Google investing $390 million to expand European data center in Belgium

Google isn’t slowing down investing in new data center operations around the world. Back in January we heard that it is expanding its Berkley County data center in South Carolina with an additional $600 million investment bringing the project up to $1.2 billion total. Today, Associated Press reports that Google is set to invest $390 million in a new expansion of its European data center in Belgium.

Internet search giant Google says it is investing 300 million euros ($390 million) to expand its continental European data center. Google Inc. said Wednesday it will upgrade the facility in Belgium to meet growing demand for its online services

Back in October of last year Google opened its data center doors to all with a new project dubbed “Where the internet lives” that gives anyone a unique behind the scenes look at its facilities responsible for handling 20 billion web pages indexed per day, 3 billion daily searches, and free mail to 425 million Gmail users.

If you don’t know by now, since early February Microsoft has been running its “Scroogled” smear campaign spending 7 figures on a series of print and online ads attacking various Google services. The ads originally focused on Gmail and how Google displays ads based on the content of user’s emails, but Microsoft’s latest Scroogled ad (above) takes on another Google app– Google Play.

The ad is currently featured on the front page of Microsoft’s Scroogled website and features a warning that Google passes off personal information about users to app makers without consent from users:

When you buy an Android app from the Google app store, they give the app maker your full name, email address and the neighborhood where you live. This occurs without clear warning every single time you buy an app. If you can’t trust Google’s app store, how can you trust them for anything?

Google confirms Google Fiber coming to Austin, Texas by mid-2014 (Video)

We already knew that Google was getting set to announce its Gigabit Google Fiber Internet service for Austin, Texas today after an initial successful launch in Kansas last November. Reports claimed invites started going out this month, but today Google has officially announced Google Fiber will be coming to Austin, Texas by mid-2014.

Google noted that pricing would be similar to Kansas, and it will also be offering customers in Austin the same free Internet connection at 5 mbps for 7 years with a one time installation fee:

Google Calendar now available in Latin American Spanish on Android & desktop

While hundreds of millions of Spanish speakers around the globe have had the option to use Gmail in Latin America Spanish since last year, a number of other popular Google services didn’t offer the Español language setting. Now, Google has announced on its Official Gmail Blog that it is expanding support for its Latin American Spanish language option to Google Calendar:

If you’re new to Calendar but already using Gmail in Latin American Spanish, just visit google.com/calendar and language settings will be ready to go. If you’ve used Calendar in the past, you’ll need to update your language settings by clicking on the gear icon in the mid-upper right of Calendar, then selecting Settings: Once in General Settings, Language you can select Español (Latinoamérica).

You’ll also be able to access the Español (Latinoamérica) setting for Calendar on Android devices through your device’s “Language Settings” within Settings.

Screenshots claim to show Gmail integration for Google’s rumored Babel service

Rumors of an upcoming messaging service from Google dubbed “Babel” have been steadily popping up in recent months. We first heard back in March that the service would unify Google’s chat services such as Google Talk, Chat for Drive, Google+ Hangouts, etc, and since got a look at two different sets of screenshots showing variations of what tipsters both alleged were an Android app for the rumored service.

After a small hint at Gmail integration for Babel this morning, we now get yet another set of photos, this time reportedly showing what the service will look like inside of Gmail. TechRadar posted the images above that apparently come from an anonymous Google employee currently testing Babel.

From the screenshots we see a slightly tweaked text layout, new emoticons and the expected Google+ integration, but not much else.

Virgin offers T-Mobile pre-paid customers $100 to switch with new ad campaign

Despite some carriers already showing interest in T-Mobile’s new no-contract strategy, it was only a matter of time until the competition started going after the carrier’s new Uncarrier unlimited plans with new promotions and marketing. Today, Virgin launched its “Retrain Your Brain” campaign offering T-Mobile customers $100 to switch their number to one of its no-contract, $35 unlimited plans:

It’s pretty simple:  just choose your Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk smartphone.  Transfer your existing T-Mobile number before May 31, activate your new phone and become a Virgin Mobile customer by May 31 and receive $100 credit.

