Huawei P9, P9 Lite and P9 Max specs possibly revealed in sketchy online listing

Huawei’s next flagship smartphone will be the P9, and if rumors and leaks are anything to go by, we’re expecting a phone which looks very similar to the P8 released last year. With that said, there will undoubtedly be some differences shown off when the device gets unveiled to the media at a London event on April 6th. Now, the family of P9-series phones has shown up on Oppomart, an online store which specializes in importing Chinese smartphones to the US.

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge pre-orders are ‘stronger than expected’, Samsung exec says

Koh Dong-jin, president of Samsung’s handsets business, mentioned during a press briefing that the company saw strong pre-order numbers for the Galaxy S7 phones, saying that they were ‘stronger than expected’…

Google said to desire a more Apple-like experience with Nexus line, but how far can it go?

Site default logo image

A report today is saying that Google wants to become more like Apple in its Nexus lineup of phones and tablets – that is to say it wants more control over the marketing and building of its products. But can Google build up its hardware engineering at the same time without alienating its hardware/carrier partners and even Apple? …

Xiaomi retained top spot in China in 2015, but Huawei likely to hit back this year, says Canalys

While Canalys reported last year that Huawei overtook Xiaomi to become the biggest-selling smartphone manufacturer in China during Q3, it now says strong Q4 sales enabled Xiaomi to retake the top slot for the year. It says Xiaomi ended the year with a 15.2% market share against 14.7% for Huawei, with Apple following at 12.5%.

The WSJ reports that this view is echoed by rival market intelligence company Strategy Analytics. However, with more Chinese consumers looking to upgrade to mid-range handsets this year, Canalys analyst Nicole Peng believes the positions could be reversed during the course of this year …

Huawei predicted to be one of 2016’s smartphone market growth leaders

In a report that’s no surprise to anyone who’s followed the smartphone market this past year, DigiTimes‘ industry sources are expecting Huawei to be this year’s biggest growers. The Chinese smartphone maker is predicted to sell 120 million smartphones in 2016, 20% more than it did during 2015.

We think if it follows on from its success this year, there’s no reason why it can’t achieve those figures…

Report: Huawei’s plans for 2016 include four P9 smartphone variants, one with unique dual-camera

Huawei went from being relatively unknown to being one of the biggest smartphone makers in the world over the course of 2015. This was thanks to a strong portfolio of devices, ranging from low to high end in prices and performance.

While the Honor sub-brand sold like hotcakes in Europe, it was the P8 which really opened our eyes to how well this company could make smartphones. Writing for VentureBeat, well-known leaker Evan Blass claims the follow-up could come in four variants

Huawei’s Honor 5X is a peek at the future of budget phones, hopefully with better software

I’ve been using my Honor 5X on and off for about a week now, and my thoughts on the phone pretty much align with what everyone else is saying: The phone’s significance is not that it’s an amazingly great phone, but that it’s yet another inch toward driving down the price of good phones in general.

In the future, a “budget” phone (you know, the $150 Moto Gs of the world) will offer everything that today’s flagships tout. They will be made of metal, they will have fingerprint sensors, they will have more than capable processors, they will have great cameras, and they will have good software.

To me, the Honor 5X is our first peek at such a future. But it’s definitely not without its flaws…

Xiaomi’s $46B valuation questioned as company misses sales target, faces greater competition

Investors are “beginning to question” Xiaomi’s $46B valuation after the company reportedly failed to hit its sales target of 80M smartphones in 2015, reports the WSJ. That target was itself reduced from 100M last summer, and the company has also not yet delivered on its promise of substantial revenue from Internet services.

Xiaomi has faced tougher competition from more established brands like Huawei.

Huawei’s engineering strength and brand image, built up over decades, make it difficult for Xiaomi to compete in China, analysts say.

“The competition in China’s smartphone market has intensified tremendously this year,” said a Xiaomi spokeswoman, who declined to comment on the company’s valuation or say whether it met its 2015 sales target.

Huawei comfortably overtook Xiaomi to become the Chinese market leader in October of last year …
