Could the Palm brand be coming back in the form of an Android phone?

Site default logo image

Screen Shot 2014-12-31 at 12.51.10 AM

The Palm smartphone brand may not be as dead it seemed. While parent company HP has already taken the company apart and sold off its remnants, there’s some new evidence pointing to the idea that the name, logo, and other related trademarks may be preparing to make a comeback.

Specifically, HP sold Palm’s trademarks to a company called Wide Progress Global Limited. Other trademarks owned by that company include… absolutely nothing. It seems Wide Progress Global was created solely to handle the Palm trademarks until some other company could put them to use.

Larry Page named in lawsuit by worker who was injured while painting his yacht

larrypage_wide-c26591d4ae77c239b07642f82203b575c1288629-s6-c10

Google CEO Larry Page is being sued by a worker who sustained injuries while painting the executive’s yacht. When Page hired contractor HF Interior to remodel his boat, painter James Grupinski says he was forced to work 12-hour days without the proper tools or safety equipment.

The painter says he collapsed at one point after being subjected to toxic fumes from the paint he was given to use. He asked to be taken to the hospital, but his employer threatened to fire him and allegedly told him to “stop being a baby” and “drink some milk.”

How any of this ends up being Page’s fault is somewhat of a mystery, but it’s likely Grupinski is just hoping to make his payday a little bit bigger by roping the CEO into the mess. Grupinski is also suing several contractors, according to the report.

You can then view a before-and-after example of the changes, then choose whichever version you like best. An example is embedded above. These changes can also be applied to any older videos through the Google+ website. The company says that a speech enhancement option will be added in the future.

Emails found among the documents recently stolen from Sony by hackers have revealed what looks to be concept art for an unannounced smartphone. The “XPERIA Z Fourth Generation,” seen above, was pitched by Sony executives for product placements in the recently announced 24th James Bond flick “Spectre.”

The executives haggle over pricing for the placement of the phone, questioning whether they should pay the full $5 million for star Daniel Craig to use the phone, or settle for actor Ben Whishaw’s much cheaper “Q” to show it off.

Google has published a post on its Public Policy blog responding to recent revelations that the Motion Picture Association of America was working with a group of movie studios in order to find new ways to force the search giant to modify its results to omit sites that contained stolen copyrighted material:

We are deeply concerned about recent reports that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) led a secret, coordinated campaign to revive the failed SOPA legislation through other means, and helped manufacture legal arguments in connection with an investigation by Mississippi State Attorney General Jim Hood.

Now the market is about to get a little more crowded as an even newer competitor prepares to enter the fray. Google preparing to jump into online commerce with ‘buy now’ button

Site default logo image

Google-Shopping-Nov-2013

Google is preparing to take on commerce giant Amazon by incorporating a “buy now” button into its shopping search results, the Wall Street Journal reported today. The results currently rely on links to third-party retailers, but the Mountain View search company is apparently looking to integrate itself a little deeper into the checkout process.

Unlike Amazon, Google doesn’t plan to maintain its own warehouses, stock products, or handle any sales itself. Instead, it will create a system for consumers to buy products from third-parties using Google Shopping as an intermediary service.

Lollipop is now rolling out over the air to the Galaxy S4 GPE

GalaxyS4-launch-06

Google has started rolling out the (almost) latest version of Android to the Google Play Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The over-the-air update to version 5.0 (not the more recent 5.0.1) was noticed by Android Police today.

Previously the S4 had been said to be on the schedule for Lollipop in “early 2015,” but apparently things moved a little faster than expected. Other GPE devices like the Moto G have also recently started seeing updates to the new operating system.

Earlier today Google also made the Android 5.0.1 factory image available for the LTE-equipped Nexus 9 tablet.

The plan, which was codenamed “Project Goliath,” would involve each of the major movie studios contributing money toward a $500,000 fund to support legal attacks against the Mountain View company for its (unwitting) role in helping pirates find stolen media.

YouTube has just released a new GIF-making tool in testing on PBS’s Idea Channel. The tool is available under the share menu and allows users to pick a five-second clip from the video, add two lines of text, and export the file to their computer.

The frame rate of the output isn’t quite buttery smooth, and the inability to pick a longer section of video can be a little annoying, but the tool seems very usable in its first version. Google hasn’t said when this feature will roll out to the rest of YouTube.