Samsung’s midrange is now a 4.7-inch display with quad-core CPU: Galaxy Win

Samsung today announced the latest addition to its midrange lineup with the ‘Samsung Galaxy Win’, a new device that appears to step things up in the specs department compared to what we are used from Samsung’s middle range line. A cross between older Galaxy devices and a bit of the refined Galaxy S4 design, the Galaxy Win actually sports some rather impressive specs for a device that we assume will land somewhere in between the S4 and Samsung’s cheaper, low-end Galaxy devices when it eventually gets priced.

Inside the Android 4.1-powered Galaxy Win you’ll find a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, a 4.7-inch display, a 5-megapixel main shooter, 8GB of onboard storage and a large 2,000mAh battery.

In addition to its Continuous Shot, Best Photo, and color effects features baked into the camera, Samsung will also include an “Easy Mode” homes screen, smart alerts, and motion UX:

Google cites $30B in patent privateering losses in campaign against patent trolls

Google today announced in a blog post on its Public Policy Blog that it has asked the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice to investigate and take a stronger stance against patent privateering and patent assertion entities, aka patent trolls. Google linked to a document submittedGoogle-building to the government agencies mentioned above and noted that BlackBerry, Earthlink and RedHat are among other companies backing the request.

Within its post, Google’s Senior Competition Counsel Matthew Bye cited losses of nearly $30 billion a year in the U.S. due to patent trolls and urged companies to help Google create “cooperative licensing agreements that can help curb privateering.”

Trolls use the patents they receive to sue with impunity—since they don’t make anything, they can’t be countersued. The transferring company hides behind the troll to shield itself from litigation, and sometimes even arranges to get a cut of the money extracted by troll lawsuits and licenses.

Google described patent privateering as companies selling “patents to trolls with the goal of waging asymmetric warfare against its competitors.” While it didn’t name any companies specifically in its blog post or document submitted to the FTC, it did link to an article on Bloomberg that mentions Microsoft, Nokia, and Alcatel-Lucent as companies linked to patent privateering.

In the document submitted to the FTC, Google outlined its stance on patent trolls and recommended the FTC initiate an investigation into patent assertion entities and or expand its broader inquiry to include a number of important areas specifically related to patent privateering:

HTC officially unveils the Facebook Home-powered ‘HTC First’ smartphone, available April 12 for $99

As expected, after showing off the new Facebook Home platform for Android phones, Mark Zuckerberg handed the stage over to HTC executives to unveil the first device that will officially run the platform— the HTC First. The device will come in four colors and will be available on AT&T’s 4G LTE network when it launches with Facebook Home preinstalled late this month.

AT&T will start taking pre-orders for the device starting today, and the HTC First will be available on April 12 for $99 exclusively through AT&T. Zuckerberg also hinted the device would be available through other partners in the future including EE and Orange.

On top of the HTC first, Facebook told us Home will be supported on the HTC One and Galaxy S4 in addition to the “HTC One X, HTC One X+, Samsung GALAXY S III and Samsung GALAXY Note II.”

Samsung confirms 1,400 ‘Samsung Experience Shops’ coming to Best Buy locations by summer

When we heard late last month that Samsung planned to open Apple-style ‘store-in-store’ locations within Best Buy retail stores it was still only rumor. Today Samsung and Best Buy have made things official for its plans to roll out 1,400 “Samsung Experience Shops” in Best Buy retail stores across the United States. Best Buy plans to have the store within a store Samsung shops up and running by the summer with 900 scheduled to open by May:

Select Best Buy stores will have Samsung Smart Service™, which includes dedicated Samsung Experience Consultants™ and Best Buy blue shirt sales associates to assist customers with purchasing and activating mobile products on the carrier of their choice, understanding their device and supporting them throughout the lifecycle of their product. The specially trained Samsung Experience Consultants will assist with product demonstrations, basic product services, Samsung account set up, warranty registration and post purchase support.

The shops vary in size, with the largest being approximately 460 square feet. Within the larger shops, the Samsung Connected Solutions™ area creates a place for customers to see how easily Samsung devices connect and share content across multiple screens.

