The HTC ‘Volantis’ is the company’s 8.9-inch aluminum Nexus tablet

Site default logo image

The fate of the Nexus line of devices has been up in the air for sometime now due to rumors of the Android Silver program and an LG executive saying that his company had no plans on manufacturing the next Nexus device. Android Police, however, has now published information regarding an upcoming Nexus tablet. According to the report, Google and HTC have teamed up to develop the next Nexus tablet, dubbed the Volantis. The device has an 8.9-inch screen and looks to potentially replace the Nexus 10.

HTC reportedly developing a phone capable of taking the “ultimate selfie,” coming to AT&T in Q4

Site default logo image

HTC’s failed Facebook phone

Because apparently it’s what the world needs, HTC is reportedly developing a phone that will be marketed as the “ultimate selfie phone.” According to the normally reliable evleaks, the device is codenamed Eye and will be coming to AT&T with a fourth quarter release. Other details are still sparse, but the big thing is, it’s a sefie phone, capable of taking the ultimate selfie.

Back in 2011, HTC released the ChaCha, better known as the Facebook phone, that failed miserably. It appears, more than two years later, that the company learned absolutely nothing with that device and is going to continue to make gimmicky phones that no one will buy.

Nevertheless, if you, for some reason, want a phone that’s capable of taking the ultimate selfie and other phones just don’t work well enough for you, wait until Q4 for the HTC Eye. It’s unclear what the device will have that makes it better for selfies than other devices, but presumably we’ll see a few leaks between now and the launch to tell us.

But first….let me take a selfie.

HTC One M8 Prime has been ‘suspended indefinitely,’ M8 Plus is still in development

There have been so many rumors surrounding the launch of a premium HTC One M8 that it’s almost hard to keep track of them all. Initially labeled as the HTC One M8 Prime, this device was said to feature a QHD display with specifications that would outweigh HTC’s recent One M8 release.

Tonight, renowned leaker Evleaks claimed that the Prime has been officially canned by HTC and we won’t be seeing a public launch any time soon. In a way this report is accurate. The “One M8 Prime” is not and never has been the official name of the device in question. According to our sources, however, the actual phone referred to by that title is still in development…

Rumor: HTC ‘One Wear’ smartwatch to be round, available in polycarbonate and metal

The very same guy who brought us video footage of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active more than a week before it was officially released has today published a bit of information about the upcoming HTC smartwatch, tentatively named the “One Wear.”

It’s been an interesting few days here in Taiwan. Sources have provided more than rumors but a actual demo of the HTC smart watch. I did ask for a name. Tentatively it’s called the One Wear, slated to launch late august early September of this year. The design is round much like the Moto 360, will be available in a polycarbonate and metal flavors.

While these Taiwan-sourced rumors should probably be taken with a grain of salt, none of this supposedly leaked information sounds particularly out of place. First of all, Google has already told us that they’re working with a wide variety of manufacturers, one of which being HTC. And with a tentative name like “One Wear,” it’s likely that the device being referenced is indeed HTC’s foray into Android Wear.

HTC One Remix render spotted with Verizon branding

Site default logo image

The HTC One mini 2 is rumored to hit the US as the HTC One Remix and although we’ve officially seen the former, we’ve yet to see it materialize with any carrier branding. Today, however, we’re getting a closer look at what might be heading to Verizon thanks to the often reliable @evleaks. If in fact the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer decides to bring its petite smartphone to the US, it’ll most likely be coated with Big Red’s emblem.

Plastic HTC One (E8) makes official debut (Update)

Site default logo image

After several weeks of rumors and leaks, the cheaper plastic version of the HTC One M8 also known as the “Ace” has surfaced on HTC’s website. Aptly named the E8, this budget-friendly take on the company’s current flagship smartphone appears to retain its high-end counterpart’s BoomSound speakers, but it lacks the Duo Camera setup offered by the M8.

HTC plans premium water-resistant ‘Plus’ and plastic-backed ‘Advance’ One M8 variants

There’s a lot of talk about HTC releasing a “Prime” variant of the One M8, but until now we haven’t heard much outside of rumors/speculation and some alleged renders leaked by Evleaks. 9to5Google has now learned that HTC actually has two new variants on the way, “Plus” and “Advance,” and it does have plans to release a version of its flagship M8 smartphone branded with one of those labels.

The full render is included after the break.

