Samsung is a technology conglomerate based out of South Korea that makes some of the world's most popular smartphones.

Samsung R&D logo

Samsung is a technology conglomerate based out of South Korea that is responsible for some of the most popular smartphones in the world, including the Galaxy S and Galaxy A series devices. Beyond smartphones, Samsung also manufactures and sells laptops, wearables, home appliances, and more.

The company was founded in 1938 as a trading company dealing with local produce, fish, noodles, and more. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Samsung entered the electronics business with its first product, a black and white television. In the 1990s, the company expanded its electronics efforts by producing displays and chips for processing and storage, core components of the business today. In the 2000s, the company established itself as a big player in cell phones, which later evolved into the Samsung Galaxy smartphone lineup.

Off the back of successful feature phones, Samsung quickly became a dominant player in the smartphone industry. The original Galaxy device was launched in 2009, which ran Android 1.5 “Cupcake” out of the box. Just a year later, the “Galaxy S” brand made its debut, selling 24 million units of its original model and 40 million of its sequel. The Galaxy S III was its first massive hit, though, selling 70 million devices starting in 2012. The success of that mainstream flagship propelled Samsung to be a major player in the premium smartphone market.

The latest Samsung flagships include the Galaxy S26 series, as well as foldable smartphones such as Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7.

The flagship market is only a fraction of the company’s total smartphone sales. It’s actually more affordable devices such as the Galaxy A series that really earn Samsung its spot in the industry. The Galaxy A series has produced some of the best-selling Android smartphones in the world for the past few years, for instance, with the Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A51 both topping the charts in their respective release windows.

To say Samsung’s smartphones have been influential is an understatement, as the brand has produced some of the biggest trends in the industry. Most memorable is the rise of large-screen smartphones. In 2011, just two years into the rise of its Android-based Galaxy line, Samsung debuted the original Galaxy Note, which was ridiculed for its large 5.3-inch display. The phone went on to sell 10 million units and spawn nine popular sequels leading up to the Galaxy Note 20 series in 2020. In 2016, Samsung famously released the Galaxy Note 7, which was recalled due to batteries that were bursting and catching fire. The phone was discontinued, and fans ultimately had to wait until the Note 8 was released a year later. In 2021, Samsung reportedly canceled its Galaxy Note 21 series due to the ongoing chip shortage, and the best of the Note has now been merged into the ongoing Galaxy S “Ultra” release.

In 2019, Samsung announced its first foldable smartphone in the Galaxy Fold. The book-style foldable had high-end specs and an inner display that was far larger than what could traditionally fit in a pocket, but its launch was met with negativity as several early reviewers faced major issues with the inner display. The company opted to cancel the launch and redesign the product, relaunching it months later with several solutions. In 2020, the Galaxy Z Flip debuted with much better reception and solutions for problems that plagued the Fold, though with a new flip-phone style design. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 took those same ideas and applied them to the original design while improving the displays both inside and out.

Samsung has continued to build on this form factor each year, often with big improvements, including water resistance, better hinges, upgraded cameras, and more.

Galaxy Z Fold 7, especially, proved to be a major update, offering a much thinner form factor that finally caught up to other foldable makers. It was successful, too, with Samsung reporting record sales after the device was released.

What other products does Samsung sell?

Beyond its extremely successful smartphones, Samsung sells a plethora of other products. There are TVs, home appliances, and more. The company also products and sells electrical components, AMOLED displays, and more to other companies.

Relating closely to its smartphones, though, are Samsung’s tablets, laptops, and smartwatches. Android tablets are fairly rare on the market, but the Galaxy Tab series has stuck around as an affordable option as well as a flagship one, the latter usually including support for DeX. The company also products laptops using both Microsoft’s Windows and Google’s ChromeOS, the former linking to Galaxy phones using the “Your Phone” integration that is deeply built into One UI.

Finally, the Galaxy Watch lineup has been one of the best options for an Android-compatible smartwatch, and each model pairs best with a Galaxy smartphone.