It’s not exactly a first for Samsung, having experimented with a number of similar store-within-store locations at other retailers around the globe, but it could very well act as a test ahead of bigger retail expansion plans in the U.S. It’s also something that Google has experimented with in Best Buy and PCWorld in the United Kingdom, which we’re hearing has lead to even much bigger retail plans for the company.

Chrome for Android updated with password & autofill sync, performance enhancements

Following releasing the features to Beta channel users, Google announced today that it has started rolling out an update (26.0.1410.58) to all Chrome for Android users. It includes the ability to access saved password and autofill entries.

Users logged into both Chrome on the desktop and Android will now be able to get access to saved autofill entries and passwords when using the Android app:

To try it out, make sure you’re signed in to Chrome on both your desktop and mobile device, and let sync take care of the rest.

    • Fixed issue where blank page would be loaded rather than URL
    • Performance and stability improvements

The updated Chrome app should be available through Google Play soon, but Google noted it could take a couple of days for the feature to roll out to everybody.

Twitter releases redesigned Android app with new features

android_new designOn top of rolling out support for new Twitter cards for developers that will allow users to launch and install apps directly from within tweets, Twitter today released an overhauled Android app that finally follows the Android 4.0+ Holo design theme:

We just released a new version of Twitter for Android. Its new design reflects a native Android experience: wider and taller timelines that fill the screen, a flat navigation bar, tap and hold for quick actions, and more. You can now quickly navigate between tabs by swiping across your screen. And as you type your Tweet or search, you’ll see username and hashtag suggestions, making it easier to connect with friends and join conversations.

Other improvements in the updated app include @username and #hashtag auto suggestions when typing in search for composing a new tweet, as well as the ability to install and launch apps from developers that support a new mobile app deep-linking feature Twitter outlined on its developers blog.

The updated Twitter for Android app is available on Google Play now.

Google releases free Quickoffice Android & iPhone apps for Google Apps for Business customers

Google Apps for Business can already edit Microsoft Office files using Quickoffice on an iPad, and starting today they can do the same on iPhone and Androiddevices. From Word to Excel to Powerpoint, you can make quick edits at the airport or from the back of a taxi and save and share everything in Google Drive… iPad and iPhone users can open and edit Office files directly from the Drive app. Just open Drive and select the file, make edits using Quickoffice and save it back to Drive.

Google noted the updated apps also bring new features including support for multiple Google Drive accounts, improved chart rendering, ZIP folders from multiple files, and the ability to sort Drive files by “Shared with me, Starred, and Recent”:

Sprint launching HTC One for $199 on April 19, pre-orders start April 5

Not long after AT&T made things official for an April 19 launch and April 4 pre-order date, Sprint too announced today it would launch the HTC One this month. While it won’t have the 64GB model exclusive to AT&T at launch, it will launch the $199 32GB model on its typical two-year contract starting April 19.

Sprint customers will be able to begin pre-ordering the HTC One in Silver or Black one day after AT&T customers on April 5 at www.sprint.com/htcone. The device will hit the usual Sprint retail outlets a couple weeks after on April 19.

AT&T announces HTC One preorders begin April 4: $199 for 32GB, $299 for 64GB

AT&T officially announced pricing and availability of the HTC One today following some inaccurate rumors floating around yesterday. AT&T confirmed that the 4.7-inch aluminum unibody device would arrive for customers beginning April 19 starting at  $199.99 for the 32GB variant on the usual two-year contract. It also noted that it would be the only U.S. carrier at launch to offer the 64GB model, which will go for $299 on contract.

Preorders for the HTC One on AT&T will start April 4 at 1 p.m. CT, and the carrier will be throwing in a $90 HTC Media Link HD wireless HDMI adaptor for free and the AT&T DriveMode app:

Samsung planning to launch 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch ‘Galaxy Mega’ phablets?

Samsung was eyeing a display between 5.9-inches and 6.3-inches for its much rumored upcoming Galaxy Note III last we heard. SamMobile earlier this month said that device would appear at IFA in Berlin this August, but a new report from the Samsung-focused blog today claimed Samsung will introduce a new lineup of devices in the 5.8- to 6.3-inch display size.