Apple and Google agree to settle patent litigation, but will not cross license

Site default logo image

Photo: USA Today

According to a court filing discovered by Reuters, Apple and Google’s Motorola Mobility unit have agreed to settle their ongoing smartphone patent litigation battle against each other. In a statement, the two companies said that this agreement does not include the ability cross license each other’s patents, but rather the promise to “work together in some areas of patent reform.”

The two tech giants have been battling it out over various patents for several years now, both directly and indirectly. It’s important to note, however, that this agreement is solely between Apple, Google, and its Motorola Mobility unit. This does not apply to any lawsuits between Android device manufacturers, such as Samsung and HTC, and Apple. Although theoretically, it would apply to patents owned by Google that device manufacturers are licensing.

A verdict was reached in the latest Apple v Samsung battle just a few weeks ago, with Apple being ruled as the victor, albeit small. The court ruled that Samsung owed Apple $119 million, which is far less than the $2 billion it was seeking.

The HTC One mini 2 has officially been announced. This compact smartphone takes on a similar design when compared to the One (M8), but in a smaller form-factor. It’s definitely an upgrade over the previous One mini, but with its size comes downgraded specifications.

AT&T rolling out fix for HTC One M8 Google Drive bug

Site default logo image

Last month, HTC acknowledged a bug that blocked its Advantage customers from redeeming 50GB of Google Drive storage space. The Taiwanese manufacturer advised that it was working on a fix for the matter and said that it expected a patch to be ready a few weeks later. Today, the company announced that AT&T had approved an update for the HTC One M8 and that users could download the update and claim their cloud storage.

Latest Chromium code carries references to the Google Nexus 6, Nexus 8

Site default logo image

Coming roughly a week after the Nexus 8’s “Flounder” codename was shown off in Chromium’s source code, we now have a reference to the “Nexus 6” (via Florian Kiersch).

The Nexus 6 reference can still be seen on the Code Review page, under the new code section. There is also a reference to the Nexus 8 in the older code. The Nexus 8 is expected to be produced by HTC, as earlier leaks have suggested. The “8” is also likely a reference to the screen size, which would make the Nexus 8 larger than the ASUS-produced Nexus 7. Beyond this, very little is known about the specifications or ETA of the Nexus 8.

The Nexus 6 is also almost entirely a mystery.

HTC One M8 spotted in blue

We recently heard that HTC was going to spin its color wheel and offer its new flagship smartphone in a variety of colors. Already outed in pink, the often reliable @evleaks has produced photos of a blue HTC One M8.The popular Twitter feed hinted that the phone should be available this year, but didn’t provide any other details. We’re still sticking to our carrier color code theory, which would place this M8 variant  on Ma Bell’s network. No matter where this blue HTC One happens to land, it’s good to know that you can still take advantage of  that Harman Kardon sound. That is if you’re willing to take a few calculated risks.

This might be the HTC J Butterfly 2

Site default logo image

Overall, the HTC J Butterfly had a good showing in several different markets, so why not give it a follow up? HTC might be doing just that, as famed phone leaker @evleaks recently posted a render of a device referred to as the “HTC B2” While there’s only a front-facing shot of this phone, it shows off a whole lot of display real estate. Also worth noting, is that unlike the successor to HTC’s other high-end handset, the B2 appears to be cutting back on the precious metals in favor of a more cost-effective build.

Leaked photo of pink HTC One (M8) – perhaps destined for T-Mobile?

Generally reliable source @evleaks has posted a photo of the pink model HTC One (M8) he previously said was on the way, along with blue and red models. He previously leaked a photo of the red version.

No further details are given beyond the fact that it will be released at some point this year. After images of the red model were shown with Verizon branding, it made us wonder whether blue may be for AT&T and pink for T-Mobile? However, the pink model shown in the photo has no carrier branding.

As for the phone itself, we love the hardware, though have mixed views on Sense 6.

Nostalgia much? T-Mobile still has the HTC G1 promo site up like its 2008

It’s like a good old-fashioned Throwback Thursday… except it’s Friday (TGIF beats #TBT anyway) But if you’re still rocking the Android smartphone that started it all, you probably don’t care what day of the week it is.

Maybe it’s for the sake of nostalgia or T-Mobile CEO John Legere didn’t get the memo (after all, this phone pre-dates his role at T-Mobile by 4 years!), but as a Reddit user comically notes, T-Mobile still has the site up for the HTC G1, the Android phone to rule them all… in 2008. Or maybe this is all part of the next big Uncarrier movement, although as the fine print warns, it just might not be in stock.

