in EU antitrust probe

As reported by Bloomberg, European Union Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia today confirmed that Google was able to make yesterday’s Jan. 31 deadline for submitting a settlement proposal in the ongoing antitrust investigation. There is no word yet what exactly the proposed settlement might have included, but a spokesperson for Almunia said Google had sent a “detailed proposal.” Google said it continues to “work co-operatively with the commission.” The probe involves whether some of Google’s practices with its search and ad businesses create unfair competition and abuse the company’s dominance.

Almunia had asked Google to submit concessions by the end of January to address allegations that the company promotes its own specialist search-services, copies rivals’ travel and restaurant reviews, and has agreements with websites and software developers that stifle competition in the advertising industry. He first told Google in May that he wanted to settle the case

The issues at the heart of the investigation are not unlike those involved in the Federal Trade Commission’s recent antitrust probe in the United States. Earlier this month, the FTC announced evidence “does not support a claim that Google was abusing placement of search results” and officially closed its investigation. In that case, Google agreed to license its Motorola patents on fair terms to any other company and alter some of its search results “to let websites opt out of having their content scraped without being punished in overall search results.”

Court again rejects Apple’s attempt at Samsung Galaxy Nexus sales ban

Reuters reported today that a U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington rejected Apple’s attempt to get a sales ban on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. Apple asked the court to revisit a previous decision to reject the company’s request for the sales ban leading up to a full trial set for March 2014. The case involved patents not included in the California trial that awarded Apple a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung.

Apple wanted the full Federal Circuit of Appeals, made up of nine active judges, to reverse the earlier ruling. But in a brief order on Thursday, the court rejected Apple’s request without detailed explanation or any published dissents… Several experts had believed that Apple faced long odds, as the legal issues in play were not considered controversial enough to spur full court review.

Reuters noted that Apple could still appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court:

Apple could still appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, the high court has made it more difficult for patent plaintiffs to secure sales injunctions in recent years.

Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd pitch ideas for Samsung’s ‘Next Big Thing’ Super Bowl ad [Video]

Samsung already confirmed that Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd would be teaming up to star in a two-minute long Super Bowl ad for the company, and today we get a taste of what to expect with a short video showing the two actors pitching ideas for the upcoming ad. The full Super Bowl ad, titled “The Big Pitch,” apparently “shows Rogen and Rudd on a quest to become the Next Big Thing” and was directed by Jon Favreau.

Google+ Android app updated with new notifications tray, community moderation features, more

 

We told you earlier about a nice update to the Google Play Music app, and today we also get some welcomed new features to the Google+ Android app. Google employee Brian Glick shared the announcement on his Google+ page earlier today, noting that version 3.5 brings new features for managing communities, a redesigned notification tray, as well the ability to include links from clipboard when creating a new post.

As for the community moderation features:

– Promote, remove, or ban members from their community
– Restore or remove posts that were marked for review

The new, slick notifications tray that slides out from the right side of the screen is pictured in the gallery above. Google+ version 3.5 is available on Google Play now.

Google Play Music updated with improved widget, new default album art, and more

GooglePlayMusicAppGoogle has updated its Google Play Music app today with several new features and some fixes to bugs that many users have experienced. On top of now being able to continue playing instant mixes past 25 songs, Google also added a previous button to the widget that allows users to cycle backward through playlists without opening the app. Other improvements in the update include the “ability to shuffle an album, artist or playlist,” new default artwork for albums, and progress indicators on album and playlist pages for pinned tracks. Google also included a fix for freezing issues on the Galaxy S III.

Google Forms refreshed with real-time collaboration, auto-save, and more new features

We have been used to real-time collaboration with Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets for quite some time, but today Google announced on the Google Drive blog that it is refreshing its Forms app with new features, including the ability to collaborate in real-time.

If you need to work with two colleagues on a survey, all three of you can work on the same form simultaneously and even have a group chat on the side, without leaving the form.

Google also said it’s making the entire Forms experience within Google Drive faster and cleaner including auto-saves and the ability to undo and redo edits. You can also now paste bullet lists and multiple spreadsheet rows to automatically insert answers, as well as access new keyboard shortcuts:

Improved copy-and-paste will let you copy a list of bullets from the web or multiple rows of text from a spreadsheet; then, when you paste into a form, each line will be appear as an individual answer. And you can use keyboard shortcuts to get things done more quickly.

The updated Forms app will roll out to Google Drive and Sheets users over the next few days. You’ll also be able to access the new Forms experience from the Chrome web app. A video of the new copy/paste enhancements below:

Google Earth ‘Tour Guide’ feature adds 100K new tours & 1M user-generated photos

Google announced today on the Google Earth Google+ page that it is launching a major update to the iOS, Android, and desktop Google Earth apps. Google is updating the tour guide and 3D imagery features it launched in October with Google Earth 7, and it announced the addition of 100,000 new tours of “popular sites, cities and places across 200 countries.” It is also adding as over 1 million user-generated Panoramio photos:

The new, richer tours combine 3D flyovers, Wikipedia snippets and – for the first time – place highlight and more than 1 million user-generated Panoramio photos in order to create an immersive and educational exploration of your favorite places. Each tour ends with a selection of photo thumbnails which were selected from Panoramio as the best representation of a given place. Clicking on one of the thumbnails enables a full screen photo experience.

Report: YouTube to launch paid subscriptions between $1 and $5/month by spring

We heard last summer straight from YouTube chief Salar Kamangar that Google’s video service considered introducing subscription-based content that would rival traditional cable channels and see users paying a fee to access some partner channels. Today, a report from Ad Age, quoting “multiple people familiar” with YouTube’s plans, shared some additional details.