While noting “Samsung changed the name of their expected Galaxy Fonblets,” SamMobile said Samsung would soon introduce a new lineup of smartphone and tablet hybrids dubbed “Galaxy Mega” in 5.8-inch (GT-I9152) and 6.3-inch (GT-I9200) variants.

The devices will reportedly launch between the end of May and be available by mid-June:

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 will come in the colour white and will be available around week 22. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 will come in the colours black and white these galaxy devices need to be available around week 25.

It’s unclear what exactly this means for Samsung’s Galaxy Note III. It would be surprising for Samsung to introduce both the Note III and new Galaxy Mega tablet with a 6.3-inch display. Perhaps the Note III becomes the 5.8-inch device, and the Mega branding is reserved for the larger 6.3-inch variant? It’s also possible Samsung keeps the Galaxy Note III at the same 5.5-inch size of the Note II and introduces the Mega line to bridge the gap and cover all bases between its Note lineup and 7-inch to 10-inch tablet lines. We’ll keep you posted when we learn more.

Nuance launches ‘Voice Ads’ platform to bring voice recognition tech to mobile advertising

If Nuance gets its way with the just announced ‘Voice Ads’ mobile advertising platform, soon every mobile ad could include Siri-like functionality that lets you communicate with and ask questions about the product being advertised.

Nuance, the company behind the voice recognition module now used in Apple’s Siri, today announced a new project to bring its voice recognition technology to the mobile advertising world. The basic concept of the new platform, which Nuance made available through an SDK for advertising companies, is to bring a two-way, interactive conversation to mobile ads. As highlighted by Nuance in the video above, ads that implement the Voice Ads platform will allow users to engage in a Siri-like conversation with an advertisement:

In the demo above, Nuance shows an advertisement for a fictional deodorant brand that uses a magic 8-ball theme to answer any question that users might have. The ad of course ends in a pitch for the product in question, as you might expect. Other ads could allow users to ask specific questions about a product’s release date or specs…

Gmail’s new compose window rolling out as default for all users starting today

We told you in October that Google began to test a redesigned compose and reply window in Gmail for a number of users. Google was previously allowing users to opt in and out of using the new feature that lets users compose and reply to multiple messages at once while still navigating the inbox. The company announced today that it is beginning to roll out the feature as the default for all users:

In addition to telling us what you love about the new compose experience (like how much easier it is to multitask!) you’ve also been sending us helpful suggestions for what features you’d like to see added. As a result of your input, we’re now ready to introduce the new compose experience as the default for everyone. We’re looking forward to hearing what you think!

The new compose experience will be available as default to all users in the next few days. Google didn’t’ specify whether users will still be able to switch back to the old compose style.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 preorders begin April 16 for $249 on contract

While there is still no word when the actual handset will be available, AT&T announced in a blog post on its website today that customers will be able to pre-order the device starting April 16.

Google reportedly set to assemble Google Glass in California, make a ‘few thousand’ in coming weeks

Greg_Glass_framesGoogle Glass is set to manufacture its much hyped Google Glass wearable platform right at home in the United States, according to a new report from The Financial Times. Citing a source close to the project, FT said Google has partnered with Foxconn to assemble the headsets on home soil in Santa Clara, Calif. Google will apparently source most components from Asia with final assembly completed in the U.S.:

Google is working with Hon Hai Precision Industry, the Taiwanese contract manufacturer better known as Foxconn, to assemble the sci-fi headset at a facility in Santa Clara, California, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.

The report claimed a “few thousand” Google Glass units will be produced by the California factory “in the coming weeks.” Google’s reasoning for bringing the manufacturing stateside? According to FT, it will allow Google to have better control over the complex and small-scale operation while becoming a “high-profile example” of bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.

The report also said it will allow Google’s engineers to “be closely involved with the production process and provide more opportunities for last-minute fixes and for personal customization.”

The small scale, high cost and complexity of the project’s initial run makes it practical to base manufacturing operations near the search company’s Silicon Valley headquarters, according to people briefed on the plans.

The company’s last major attempt to bring the assembly of one of its products to the U.S. was with the Nexus Q streaming orb, a product it quietly killed off just weeks after being unveiled.