Two weeks after launch, gigantic Galaxy View tablet is $100 off

Just a couple of weeks after the huge tablet was officially launched, the Samsung Galaxy View is already being sold at $100 off its original full retail price. Initially, the 18.4-inch Android tablet was being offered for $599 despite having decidedly mid-range specifications. At $500, the device is much more palatable. Although — being a very niche product — it’s not likely to sell by the millions.

The Samsung Galaxy View runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, features a full HD resolution screen and is powered by a 1.6GHz octa-core processor. There’s 2GB RAM and 32GB storage, which you can expand up to 128GB using a MicroSD card. Samsung boasts that it can be used for 8 hours straight without needing to be charged.

From the outset, it’s been clear this device is primarily designed to be a multimedia hub that you can move around. It’s far too big to be a regular tablet you take everywhere with you. However, to stream video in any room in your house, it’s ideal. Rather than having a TV or screen in every room, you can pick up the Galaxy View and take it with you to the kitchen, bedroom, or wherever else you might want to catch up on Daredevil, or Jessica Jones. To boost the multimedia experience, there’s a pair of 4W speakers on the back.

If you want a huge tablet, or second/portable screen to take around the house, the Galaxy View is available now for $499 on Amazon.

A first look & walkthrough of TouchWiz changes coming with Android 6.0 Marshmallow

With the latest version of Android, version 6.0 Marshmallow, reportedly scheduled to start arriving for Samsung devices at the end of the year and into next, today we get a look at changes to Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay coming in the update via XDA-Developers.

Among the changes are tweaks to the user interface (most noticeably in the notifications panel) with a new color palette that the report notes is now “ predominantly white, with the same green accents” as the previous design, as pictured above on a Note 5.

There are touches of Material design throughout, new animations, and cleaned-up menus, while some of the stock TouchWiz apps also get a fresh coat of paint. Here’s a quick look at few:

TENAA leak suggests Samsung is about to release Galaxy S6-like flip-phone

Samsung has vastly changed its design ethos over the course of 2015, and we think that’s a good thing. Swapping out the flimsy, cheap plastic chassis in favor of a much more premium glass and metal combo is exactly what the manufacturer needed to breathe life back in to its flagship smartphone ranges. The look was first adopted by the Galaxy S6, and looks set to be used in yet another phone soon, albeit one with a slightly different form factor…

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 now ships with warning not to insert S-Pen the wrong way

A recently published YouTube unboxing video reveals that Samsung has begun shipping its Galaxy Note 5 handsets with a warning label, telling users not to insert the proprietary stylus in the wrong way. It may seem like pointing out the obvious, but Sammy has very real reasons for warning users.

When the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 launched earlier this fall, it was discovered that the device didn’t like having the S-Pen stylus inserted in to its silo the incorrect way. It’s not a fault as such, since inserting it the wrong way is user error, but the fact that this error would break the smartphone wasn’t as forgivable.

Thanks to the S-Pen’s new clickable top — and the catches which hold the stylus in place when stowed — the top would catch on the inner ‘hooks’ and either get stuck, or break them. We detailed exactly what happens in an in-depth post back when the issue first came to light.

Samsung did halfheartedly address the issue in a statement back when the problem was at its most prominent, and did so by pointing people to the user guide which shows the correct insertion of the S-Pen. Clearly though, the issues haven’t stopped since then, and Sammy wants to make it as clear as possible to Note 5 buyers that the stylus only fits in one way.

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge allegedly already in testing at AT&T

Over recent weeks and months we’ve read numerous reports regarding the Galaxy S7 and its dual-curve sibling. Most recently, the rumors have suggested the device will see an earlier-than-normal release, perhaps indicating that Samsung will unveil its next hot flagship before MWC in Barcelona. Some speculate we might even see an announcement as soon as January. A tweet from well-known leakster, Evan Blass, does nothing to discredit those rumors:

[tweet https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/665279918633295872 align=’center’]

Blass believes that with testing already happening at AT&T, we could see the phones land in the early part of Q1 2016. In other words: Between the beginning of January and mid-February. While the tweet alone doesn’t confirm anything, it certainly adds credibility to those previous launch timeframe rumors.

