Sony invites press to Oct. 9 event in NYC for possible US Xperia Z3 announcements

Sony has just sent out invites to press for an event coming up in NYC that could possibly see the company carry out the US launch of its latest Xperia Z3 lineup. The company already took the wraps off the new devices at IFA early this month, but it’s possible we’ll get a US-based event to officially unveil the devices here and announce available stateside.

We went hands-on with the new flagship Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone earlier this month on the IFA show floor in Berlin. The new device features a 5.2-inch 1080p display, 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 3,100mAh battery.

The Xperia Z3 unveiling arrived alongside announcements for the Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia E3 and Xperia Z3 tablet also announced earlier this month at IFA.

Google Ventures’ Uber will be installed on AT&T Android devices soon, use Google self driving cars later

A couple pieces of news from car service app Uber today, including the announcement that it’s partnering with AT&T to preinstall the app on Android phones sold by the carrier:

AT&T and Uber have joined forces—and networks—to deliver seamless Uber access to AT&T customers. Starting this summer, the Uber app will begin to be embedded in new AT&T Android phones.  AT&T will also be one of Uber’s key providers of new wireless service to drivers on the Uber platform in the United States, supporting Uber’s rapid growth across the country, which currently includes more than 60 U.S. Uber cities.

Uber is also said to be one of the first partners in line to operate Google’s new built from scratch self-driving cars unveiled last night.

During an interview at the Code Conference last night, Google’s Sergey Brin said that Google would operate its new self-driving cars itself initially but eventually partner with lots of companies and “possibly Uber”. TechCrunch followed up today claiming its sources say “Uber will eventually be a part of Google’s pilot self-driving car program” and allow users to request the cars once “there are enough prototypes on the road and the cars are deemed road-safe.

A clip from Brin’s interview last night where he mentioned Uber is below:

Samsung debuts two new mobile processors at Mobile World Congress

Samsung revealed its two latest mobile chips today during the World Mobile Congress: the Exynos 5422 and 5260. The 5422 is an octa-core processor featuring four ARM Cortex A15 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz and four smaller Cortex A7 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz. The 5260 is a hexa-core chip that sports two 1.7 GHz Cortex A15 cores paired with four 1.3 GHz A7 cores.

Both chips are able to intelligently pass specific tasks to whichever set of cores will provide better performance. This optimization, Sasmsung says, can help extend battery life up to 10%.

Gameloft releases first trailer for upcoming Modern Combat 5 title [Video]

With each instalment of the popular FPS Modern Combat series on iOS and Android, Gameloft seems to be getting a little closer to matching the quality of gameplay we expect from the top of the line console games in the genre such as Call of Duty.  While it’s no secret the Modern Combat series has borrowed a lot from COD (as have many other FPS games), the latest trailer for the upcoming Modern Combat 5 title looks to be the closet thing to an immersive, action-packed COD-like shooter that we’ll have on mobile devices. Note: On top of the gameplay, the logo towards the end of the video (including the animations) is little too close to the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series for my liking. Gameloft has been accused several times of knocking off games from big developers in the console world, most notably with its Gangstar (aka GTA clone) and NOVA (aka HALO clone) series.

We don’t learn a whole lot from the trailer itself, but it does appear much of the action will be taking place in Venice, Italy this time around. Despite the shameless similarities to other big franchises, those excited for the upcoming Modern Combat 5 will seemingly have to wait until E3 to hear more about when and for how much it will be coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Microsoft announces ‘SmartGlass’ wireless streaming app for Xbox/Android

Microsoft just wrapped up its presentation at this year’s E3 event. While we did not hear anything about iOS support for its new cross-platform Xbox Music service, the company did confirm Xbox SmartGlass would come to both Android and Apple devices. SmartGlass incorporates at least some of Apple’s AirPlay-like features that enable users to send video from their mobile devices to Xbox Live and Windows 8. It would also allow phones and tablets to be used as a second screen for providing content related to video or games on Xbox.

Microsoft demoed the feature with Madden on Xbox. It allowed players to use their tablet’s touchscreen to draw plays. Unfortunately, Microsoft only mentioned support for Windows 8 mobile devices for the Xbox gaming features:

Microsoft announced ahead of the E3 conference a new software application called “SmartGlass,” which can be downloaded on Windows phones and Windows 8 tablets, as well as devices powered by rivals such as Apple Inc’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android operating systems… For TV, someone watching “Game of Thrones” on the “HBO GO” streaming service via Xbox could simultaneously browse websites about the show’s cast.