Google announced yesterday it will begin sending out invites to winners of its #ifihadglass contest in the coming weeks, while press and developers who signed up for the program at Google I/O last year are also still waiting to drop $1,500 on Glass.

Google Translate for Android adds offline translations in 50 languages, vertical text translations for Chinese, Japanese & Korean

Google announced an update today to Google Translate for Android that brings an extremely useful feature for those who are traveling or in need of translations when without an Internet connection. Starting today, the updated Android app will now allow users running devices on Android 2.3 and up to access the service using downloadable offline language packages.

Google noted that there are currently around 50 languages available for offline use and detailed how to download the necessary packages through the app:

You can select [Offline Languages] in the app menu to see all the offline language packages available for download. To enable offline translation between any two languages, you just need to select them in the offline languages menu. Once the packages are downloaded, you’re good to go.

While the languages packages provide everything you need to get quick translations when offline, Google warned that the offline modes are “less comprehensive than their online equivalents” without explaining in detail.

Users of the updated app will also now be able to translate vertical text for Japanese, Chinese, and Korean—using their device’s camera.

The updated Google Translate app for Android is available now through Google Play.

Google sending out invites to Glass Explorer program over next few days

Google announced today in a post on Google+ that the results from its #ifihadglass contest are in and the winners will be contacted with invitations to the Google Glass Explorer program over the next few days.

We could never have imagined such an enthusiastic response! There were so many creative, diverse, and (sometimes) crazy applications. We’ve certainly learned a lot through this whole process and it’s inspiring to hear how much passion there is for Glass.

Google didn’t mention availability for those who signed up for the $1,500 Explorer Edition at last year’s Google I/O, but we’ll likely hear more on availability for others with invitations going out to contest winners in the near future.

Google noted in today’s post that it currently isn’t offering the Explorer Program to businesses, but it will work “on connecting with businesses in other ways.” Those who received an invitation to the Explorer program will be able to pick up their Glass at one of several events planned for later this year in New York, San Fran, and L.A. Invitations will be announced through @projectglass on Twitter and +Project Glass on Google+.

Google+ mobile apps updated with Snapseed editing features, new profile design, location sharing, and much more

Google announced a major update today for its Google+ mobile apps today that, among a number of other features, brings some of Snapseed’s basic photo-editing enhancements to the iPhone app:

  • Do basic edits like rotate and crop, as well as select filters like Drama and Retrolux
  • Adjust saturation, contrast, brightness and lots more by sliding your fingers up-and-down, then left-and-right
  • Single tap at any time to compare your creation with the original

Google isn’t entirely merging Snapseed into the Google+ apps, as it still recommends downloading its standalone Snapseed app for more advanced editing features. On the Android side, Google listed the following new enhancements, such as:

  • Posts include more text up front—from the original message, and from comments
  • Tapping video, photo or link attachments takes you directly to a watch page, lightbox or website

To give the feature a try, just visit your Google+ settings via desktop or Android and turn on “Location Sharing.” You can also visit +Chris Hadfield’s profile—the Canadian Space Agency astronaut is sharing his current location (the International Space Station!) with all of us here on Earth.

Both the updated iPhone and Android versions will include more ways of managing communities such as “the ability to adjust the volume of community posts in your Home stream.”

Google also listed a number of other new features and enhancements for iPhone users, including: a new profile design, a redesigned notifications tray, new set-up process of new users. Additional updates added:

– New photo editing features: add filters, rotate and crop
– New profile design
– New notifications tray
– New set-up flow for new users
– Control the volume of posts that you see in your stream from individual circles/communities
– Filter search results by best or most recent
– Tell your friends about a community (by sharing it or sending an invitation)
– Reshare posts to communities
– Display counts for unread messages in your communities

On top of bringing Snapseed-editing features to the iPhone app today, Google announced it is releasing the Nik Collection by Google. It’s a $149 package of the Snapseed creator’s Photoshop, Lightroom, and Aperture plug-ins.

Version 4.3.0 of Google+ for iPhone and iPad is on the App Store now, while the updated Android app should be available on Google Play shortly.
