Breaking news for Android. Get the latest on apps, carriers, devices, and more!

Android is Google’s mobile operating system, launched in September 2008, although its history technically began with the release of the Android alpha in November 2007. To this day, Android powers the majority of the world’s smartphones and comes in several different flavors across many phone makers.

What is Android?

Android Inc.

Android, before it was Android, was a company called Android Inc. That company was founded in Palo Alto, California, in 2003 by a crew of four: Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears, and Chris White. The company and its project was acquired by Google in 2005 for a sum of more than $50 million, although the exact number is unknown. The company’s founders joined Google as part of the deal.

In its infancy, Android was an operating system built not for touch screen smartphones like the iPhone, but rather BlackBerry-like devices with physical keyboards. It’s well documented that after Apple shocked the world with the iPhone, ahead of its nearest competition by at least a couple years, Google and Android Inc. had to go back to the drawing board to build something competitive.

Adoption by third-party makers

It didn’t take long after the launch of the iPhone for various manufacturers to enter the market with their alternatives — and Google’s Android immediately became the obvious platform of choice for just about everyone except Microsoft. HTC was the first manufacturer on board, and introduced the T-Mobile G1 running Android in September 2008. Soon after, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and carriers like Sprint and T-Mobile jumped on board to form the Open Handset Alliance.

Android makers across the world

Iconic Android handsets

There have been thousands of Android phones released since Android’s inception, but some have been more important to the platform’s history than others. There was the original T-Mobile G1, as mentioned, but there was also the HTC One Google Play Edition, Moto G, Samsung Galaxy S4, and others. Some of the most iconic Android handsets include:

  • HTC G1
  • HTC Nexus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S, S2, S3, S4, and their successors
  • HTC Incredible S
  • Samsung Nexus S
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  • Samsung Galaxy Note
  • Nokia 8
  • BlackBerry KeyOne
  • Google Pixel and its successors

In more modern times, there are several Android smartphones makers that popped up across various niches and in several international markets. Huawei is a dominant Android maker in China and many European markets, while Samsung is by far the most popular maker in the United States by far — effectively creating a duopoly with Apple. Today, there are dozens of major device makers contributing to the Android ecosystem.

History of major Android versions

Android has seen countless software revisions over the course of its life, but in modern times the OS usually sees a major release on an annual cadence. In the earlier days, Google famously gave its major software releases dessert-themed codenames, but retired that practice in 2019 with the release of Android 10.

List of major Android OS platforms

While Android proper is certainly the most widespread of Google’s Android operating systems, the company has also launched many offshoots of the main OS over the years. There’s Android Auto, Android Wear (now Wear OS), Android TV (now rebranded to Google TV), as well as versions of Android built for tablets and Android Things (now defunct).

Verizon reveals two never before seen Pixel Live Cases, ‘Earth’ and ‘Trends’

Google’s “Live Cases” debuted on the Nexus 5X and 6P, since expanding to the Pixel and Pixel XL. To date, we’ve seen three main options for these customizable cases ─ photos, places, and artwork. However, it seems Verizon has jumped the gun a bit, showing us two new Live Cases that have yet to be announced.

Nougat debuts at a measly 0.3% in November’s Android distribution numbers

For some reason, Google didn’t post Android distribution numbers last month. Now updated for November, however, Nougat finally enters the fray. Marshmallow, meanwhile, sees a decent jump to nearly a quarter of all devices — despite there being a huge share of KitKat and Lollipop devices still in the wild…

This is the first Android One smartphone with Nougat, the General Mobile GM 5

Google’s Android One program has been pretty quiet over the past couple months. The last device released, the Sharp 507SH, landed in Japan but with Android Marshmallow out of the box. Since then Nougat has been released and now General Mobile has announced the GM 5, the first Android One device to launch with the latest version of Google’s mobile OS…

Android Nougat has the ability to take partial screenshots, but it’s currently hidden

Google Pixel Screenshot

In most cases, if you want to capture and share something specific on your phone’s screen, you have to take a screenshot and then crop down the image before sharing it with others. This might not be the case for too much longer, though, because code found in the Android Nougat 7.1 Android Open Source Project that shows the inclusion of a “partial screenshot” feature could soon make it to our devices.

Samsung appears to be preparing an Android Nougat beta program for the Galaxy S7 Edge

It’s been about 3 months since Android Nougat first went official, and OEMs have already taken the new OS to new smartphones such as the LG V20 and Huawei Mate 9. However, we haven’t seen any big OTA updates from OEMs. Luckily, it seems like Samsung is preparing a beta update for Galaxy S7 Edge users in the UK.

Samsung planning to release a Galaxy Note 7 update that limits its battery to 60%

Site default logo image

Samsung has announced today to provide an update on the Note 7 debacle, saying that almost 85% of all recalled Galaxy Note 7 devices have now been replaced through its exchange program. You would think the Korean company would rather just pretend like nothing happened at this point, but I guess these numbers aren’t that bad — 85% is a good majority.

But it looks like that number is about to inch its way even higher, as Samsung now says that it plans to push out a software update that effectively cripples remaining Note 7 devices that the brave loyalists out there refuse to give up…

You could win a free HTC device in one of the company’s forthcoming weekly giveaways

HTC may have had a rough couple of years, but that doesn’t mean that its products have all been bad. Its latest HTC 10, in fact, is a pretty solid smartphone — and they do deserve some credit for giving Google‘s own Pixel a much-appreciated sturdiness after all.

If you hate the Taiwanese company for some reason, I honestly don’t know why you are here. But if you fancy some of its gear, you may be in luck…

Comment: Google’s Android is starting to shine through as OEMs continue lightening their skins

Android has evolved a lot over the years, but in the past, it had a serious problem with its looks. While stock Android has looked pretty good for the past several years, OEM skins had a tendency to ruin that, at least to a certain extent. And if not ruin, they definitely brought lots of design inconsistencies…

The Google Search bar widget may be getting a new look to match the Pixel

Rather than using a wide widget that goes across the entire display, the Google “pill” was introduced with the Pixel phones. The round design on the new widget looks interesting and unique, but the standard Google Search widget didn’t match up. Now, Google appears to be testing a new look for that widget which adopts a similar look (via Android Police)…