In recent years, Samsung has used MWC in Barcelona as the platform to announce the Galaxy S lineup. But it hasn’t always been that way. With MWC scheduled for 22-25 February in 2016, and big press events normally occurring before the conference officially kicks off, Samsung could once again use the Barcelona event to show off its next flagship phones. If it did, it would certainly (just about) fit in with Evan’s early-to-mid Q1 launch timeframe. Or Sammy could do what it did with the Galaxy Note 5 launch and decide to steal a march on a major conference by announcing its devices at a separate event beforehand.

It’s been reported in the past that Samsung will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor in the Galaxy S7 (at least in some markets). The powerful quad-core chips has just been officially outed by Qualcomm, and looks like it’ll be next year’s processor to beat. Saying that, it’ll be interesting to see how it compares performance-wise with Samsung’s own recently-announced Exynos 8890. If rumors are to be believed, the Snapdragon models will go for sale in China and the US, while the Exynos-equipped phones will be sold in Europe and other international markets.

Opinion: Android OEMs have power, but Google making its own phone might be worth the risk

At the beginning, OEM partners were vital in order to spread Android. Google would handle the hard work of creating the operating system, while OEMs would manufacture and deal with carriers. This approach worked and Android is now the most used mobile OS and Samsung is the largest smartphone vendor in terms of shipped devices. But how is Google going to keep Android growing into the future?..

Gold Platinum Samsung Galaxy Note 5 now available at T-Mobile

Along with its brand new Binge On unlimited video streaming, and double data Simple Choice plans, T-Mobile has also announced that the Galaxy Note 5 is now available in a fresh new coat of paint. T-Mo is now selling the Gold Platinum version of Samsung’s flagship phablet in both 32GB and 64GB flavors. Previously, T-Mobile only offered the black and white models.

You can order the Galaxy note 5 in gold on EIP with $0 down and 24 monthly finance payments of $29.17, or grab it with T-Mo’s JUMP! on Demand leasing program for as little as $15 per month as long as you trade in a phone. It’s worth noting that if you want to save a little money on the Galaxy Note 5, you can pick up the black version on Amazon for just $633. What’s more, you’ll get it without T-Mobile’s preloaded bloatware and services.

Samsung Galaxy S7 firmware development reportedly begins, could signal early announcement

Samsung has begun development on the firmware for both versions of the upcoming Galaxy S7, according to reports (via SamMobile). Development on both G930FXXU0AOK6 and G935FXXU0AOK6 started this month, perhaps signaling the phone could arrive earlier than usual. Last year, the same development work didn’t start until December, and the phone was announced at the beginning of March, at MWC in Barcelona. If there’s a similar gap between development and release this time around, we could see a phone announced as early as January or early February…

Newest Samsung Gear VR now available to pre-order for $100

Back at its event in August, when it launched the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge plus, Samsung also unveiled the first consumer-focussed Gear VR headset. The ‘Innovator Edition’ tag has been dropped, and you can now pre-order the latest version of the Samsung Gear VR from Best Buy for $99. It’s compatible with all the latest flagship Samsung Galaxy products including the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5.

Samsung built the new Gear VR to be lighter and more comfortable to wear than its predecessor. It’s built with flexible padding, has an easy-to-use touchpad on the side, and ships with a 16GB microSD card loaded with 3D movie trailers and 360-degree videos to enjoy right out of the box.

Multiple companies are aiming to transform the way we view multimedia with virtual reality. Samsung partnered with Oculus to create an affordable, smartphone-powered headset, while Google developed the even more budget-friendly Cardboard. HTC went more high end with its Vive (which is yet to be released), and of course, there’s Oculus’ own-brand set among others. Even YouTube recently updated its Android app to enhance it with VR content and site-wide Cardboard compatibility.