According to the report, YouTube will not only charge somewhere between $1 and $5 per month for access to certain channels, it will also charge for some “content libraries and access to live events, a la pay-per-view, as well as self-help or financial advice shows.”

YouTube has reached out to a small group of channel producers and asked them to submit applications to create channels that users would have to pay to access. As of now it appears that the first paid channels will cost somewhere between $1 and $5 a month, two of these people said. In addition to episodic content, YouTube is also considering charging for content libraries and access to live events, a la pay-per-view, as well as self-help or financial advice shows.

Ad Age’s sources said the service could launch as early as the second quarter of 2013 with around 25 channels and a 45-55 revenue split for content creators:

Google Wallet updated with refreshed UI and performance improvements

Google Wallet has been updated today with a few new features including enhancements to the overall user interface. As for the UI, the app’s navigation has been moved around slightly with loaded cards stored in the “My Wallet” tab apart from your default card.

Google also noted “improvements to the user interface, application stability, and battery life” in the update’s release notes and highlighted support for all cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

Following FTC fines, UK iPhone users sue Google for bypassing Safari privacy settings

Google agreed to pay a record $22.5 million Federal Trade Commission fine in August following an investigation into whether it bypassed mobile Safari security settings to install tracking cookies without user consent. Now, twelve iPhone users in the United Kingdom have launched a lawsuit against Google that seeks compensation related to the tracking. They also want a “proper explanation” about how their personal information was used. The Telegraph via Business Insider has the full story:

It is thought the case, being brought against Google by law firm Olswang on behalf of the internet users, is the first of its kind in the UK. They say that cookies, small tracking files, were installed by Google on the Apple computers and mobile devices of those using the Safari internet browser without their knowledge .

Claimants thought that cookies would be blocked because of assurances given by Google in the time their devices were allegedly affected, from summer 2011 to spring 2012, and also because of Safari’s default settings.

“We hope that they will take this opportunity to give Safari users a proper explanation about what happened, to apologize and, where appropriate, compensate the victims of their intrusion.”

Report: Android and iOS capture record 92 percent of global smartphone market in Q4 2012

According to the latest numbers from Strategy Analytics that measure global smartphone operating system shipments and marketshare for the fourth quarter of 2012, iOS and Android together accounted for 92 percent of all shipments. Both iOS and Android were able to significantly increase market share over Q3, while global smartphone shipments over the entire year reached a record 700.1 million units.

As for iOS, Apple grew 29 percent annually by selling 135.8 million iPhones throughout the year. The company captured 22 percent of the market in Q4, down from the 24 percent it held in the year-ago quarter, and its share of the smartphone market for the year comes in at 19.4-percent. According to Strategy Analytics, that is up slightly from the 19 percent it took during 2011.

With the “others” category shrinking from 32.3-percent of the market in 2011 to just 12.2-percent in 2012, Android was able to post the largest gains jumping to 70.1-percent of the global market during the fourth quarter from 51.3-percent a year ago. The other category of course includes other platforms, such as BlackBerry, Symbian, Bada, and Windows, all of which together only grabbed 7.9-percent of the market in Q4 2012. That’s down from 25.1-percent in Q4 2011. Android’s gains are clearly at the expense of the “others,” as Apple continues to slowly gain marketshare as well.

Report: Samsung and Apple dominate Q4 with 51 percent of global smartphone market

While Samsung has conveniently left specific smartphone sales numbers out of its Q4 earnings release yesterday (as usual), today we get a look at the latest estimates for the quarter coming from research firms Strategy Analytics and IDC.

We know that Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones during the quarter, and today both research firms put Samsung just over 63 million units for Q4 2012. That means Samsung was able to capture 29 percent of the market last quarter (up from 36.2 million units and 22.5-percent of the market in the year ago quarter). Apple is of course a close second among the top five smartphone vendors with 21.8-percent—down slightly from the 23 percent it held in the same quarter last year. In Q4 2011, Apple and Samsung were neck and neck at about 23 percent of the market each.

The increasing market share for Apple, and especially Samsung, over the past year comes at the expense of Nokia. It experienced a drop from 16 percent to 5 percent of the market during the past year.

Google Images redesigned to make browsing images faster

Google announced today on its Google+ page that it is redesigning Google Images to make browsing and finding images faster and more reliable. The new design, pictured above, will allow users to click an image to slide out a larger version without leaving the page. From there users can flip left and right through whole sets of image previews, or select the familiar “Visit page”, “view original image”, and “Image details” options for the currently selected image. Google said the new design will be rolling out worldwide in the next few days for every tax attorney who’s excited to give it a try.

AT&T announces record Android sales in fourth quarter results

att-sign-28AT&T just announced its fourth quarter results highlighting record smartphones sales and a record 8.6 million iPhone activations. In its results, the company said it had its best quarter ever for Android sales, but didn’t highlight specific numbers like it did for iPhone. It all added up to record sales, the most ever among any U.S. carrier, with 10.2 million units sold during the quarter:

In the quarter, the company activated a record 8.6 million iPhones, with 16 percent new to AT&T. The company also had its best-ever sales quarter for Android smartphones.

AT&T also reported its largest increase in three years for subscribers with 780,000 wireless postpaid net adds and a total increase in total net wireless subscribers of  1.1 million. As for LTE, the company said 55 percent of postpaid smartphone customers were 4G-capable devices while LTE should be rolled out to 250 million or more people by the end of 2013:
