Comment: With a single update, Huawei just re-established Honor 5X as a great budget option

The Huawei-made Honor 5X has topped our picks for a budget smartphone for quite some time, however there have always been some caveats. The heavy software skin atop Android on this device has never been great, but just last week Huawei rolled out a major update to the Honor 5X with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and EMUI 4.0 in tow. While there isn’t a lot on the surface that has changed, this one update has made the Honor 5X a much better budget smartphone.

Huawei’s Honor 5C budget phone is coming to Europe this week for just £149

Site default logo image

At CES earlier this year, Huawei’s budget brand Honor launched its budget Honor 5X handset. Us and many others agree that the 5X is a great phone for the price, but suffers greatly in the software department. Now, Honor has announced a similarly-affordable phone dubbed the Honor 5C in Europe, and it starts at £149 (or about $220)…

Opinion: CyanogenMod improves the Honor 5X enough to make it my daily driver [Video]

After Chinese company Huawei introduced the phone for the US in January of this year, I gave the Honor 5X a full review. But maybe you can’t even call it that. More than a review, it was mostly just some thoughts on the phone that I had pent up after an exhausting week at CES. Basically, the gist was this (although I recommend you read the whole thing): You get a lot for your money ($200) on the hardware side of things with the Honor 5X, but the software leaves a lot (and, really, I mean a lot) to be desired. After that, the phone sat in my drawer and I hadn’t touched it since.

Until yesterday…

Huawei’s Honor 5X is a peek at the future of budget phones, hopefully with better software

I’ve been using my Honor 5X on and off for about a week now, and my thoughts on the phone pretty much align with what everyone else is saying: The phone’s significance is not that it’s an amazingly great phone, but that it’s yet another inch toward driving down the price of good phones in general.

In the future, a “budget” phone (you know, the $150 Moto Gs of the world) will offer everything that today’s flagships tout. They will be made of metal, they will have fingerprint sensors, they will have more than capable processors, they will have great cameras, and they will have good software.

To me, the Honor 5X is our first peek at such a future. But it’s definitely not without its flaws…

Hands-on with the new Huawei stuff: Mate 8, Honor 5X, MediaPad M2, Huawei Watch [Video]

Huawei announced a lot of stuff yesterday. Press day at CES 2016 started with a huge press conference from Huawei, featuring the Mate 8, MediaPad M2, the Huawei Watch, and a gold Nexus 6P, and the day ended with Huawei’s Honor brand announcing the Honor 5X and the Honor Band Z1. It’s a lot to take in, and we’re only just now starting to dig in so that we can bring you full reviews for these products over the coming weeks. We did get some hands-on time with some of these devices yesterday and today, though, and you can find that video below…

Honor 5X now available to pre-order from Newegg and Amazon for $199

Yesterday, at CES 2016,  Huawei clearly signaled its intent to build its presence in the US. It’ll do so through its own main brand and Honor, it’s more affordable sub-brand. With the Huawei Mate 8 and Honor 5X joining the Nexus 6P, the company now has a strong portfolio of devices available with premium features and build, at different price points…

Report: Huawei to sell Mate 8 & Honor 5X smartphones in the U.S. beginning next year

honor-5x

Despite not selling its flagship smartphone in the United States, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei has a hold on the third-place position in the world, behind Samsung and Apple. According to a report today from The Wall Street Journal, however, Huawei hopes to expand the availability of its flagship smartphone to the United States very soon…

Huawei’s Honor brand to enter the US at CES 2016, likely with the Honor 5X

We told you a few days ago that Honor, a brand of primarily low-end smartphones owned by Huawei, sent out invites for an event early next year at CES. The wording in that invite was very vague, mentioning only new “creative and smart technology,” but now we have more of an idea what the company has planned. As we previously speculated, it appears Honor is planning to officially enter the United States market…