In short, companies are seeing VR as the next step in multimedia and are betting big to make it happen. Whether or not the Gear VR becomes a lasting or memorable part of that move is yet to be seen.

Samsung’s enormous Galaxy View now available at several online retailers

Samsung’s enormous Galaxy View tablet miniature television was made official a couple of weeks ago, and now it’s starting to appear at a variety of retailers across the web. If for some reason your home needs one of these behemoths, you can now grab the View at Amazon, B&H Photo VideoBest Buy, as well as Samsung’s site, all starting at its $599 MSRP.

With the View, you’ll get an  18.4-inch full HD 1080p display, the Exynos 7580 octa-core 1.6 GHz processor, 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage, which can be expanded an extra 128GB via microSD. There’s also a 5,700mAh battery, stereo speakers, Bluetooth 4.1, and a 2.1-megapixel front facing camera. The Galaxy View runs Android Lollipop out of the box, sadly.

It’s incredibly easy to bypass Factory Reset Protection on a Samsung phone [Video]

Factory Reset Protection was introduced with Android Lollipop, and, like Apple’s iCloud Activation Lock, it’s supposed to make it really hard to resell a stolen Android phone. The gist is that when you use Android recovery menu to reset a phone to factory settings, the phone will require upon reboot that you sign in using a Google account you previously used on the device before resetting it. If someone steals your phone and wipes it, they need your Google account for it to be anything but a brick.

Well, it appears that a flaw in Samsung’s phones lets potential thieves around this security measure, and it looks like the workaround (via RootJunky) takes just about five minutes to pull off…

Upcoming Galaxy Alpha benchmark results leak, suggest full HD screen and octa-core Exynos chip in mid-range package

Value for money in the smartphone industry has never been as good as it is now. As OnePlus revealed last week, it’s possible to bring specifications which we’d have considered top-tier just 12-18 months ago and sell them in a device half the price of today’s flagship phones. Samsung, it seems, is keen to follow suit with the follow up to its Galaxy A5. A benchmark result over at GFXBench suggests that we’ll see a phone — model number SM-A510F — launched by the Korean tech giant with a full HD screen…

Qualcomm: Rumors of Snapdragon 820 overheating are not true

A couple of days back, rumors emerged claiming that Samsung was working hard to deal with heating problems found while testing the Snapdragon 820 processor in its upcoming Galaxy S7. Although it’s similar to the rumors surrounding the SD810 last year, it was still surprising. Qualcomm stated earlier in the year that its next processor has enhanced performance and efficiency. A stance which the manufacturer was keen to repeat on Weibo having seen those Samsung rumors:

Some recent media reports about Xiaolong 820 rumors performance is not real news.Xiaolong 820 processor all IP modules are to achieve improvement and enhancement, and the use of second-generation 14-nanometer manufacturing process. Xiaolong 820 reached all our design specifications. More importantly, the Xiaolong 820 OEM manufacturers to meet the requirements of its terminal cooling and performance specifications

Qualcomm is no stranger to controversy surrounding the performance of its mobile processors. Last year, the Snapdragon 810 was dropped from the Galaxy S6 before launch, allegedly due to overheating problems. (Qualcomm denied those reports too.) Even devices that shipped with the chip had to under-clock them to deal with the problem, forcing Qualcomm to ship a revised edition. This was a major factor in Qualcomm’s disastrous year. A lack of confidence in new Snapdragon processors, and the rise of competitive lower-priced chips forced the company to make drastic cuts.

The Snapdragon 820, like its predecessor, is facing controversy even before it’s launched, and that’s not good news for Qualcomm. Even if the rumors aren’t true, it won’t do much to inspire confidence in the brand and could lead to a rise in orders from companies like MediaTek and Intel.