At any rate, the buy now and upgrade buttons take you to Samsung’s shiny new Galaxy S5 phone like it’s 2014 or something, and the “Experience G1” button does anything but that as it lands you to the carrier’s homepage. The page does animate, though, showing off the best apps you could ask for on a Cupcake-named operating system. You can step into the time capsule while its still preserved and see for yourself.

HTC One (M8) reportedly set to ship in blue, red and pink

Site default logo image

We’ve already heard that HTC may possibly be working on a cheaper plastic version of its HTC One (M8), but how about a broader set of hues for its flagship smartphone? According to the often reliable @evleaks, the Taiwanese phone maker is preparing to reissue the M8 in red, blue and pink. Not too much else was shared about these colorful options, but this wouldn’t be the first time HTC decided to have a little fun with its color palette — remember the purple EVO 3D from Sprint?

HTC reportedly planning plastic ‘M8 Ace’ to compete with Galaxy S5

Site default logo image

Earlier this month, @evleaks tweeted an image of a mysterious device dubbed the HTC M8 Ace. At the time, very few details about it were known. Engadget, however, is now reporting that the HTC M8 Ace will essentially be HTC’s answer to the Galaxy S5, but cheaper.

Much like the Galaxy S5, the M8 Ace will feature an all-plastic design. The specs will also be nearly identical, with the M8 Ace packing a 5-inch 1080p display and a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor.

HTC One (M8) Review: It’s almost perfect (Video)

The HTC One (M8) has been one of the most anticipated smartphone releases in 2014. Following the success of the One (M7) wasn’t going to be an easy task, but somehow the company pulled it off. Well, almost. This is nearly one of the best smartphones for your money, but there are a few things that hold the HTC One (M8) just inches away from Android perfection.

With the M8, you’re getting an even better build quality than its predecessor. HTC claims that the One (M8) has a body constructed of 90 percent metal, which is a 20 percent boost over last year’s model. There is nothing about this device that feels cheap. It’s an epic win in the quality department. It may be a little slippery (and look like a stainless steel refrigerator), but overall I’m very happy with the build quality here.

HTC’s Senior Vice President of Design is leaving to focus on other projects

Site default logo image

Shortly after shipping its new flagship (and generally well received) smartphone, HTC’s Senior Vice President of design is departing from his role at the company. Scott Croyle, who HTC hired when it acquired his company One and Co. studios six years ago, will be transitioning out of his role as he prepares to focus on non-HTC projects, The Verge reports. As part of his exit, Croyle will consult with the company as his #2, Jonah Becker, takes over his responsibilities, HTC confirmed to the site. The report also shares that Drew Bamford, who leads development of the widely-critiqued Sense user interface, will now be in charge of all software and services…

Glitch blocking AT&T HTC One M8 owners from redeeming free 50GB of Google Drive storage

HTC’s Advantage program offers screen replacement, a software update guarantee and 50GB of Google Drive storage. Actually, there’s a problem with that last one. At least for AT&T customers who own the HTC One M8. Recently, the Taiwanese manufacturer posted a status update on its Advantage website stating that there’s a technical issue blocking Ma Bell’s customers from redeeming their Drive storage.

Dear HTC Customers and Enthusiasts, A minor technical error has temporarily deactivated the Google Drive cloud storage offer for the AT&T HTC One (M8). Please be aware that we are working to fix this error, and the 50GB of Google Drive storage space will be available by Mid-May for this device. Thank you for your patience, and we hope you are enjoying your new HTC One (M8). Sincerely, Ed Kuhner Vice President Customer Experience

HTC didn’t provide any further details on this matter, but by saying it’s working to resolve the problem suggests that it could be an in-house issue. The company claims that things should be resolved in the next few weeks.

HTC One M8 Mini reportedly coming to Verizon

The HTC One M8 Mini — talk about a mouthful — is rumored to be on its way to Verizon, if @evleaks on Twitter is to be believed. The HTC One M8 recently launched to a very warm reception, though some critiques did state that the device is difficult to hold due to its large size and slick metallic back.

Essentially no other details are known about the HTC One M8 Mini, though it’s a good bet that it could match its larger counterpart on almost every point. The screen will likely come in at about 4.3″, and may have a 720p display as such. Other than that, it’s it’s likely the Mini will retain the same design, camera, speakers, and internal specs as the One M8.
